While almost all external hard drives are compatible with PCs nowadays, there may be a few that aren\u2019t if you don\u2019t have the correct ports on your computer, or if your OS is out-of-date. This should go without saying, but before we move on, make sure that everything is powered on and connected properly. Loose power supplies or USB connections are a common reason why an external hard drive doesn\u2019t work properly. Once you\u2019ve confirmed everything is connected correctly, it\u2019s time to install or update the drivers.

USB hubs solve the issue of not having enough ports, as it connects multiple devices to one. While convenient, they can prevent your hard drive from properly communicating with your computer, which is especially true for passive hubs.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nLarger external hard drives typically have dedicated power supplies, but smaller, travel-sized hard drives are commonly bus-powered. That means it will receive power directly from the computer when you turn it on. If you connect your external hard drive and it draws more power than your USB hub can provide, you may experience connectivity dropouts or no connectivity whatsoever.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nThis is why you should always connect your external hard drive directly to your computer and use USB hubs for other external peripherals such as iLoks<\/a>, eLicensers<\/a>, and USB flash drives<\/a>. Having up-to-date drivers is very important for Windows to recognize your external hard drive. If the secondary drive comes with its own driver software, you can download and install them from the manufacturer’s website. If the hard drive doesn’t come with its own driver software, Windows will typically automatically install it (class-compliant)<\/em> and you will configure everything from the Device Manager<\/em> window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Download driver from the manufacturer<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n- Go to the manufacturer\u2019s driver download page and locate the latest driver download for your hard drive.<\/li>
- Navigate to your Downloads <\/em>folder, right-click the installer .exe <\/strong>file, then select Run as administrator<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Once the installation is complete, restart your computer.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve checked the manufacturer\u2019s website and it doesn\u2019t have its own driver software, you\u2019ll reinstall and update your external hard drive in Device Manager<\/em>. External hard drives will usually be listed within Disk drives <\/em>or Universal Serial Bus controllers<\/em> (will be listed as USB Mass Storage Device<\/em><\/strong>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n- Right-click the Windows<\/strong> icon on the toolbar, then click Device Manager<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Expand Disk drives<\/em>, and locate your hard drive. If your hard drive isn\u2019t listed there, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers<\/em>.<\/li>
- Right-click your hard drive, then select Update driver<\/strong>. <\/li>
- Click Search automatically for updated driver software<\/strong>, then follow the on-screen instructions.<\/li>
- To reinstall a driver, right-click your hard drive, then select Uninstall device<\/strong>. Once uninstalled, restart your computer.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

If your hard drive has a yellow caution sign in Device Manager, the first thing you\u2019ll want to do is connect it to a different USB port and use a different USB cable. If that doesn\u2019t work, there could be a driver conflict or that multiple drivers have been installed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n- Show hidden devices by navigating to View <\/strong>then selecting Show hidden devices<\/strong>. This will show every instance of the driver that has been installed.<\/li>
- Navigate to Disk drives<\/em>, and use the drop-down to expand the full list.
- If you don\u2019t see the hard drive within Disk drives<\/em>, check Universal Serial Bus controllers<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Right-click all instances of your hard drive (including the ones which are greyed out)<\/em> and select Uninstall<\/strong> Device<\/strong>. <\/strong>
- You will need to uninstall each instance one at a time. <\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Reboot your computer, then go back to Device Manager<\/strong> to confirm that the issue has been resolved. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
Unknown Device<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If your hard drive isn\u2019t listed, and you see Unknown Device<\/em>, this often means that Windows didn\u2019t install the driver, or it was installed incorrectly. Depending on the error code, the steps are different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To see what the error code is, right-click Unknown Device,<\/em> then select Properties<\/strong>. The error code will display in the General <\/em>tab. IMPORTANT: <\/strong>When formatting an external hard drive, you’ll need to make sure that it’s assigned a drive letter that is different from those currently in use and that it\u2019s formatted to the correct file system<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After you’ve successfully installed the drivers for your external hard drive, you’ll need to create a partition<\/a> and format<\/a> the hard drive using Disk Management<\/a>. If the hard drive isn’t formatted or doesn\u2019t have a partition, then your computer won’t recognize it as a storage device, and you won\u2019t be able to store anything on it. It’s a common mistake one can run into, but it’s a straightforward process.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n- Go to Disk Management,<\/strong> right-click the external hard drive you need to format and click Initialize Disk<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Select the partition layout:
- GPT<\/strong> for hard drives with a capacity larger than 2 TB.<\/li>
- MBR<\/strong> for hard drives with a capacity of less than 2 TB.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Right-click the space that says Unallocated<\/strong>, select New Simple Volume\u2026<\/strong>, and then follow the on-screen prompts.<\/li>
- Select the Format, Volume Label (drive name<\/em>), and partition size, and then click Next<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Select the drive letter using the dropdown box, and then click Finish<\/strong>.
- Be sure that the drive letter is different from hard drives currently in use.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
