In the world of computers, a partition is an allotted amount of space on a hard drive that is separate from the others. You can have multiple partitions on a single storage device, but your computer will recognize it as two different hard drives.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> There are a few reasons why creating multiple partitions is very useful. First and most importantly, if your OS data becomes corrupt, there\u2019s less of a chance for you to lose data. If you want to keep your files&nbsp;<em>(i.e., music, videos, photos)<\/em>&nbsp;separate from your OS and system data, and it helps keep things organized. Be sure to back your files up before continuing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a partition on Windows is done through the Disk Management window. To open Disk Management, click the <strong>Windows <\/strong>icon, type disk, then click <strong>Create and format hard disk partitions<\/strong>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The instructions are dependent on whether the hard drive is already formatted, so we\u2019ll cover both ways. If this is your first time formatting a hard drive, keep this tab open and check our instructions on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/how-to-format-an-external-hard-drive-on-windows-10\/\" target=\"_blank\">how to format a hard drive on Windows 10<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Create-a-new-partition\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Create a new partition<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Right-click in the <em>Unallocated <\/em>section <em>(indicated by the black bar)<\/em>, then select <strong>New Simple Volume<\/strong>.<\/li><li>When the <em>New Simple Volume <\/em>window appears, click <strong>Next<\/strong>, then enter the size of the partition you want to create in <strong>MB<\/strong>, then click <strong>Next <\/strong>again.<ul><li>Take note that 1 GB = 1024 MB.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Assign the drive letter, then on the next screen, use the dropdown box to assign the file system system format. Be sure to back your files up before continuing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Launch <em>Finder<\/em>, click <strong>Go<\/strong>, select <strong>Utilities<\/strong>, then double-click <strong>Disk Utility<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select the <em>Volume <\/em>you want to partition, then click the <strong>Partition <\/strong>button.<\/li><li>Click the <strong>+ <\/strong>icon, then rename the partition you want to create. <em>FAT <\/em>and <em>exFAT <\/em>partitions can only have <em>eleven <\/em>characters.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Select the file format, and enter the size you want the partition to be.<ul><li><em>FAT <\/em>or <em>exFAT<\/em>: Mac and Windows<\/li><li><em>Apple File System (APFS)<\/em>: Mac only<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Once updated, click <strong>Apply<\/strong>, select <strong>Partition<\/strong>, then click <strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Allow the Mac to create the partition.
