What are SysEx MIDI files?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
SysEx (System Exclusive) <\/em>is part of the MIDI universe and consists of a group of hex (hexadecimal) <\/em>codes. It will always start with F0 <\/strong>and end in F7<\/strong>. It\u2019s transmitted via MIDI (using either a MIDI or USB cable) and is specific to the device you\u2019re using. This means that a SysEx message from one manufacturer\u2019s device will be different than another and won\u2019t work.

SysEx messages are most commonly used for dumping (sending) <\/em>and loading patches of a synthesizer. However, depending on the device, it can also be used to send and load control parameters, firmware updates, and even factory resets. Using SysEx is often useful when transferring or backing up user data to your Mac<\/a> or P<\/a>C.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to write SysEx files<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Since SysEx files are hexadecimal<\/a>, they\u2019re not the easiest to create manually. Most SysEx files are either generated by your device or provided by the manufacturer. Some apps like MIDI OX actually do have features for manually creating custom SysEx files. Still, you don\u2019t typically need to do this unless your device is older or you need to perform advanced functions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SysEx MIDI files on Mac<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
SysEx Librarian<\/a> is an open-sourced macOS utility made my Snoize. It enables your Mac to send SysEx messages to your devices. While some DAW’s can read and write SysEx data, a dedicated utility like SysEx Librarian is a simple solution for the task. Download the app, connect your device, and then send\/receive the message(s). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Go to the SysEx Librarian<\/a> page and click the Download<\/strong> button.<\/li>
- Open your Downloads folder and double-click the SysExLibrarian <\/em>.zip<\/strong> folder to decompress it.<\/li>
- Drag the newly created SysEx Librarian app to your Applications<\/strong> folder.<\/li>
- Go to your Applications folder and double-click SysEx Librarian to launch it.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

Record SysEx MIDI data to your computer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
To record the SysEx data from your device, just enable the SysEx Librarian and transmit the file from your device. The data will be written as a file within the SysEx Librarian and saved as a SysEx (.syx)<\/em> or MIDI (.midi)<\/em> file. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Connect your device and select it or the MIDI port it\u2019s connected to.<\/li>
- Follow your device\u2019s instructions for enabling transmission of SysEx files.<\/li>
- Click the Record One<\/strong> button and then play the SysEx file from your device when you’re ready.<\/li>
- Click the File<\/strong> menu and select Save As SysEx (.syx)…<\/strong> to save it to your backup or project folder.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

Send SysEx MIDI data to your device<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
When you want to load the SysEx file back to your device, reconnect it and use the SysEx librarian to play the file back. Check the device\u2019s user manual and follow any additional instructions required for receiving SysEx. Once the SysEx file is played the settings will load to your device and respond accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Connect your device and select either it or the MIDI port it\u2019s connected to.<\/li>
- Follow your device\u2019s instructions for enabling receipt of SysEx files.<\/li>
- Drag your SysEx file into the SysEx Librarian window and click the Play<\/strong> button. Wait for the transmission to complete, then check that the device\u2019s settings are updated. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

SysEx MIDI files on PC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
There are plenty of MIDI utilities to monitor and transfer SysEx on a Windows PC. However, in this article, we will be using the free third-party MIDI utility called MIDI-OX<\/strong>. This software allows you to manage SysEx files and is a great troubleshooting tool<\/a>. You need to do a few things in the software first so that your MIDI device can send and receive SysEx files properly. Follow these steps to set up your MIDI device with MIDI-OX.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n- Go to the MIDI-OX homepage<\/a> and download the latest version of the software. <\/li>
- Go to your Downloads <\/em>folder, launch the installer, and follow the on-screen instructions.<\/li>
- Connect your MIDI controller to your computer and launch the software.<\/li>
- Navigate to Options<\/strong> and click MIDI Devices<\/strong>. Alternatively, you can click the blue <\/em>MIDI port icon on the toolbar.<\/li>
- Click on your MIDI device both in the MIDI Inputs <\/strong>and MIDI Outputs <\/strong>sections. This will \u201copen\u201d the MIDI ports for your device. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

Send SysEx data to your computer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Sending SysEx data from your MIDI device to MIDI-OX is easy. Depending on the device, you may need to enable certain functions or manually enter the SysEx codes. So first, refer to the MIDI device\u2019s owner\u2019s manual for its SysEx procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- In MIDI-OX, click View <\/strong>and then select SysEx<\/strong>.<\/li>
- Click Sysex <\/strong>and then select Receive Manual Dump\u2026 <\/strong>This allows MIDI-OX to accept incoming SysEx messages.
- A window will pop up saying (Waiting for Completion) 0 Bytes Received<\/strong>. Don\u2019t close this window.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Follow the procedure listed in the MIDI device\u2019s owner\u2019s manual to send (dump) the SysEx data to MIDI-OX. This may require you to type the code within the command window.
- You should see a string of SysEx code appear in the Monitor – Input <\/strong>window of MIDI-OX and the size of the SysEx data (i.e., 1033 Bytes)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Click Done <\/strong>when the SysEx Receive <\/strong>window appears. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

Saving SysEx data<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
After your SysEx data has been sent (dumped), you\u2019ll then want to save it as a .syx <\/strong>file so you can send the information back to your device. It\u2019s good practice to give unique names (i.e., device patterns) <\/em>and save them to a dedicated folder for easy recall. Saving the data is very simple. While you\u2019re still in the SysEx window, click Display Window<\/strong>, select Save As\u2026<\/strong> and click Save<\/strong>.
<\/p>\n\n\n\nSend SysEx data to your MIDI device<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n\nTransferring the SysEx data (.syx file) <\/em>back to your MIDI device is similar to sending it to your computer. You\u2019ll need to load the specific .syx <\/strong>file into MIDI-OX. Once loaded, you can then transfer it to your device. \n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Open the SysEx <\/strong>window, click Command Window<\/strong> and select Load File\u2026<\/strong> The SysEx code will appear in the window.<\/li>
- Once loaded, click Command Window <\/strong>again, and then select Send Sysex<\/strong>.
- MIDI-OX will not provide a confirmation message after SysEx data has been sent. Most MIDI devices do have features notifying you that SysEx data has been received, however.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

If you can’t send or receive SysEx in MIDI-OX<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
If the SysEx data shows as 0 Bytes after <\/strong>performing the dump, or if you receive an error message stating \u201cNo output device is selected\u201d or \u201cThere are no output buffers\u201d, there are a few things you\u2019ll need to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Make sure you clicked Receive Manual Dump\u2026 <\/strong>before performing the transfer.<\/li>
- If entering the code manually, be sure that it\u2019s entered exactly as listed in the user manual.<\/li>
- Double-check that your device’s MIDI input and MIDI output are selected in the MIDI device window.<\/li>
- Adjust the following settings within the Options <\/strong>menu:
- Pass SysEx: <\/strong>Enabled<\/em><\/li>
- Configure Buffers: <\/strong>16 buffers, 128-256 bytes<\/em> <\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Go to the SysEx window, click SysEx<\/strong>, select Configure<\/strong>, and increase the delay. 60ms is a good starting point, but if it still fails, increase it by 10ms at a time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
- Configure Buffers: <\/strong>16 buffers, 128-256 bytes<\/em> <\/li><\/ul><\/li>
- Make sure you clicked Receive Manual Dump\u2026 <\/strong>before performing the transfer.<\/li>
- Once loaded, click Command Window <\/strong>again, and then select Send Sysex<\/strong>.
- Click Done <\/strong>when the SysEx Receive <\/strong>window appears. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
