In this guide, we will show you how to record and import custom samples, and also how to create and edit kits so you get the most out of your gear. It\u2019s flexible, as you can record external audio directly to the SPD-SX or you can import custom .WAV files from a USB thumb drive or a computer. Check out our articles on formatting external devices on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/how-to-format-external-hard-drives-on-macos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mac<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/how-to-format-an-external-hard-drive-on-windows-10\/\" target=\"_blank\">PC<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Record-external-audio-samples\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Record external audio samples<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can record samples from an external source such as a phone, mixer, or dynamic microphone. First, connect <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/c786--Guitar_Instrument_Cables\" target=\"_blank\">\u00bc\u201d TS cables<\/a> to the <strong>AUDIO IN <\/strong>jacks on the back of the SPD-SX. You can then assign them to either a single pad <em>(Basic sampling) <\/em>or multiple pads <em>(Multi Pad)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Basic-sampling\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft underline customh4 swheader\">Basic sampling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basic sampling allows you to record a sample onto a single pad. When recording a sample, you can only select an empty pad that does not have a wave currently selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Press the <strong>Sampling <\/strong>button and use the cursor arrows to select <strong>BASIC<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Start streaming the external audio and adjust the <strong>REC LEVEL <\/strong>to a point where it doesn\u2019t clip. Once you\u2019ve found a good level, you can stop streaming.<\/li><li>Strike the pad where you wish to record the sample to select it.<\/li><li>Press the <strong>STBY <\/strong>button to arm the recording, and then press <strong>START <\/strong>to begin recording. Press <strong>STOP <\/strong>after you\u2019ve finished recording the sample.<ul><li>If you set <em>Auto Off <\/em>to anything other than off, it will start recording once the external audio reaches the specified level.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>If necessary, trim the <em>Start <\/em>and <em>Stop <\/em>locations on the next screen using the <strong>+ <\/strong>and <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>buttons.<\/li><li>Press <strong>ENTER <\/strong>to save the sample then strike the pad you selected in <em>Step 3 <\/em>to preview the new sample.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Multi-Pad\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft underline customh4 swheader\">Multi Pad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multi Pad sampling is used when you want to record sequential samples without needing to constantly start and stop the external audio. For example, if you are wanting to sample an intro, verse, and pre-chorus from a song that\u2019s currently playing, use the Multi Pad sampling function to capture them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Press the <strong>Sampling <\/strong>button and use the cursor arrows to select <strong>MULTI PAD<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Begin streaming the external audio and adjust the <strong>REC LEVEL <\/strong>to a point where it doesn\u2019t clip. Once you\u2019ve found a good level, you can stop streaming.<\/li><li>Strike the first pad to begin recording the sample to that pad. Strike the next pad to begin recording the next sample.<\/li><li>Strike a pad that has already been sampled to stop the recording.<\/li><li>If necessary, trim the <em>Start <\/em>and <em>Stop <\/em>locations on the next screen using the <strong>+ <\/strong>and <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>buttons.<\/li><li>Press <strong>ENTER <\/strong>to save the sample then strike the pads you selected in <em>Step 3 <\/em>to preview the new sample.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Import-samples-from-a-USB-thumb-drive\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Import samples from a USB thumb drive<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importing samples from a USB thumb drive is simple. Just connect it to your SPD-SX, go to the Wave Import menu, and then assign it to a pad. Audio files must be <em>16-bit 44.1 kHz<\/em> .<strong>WAV<\/strong> or .<strong>AIF<\/strong>\/.<strong>AIFF<\/strong> files. If it isn\u2019t, you will receive an <em>Unsupported Format <\/em>message.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Connect the USB flash drive to the back of the SPD-SX.<\/li><li>Press the <strong>MENU <\/strong>button, navigate to <strong>UTIL<\/strong>, and then select <strong>WAVE IMPORT<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Use the <strong>UP <\/strong>and <strong>DOWN <\/strong>cursor buttons to select the sample, use the <strong>+ <\/strong>and <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>buttons to mark the audio file, and then press <strong>ENTER<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Use the <strong>LEFT <\/strong>and <strong>RIGHT <\/strong>cursor buttons to navigate to <strong>KIT <\/strong>and use the <strong>+ <\/strong>and <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>buttons to select the kit you want to import the sample to. Follow the same procedure to change which pad it\u2019s imported to.<\/li><li>Press <strong>ENTER <\/strong>to import the sample.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Import-samples-from-SPD-SX-Wave-Manager\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Import samples from SPD-SX Wave Manager<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"background-color:#05629c\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-very-light-gray-color\"> <strong>TIP: <\/strong>You won\u2019t be able to play the pads while in <em>Wave Manager <\/em>mode. You will need to switch the USB mode back to <em>Audio\/MIDI<\/em>to perform on the SPD-SX. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another way to import <strong>.WAV <\/strong>and <strong>.AIF\/AIFF <\/strong>files are through the SPD-SX Wave Manager app. You first need to download it from Roland\u2019s website, and if you haven\u2019t already, the driver, as well. Follow these steps to use the SPD-SX Wave Manager app to import samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Go to the SPD-SX <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roland.com\/global\/support\/by_product\/spd-sx\/updates_drivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">download page<\/a> and download the latest version of Wave Manager.&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>Mac users: You will need to download and install the latest driver for your OS as well.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>On the SPD-SX, Press <strong>MENU<\/strong>, navigate to <strong>SETUP<\/strong>, select <strong>OPTION<\/strong>, and use the <strong>+ <\/strong>or <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>button to change the USB mode to <em>Wave Manager<\/em><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li>Connect the SPD-SX to an available USB port on your computer, and launch the Wave Manager app.<\/li><li>Open the folder location where the audio file resides and click and drag it to the pad you wish to assign it to.<ul><li>You can also import multiple audio files by navigating to <strong>File<\/strong>, selecting <strong>Wave Import<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Add<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Click <strong>EXIT <\/strong>once you\u2019re finished.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Roland SPD-SX Tutorial part 2 with Ryan Jenkinson\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CCHJ4w9chKc?start=239&#038;wmode=transparent&amp;rel=0&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Using-SPD-SX-Manager\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignCenter noUnderline customh5 swheader\">Using SPD-SX Manager<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><a href=\"#Getting-started\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"button flat s blue\">Return to top<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Working-with-kits\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">Working with kits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/roland-spd-sx-setup-guide\/#How-to-build-a-kit-on-the-SPD-SX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">created a kit<\/a> and imported samples, you can route your sounds, add effects, and create kit chains.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Add-and-edit-effects\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Add and edit effects<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three ways to apply effects; at the pad level, kit level, and master level. Applying effects to individual pads require you to <a href=\"#Route-the-pad-output\">route the pad output<\/a>. Adding effects to individual kits or to the entire device is a bit different.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Individual-kits\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft underline customh4 swheader\">Individual kits<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Press <strong>MENU<\/strong>, select <strong>KIT FX<\/strong> and then press <strong>FX1 <\/strong>or <strong>FX2<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Use the cursor arrows to select a parameter and the <strong>+ <\/strong>and <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>buttons to change each parameter.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Press <strong>EXIT<\/strong> and use the two FX knobs to control the level of the effect. Those effects will only save to the current kit.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Master-Effect\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft underline customh4 swheader\">Master Effect<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>While on the Kit screen, press the <strong>QUICK <\/strong>button, select <strong>MASTER EFFECT <\/strong>and press <strong>ENTER<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Use the <strong>LEFT <\/strong>and <strong>RIGHT <\/strong>cursor buttons to select the effect <em>(e.g. Filter, Delay, Other) <\/em>and use the <strong>+ <\/strong>and <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>buttons to select the effects preset.<\/li><li>Press the <strong>FX <\/strong>button located next to the FX knobs. You can use the other three buttons to recall <em>Filter<\/em>, <em>Delay<\/em>, and <em>S. Loop<\/em>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Route-the-pad-output\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Route the pad output<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can route individual pad outputs to the Master out, Sub out, or just the headphones. You can also route them through one of the two FX channels.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Press <strong>MENU<\/strong>, select <strong>KIT<\/strong> and hit the pad you wish to change the routing to.<\/li><li>Use the <strong>+ <\/strong>and <strong>&#8211; <\/strong>to change the routing. The arrow will show the current signal flow.<\/li><li>Press <strong>EXIT<\/strong> and then play that pad. The routing will automatically save to the kit.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Create-a-Kit-chain\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Create a Kit chain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kit chains allow you to arrange multiple kits for quick recall. This is very useful in live situations, where you use Kit number 2 on one song, and Kit number 89 for the second song.
