In the examples below, we\u2019ll use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/detail\/EA6350--linksys-ea6350-802.11ac-wireless-router\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Linksys EA6350<\/a> Wi-Fi gigabit router, but the process is similar for most wireless routers. If you are using another brand wireless router, check out its user manual for specific instructions. Follow each of the sections below to get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong><a href=\"#Connect-to-Wi-Fi-network\">Connect to Wi-Fi network<\/a><\/strong><ul><li><strong><a href=\"#PC-Wi-Fi\">PC Wi-Fi<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#Mac-Wi-Fi\">Mac Wi-Fi<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"#Change-network-name-and-update-Wi-Fi-password\">Change network name and update Wi-Fi password<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><a href=\"#Remote-control-setup-videos\"><strong>Remote control setup videos<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Connect-to-Wi-Fi-network\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">Connect to Wi-Fi network<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing to do with a new Wi-Fi router is set up the wireless network. That means you\u2019ll power it up and connect to its Wi-Fi network with your computer, tablet, or smartphone. You will find the default login credentials on the bottom of the router <em>(network and password\/WEP)<\/em>. If you\u2019re not sure, you can always reset the wireless router and set it up from scratch. Just remember that you\u2019ll need to reconnect any devices that may have already been connected.&nbsp; For a wired connection, just connect a computer\u2019s Ethernet port to the router with an Ethernet cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2-4GHz-v-s-5GHz-access-points\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh3 swheader\">2.4GHz v.s. 5GHz access points<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wireless routers are available in 2.4GHz and 5GHz versions. The difference is that 5GHz Wi-Fi routers are dual-band and can have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz access points at the same time, which is useful when connecting a device which does not support 5GHz. Also, because 2.4GHz uses lower radio frequencies it can connect over a longer distance at the cost of a weaker connection. 5GHz has less range but occupies a less crowded frequency area, which means less distance but less wireless competition and interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Default-Wi-Fi-login\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh3 swheader\">Default Wi-Fi login<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Wi-Fi router\u2019s default wireless networks name <em>(e.g. Linksys15095_5GHz) <\/em>and password <em>(e.g. xlrtrsmoog)<\/em> are found on the bottom or side of the device or in the included user guide. While you can continue to use these credentials, the network will be more secure with a <a href=\"#Change-network-name-and-update-Wi-Fi-password\">custom login<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Place the wireless router with at least 5 feet of distance from any other 2.4GHz devices or metallic or hard reflective surfaces.<\/li><li>Connect the Wi-Fi router\u2019s power adapter and position the Wireless antenna in a V position.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Allow it 60-90 seconds for the default Wi-Fi network to become visible.<\/li><li>Open your computer\u2019s network settings and connect to the Wi-Fi router\u2019s default wireless network.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"PC-Wi-Fi\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">PC Wi-Fi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wi-Fi settings are found in the Network menu and also located on the taskbar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From the Network and Sharing Center menu<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Click the <strong>Windows <\/strong>icon on the taskbar, type <em>Network<\/em> and click <strong>Network and Sharing Center<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Turn Wi-Fi on, and click <strong>Show Available Networks<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click the Wi-Fi network to connect to and click <strong>Connect<\/strong>.<ul><li>If this is your primary Wi-Fi network, check the <strong>Connect automatically <\/strong>box before connecting.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Enter the Wi-Fi network security key (password), and then click <strong>Next <\/strong>to connect.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From the taskbar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Click the <strong>Network <\/strong>icon on the toolbar, and click the <strong>Wi-Fi <\/strong>icon to turn Wi-Fi on.<\/li><li>Click the Wi-Fi network to connect to, and click <strong>Connect<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Enter the Wi-Fi password, and then click <strong>Next <\/strong>to connect.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Mac-Wi-Fi\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Mac Wi-Fi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wi-Fi settings are found in the Network area of macOS System Preferences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From the System Preferences menu<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Click the Apple menu, and select <strong>System Preferences\u2026<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Network<\/strong> icon.<\/li><li>Select <strong>Wi-Fi<\/strong> on the left and click <strong>Turn Wi-Fi On<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Network Name<\/strong> drop-down menu and select your wireless network\u2019s name.<\/li><li>Wait for the Wi-Fi status to appear green and indicate <em>Connected<\/em>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From the toolbar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Click the <strong>Wi-Fi menu bar icon<\/strong> and select <strong>Turn Wi-Fi On<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Wi-Fi icon<\/strong> again and then select your wireless network\u2019s name.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Change-network-name-and-update-Wi-Fi-password\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">Change network name and update Wi-Fi password<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once connected to your router\u2019s Wi-Fi network, the next step is to protect it by updating the network name and access password. This is important because you want to prevent unauthorized users from joining the network and interrupting your remote control connection. Consider using a secure name and password, but choose something you can remember in case you need to connect a new device. The router has an additional login name and password, but that\u2019s for accessing the router settings after you\u2019ve connected. You\u2019ll need those to reconfigure the router and network settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"IP-address-assignment-auto-DHCP-or-manual-static\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">IP address assignment: auto (DHCP) or manual (static)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Wi-Fi routers are preconfigured for automatic IP address assignment, also called <strong>DHCP (Dynamic Host Communication Protocol)<\/strong>. A device must be configured for DHCP to connect to the wireless router and receive an IP address. While DHCP can make things easier by automatically assigning IP addresses, you may prefer to assign them manually. <strong>Manual IP assignment<\/strong> uses manually selected <em>(fixed)<\/em> IP addresses and can help resolve network communication issues. It\u2019s like giving a number <em>(IP address)<\/em> to each<em> <\/em>house <em>(device)<\/em> on the street <em>(Wi-Fi network).<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NOTE: <\/strong>Disconnect your computer from any hardwired network connections before connecting to the wireless router\u2019s network. Otherwise, the router may not configure properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Enter <strong>192.168.1.1<\/strong> into your web browser to access the router\u2019s settings. The default username and password for many new routers are <strong>admin<\/strong> and <strong>password<\/strong>, but check the owner\u2019s manual for more information. If only prompted for a password, try both.&nbsp;<ul><li><em>(optional) <\/em>If you cannot access the router settings, check the owners manual to reset the network or log in to factory settings.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>If prompted, select the manual configuration option to bypass registration and internet setup.<ul><li><em>(optional)<\/em> Some routers, such as the Linksys router we&#8217;re using, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linksys.com\/us\/support-article?articleNum=142526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">optional setup wizards<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Click the connectivity\/wireless setting menu and update the network name and password. Wait for the changes to apply and then reconnect your device to the new Wi-Fi network.<\/li><li>Choose an IP address configuration mode: <em>automatic (DHCP) or manual<\/em>.<ul><li><strong>Automatic (DHCP): <\/strong>The Wi-Fi router will assign DHCP enabled devices an IP address <em>(recommended)<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong>Manual: <\/strong>The Wi-Fi router will not assign an IP address. You will need to configure the router and its connected device\u2019s IP addresses.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"Optional-settings\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\">Optional settings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Disable broadcasting<\/strong> so that users must enter the exact network name to connect. This makes your Wi-Fi network invisible to nearby devices and prevents unauthorized users from attempting to connect.<\/li><li><strong>Use automatic WLAN channel assignment<\/strong>. This will adjust the network to the best available channel for your location. Only select a specific WLAN channel if you want fixed-frequency operation and the channel performs well. Try using a Wi-Fi analyzer app to see the wireless network traffic in your area.<\/li><li><strong>Network management apps<\/strong> for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/linksys-smart-wi-fi\/id533516503?mt=8&amp;uo=4\" target=\"_blank\">iOS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.cisco.connect.cloud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Android<\/a> are included with some routers.
