That means we’ll show you each step to remove the old strings and add a new set. Whether you have been playing for years or just starting, the strings are what produce your sound. Changing them from one set to another is essentially about maintenance and taste. Follow the sections below to get started.

How to String a Bass Guitar

Detune and remove

Install new strings

Stretch and tune

How often should you change bass strings?

Clean dirty strings

Change string specifications

Set up your bass guitar

Related content

How to String a Bass Guitar

Selecting the strings is the hardest part, but changing them is where all the tone magic happens. In the sections below, we’ll walk you through the three phases of changing strings: detune and remove, install new strings, and lastly, stretch and tune. Watch the video below from our friends at Fodera and follow each step listed below to install your new set.

One-at-a-time or all at once?

Bottom line: it depends. One-at-a-time will keep tension on the neck and reduce the time it takes to stabilize. If you need to clean the fingerboard, then it makes sense to remove all the strings before installing the new set.

String changing tools

The only tool required to change bass guitar strings is a wire cutter, but there are other useful cutting and winding tools that make string changing easy and efficient. While some tools on the market are strictly for changing strings, others have multiple features which can accomplish a few different tasks. Keep in mind that some of the tools are also used when setting up a bass guitar, so having the right tool for the job is an investment that quickly pays for itself.

1. Detune and remove

You’ll start by removing the old strings. This the easiest part, so cut them one-at-a-time, just tune the string all the way down before doing so. This allows the neck to relax and better adjust to the tension change. You don’t absolutely have to cut them, but we do because they’re easier to remove. Old strings aren’t typically reused, but they can be repurposed or recycled.

Detune the string until it no longer produces a pitch.

Use wire cutters to cut it near the pickup(s) region.

Remove from the tuning post and bridge.

Clean the fretboard

Removing the strings is the best time to clean your bass guitars fretboard. Use a soft cloth to remove built-up skin debris. Visit your bass guitar’s user manual for specific care and maintenance instructions.

Continue to install new strings >

2. Install new strings

Now that the old strings are out, let’s put the new ones on. The most important tip when installing new strings is to not overtighten them too much too soon. That’s because the strings are stretching and need to adjust to the new tension. You should be able to install the new strings and bring them up to pitch, but they’ll need to be retuned a few times until they stabilize. Just be cautious that if tuned up too high (above standard tuning), the strings could be too stressed and snap. To prevent breaking, change each string one at a time, paying attention to which one you’re replacing and which tuner key is used to tighten it.

2.1: Identify and insert

Remove the strings from their packaging and uncoil them. Identify each string by either the packaging label or by the color of its ball end.

Insert the string through its corresponding bridge entry. Carefully pull it all the way through, using your finger to prevent it from grinding against the bridge hole. Align the string over both its bridge saddle and nut guides.

2.2: Crimp and trim

Leaving no slack, guide the string from the nut to the center of its tuning post. Measure an additional 2 – 3” of string from the tuning post, and then bend (aka crimp) the string at a 90° angle.

Measure an additional ½” – 1” of string from the crimp and trim it off with the wire cutters.

2.3: Untwist and wind down

To remove any twists that may have developed while tightening a string against the bridge, remove the string from the tuning post and push it about 4 – 6” back out through the bridge. Reinsert the crimped end into the tuning post and realign the string on the nut and bridge saddle.

Turn the tuning key to tighten the string, making sure the string is pushed down along the post, underneath each preceding wind. Keep turning the key, and as the ball end approaches the bridge, orient the string so that it is untwisted and has slack. Once done, continue to turn the key and guide the string until the ball end is secure against the bridge.

Continue to stretch and tune >

3. Stretch and tune

Once restrung, you’ll notice that the strings will keep going out of tune. That’s because they need to adapt to the new tension. One way to decrease the time it takes for the strings to adapt is by stretching them. Perform a stretching motion along the entire length of the string to acclimate it quicker and stabilize the pitch. Tune, stretch, repeat.

Using a tuner, bring the string up to pitch.

Lightly stretch the string along its length (the fretboard).

Repeat the tuning and stretching cycle until each string’s pitch stabilizes.

How often should you change strings?

How often to change bass guitar’s strings is open to interpretation, but it really depends on how you play the instrument. A studio bass guitar which is wiped off daily and only softly played with a pick could last quite a while before needing restringing. On the other hand, a touring bassist who uses their fingers will likely change their strings more frequently to maintain a consistent tone at each show. And, for either situation, basses could be used for just one song or the entire show/album. If you simply want to make your strings last longer before needing a restring, consider cleaning them with a string cleaner.

Clean dirty strings

The most common reason for changing strings is whether or not the strings are dirty, have lost tone, or don’t stay in tune anymore. When your fingers, palm, and arm touch the strings, they can transfer sweat, oils and dead skin. While a dirty guitar body can be easily cleaned, finger gunk gets caught in between the windings and changes each string’s character and response. If not wiped off after playing, it will build up ultimately dull the sound quality and reduce sustain. The exception to this phenomena is flatwound strings. Since they don’t have the same winding gaps as round wounds, they collect much less oil and debris. Plus, since they are naturally less bright, they will sound “the same” for longer and don’t require as frequent restringing. Each manufacturer and every line of strings varies in tension, tone, and feel, so there are a lot of options when selecting a new set. Changing the gauges (string diameter) will change the tension (playability), but also require a setup to accommodate the new string specifications. Changing the material (nickel, stainless steel, nylon, etc.) will change the frequency content (bright vs. warm).

When do I need new strings?

Replace one or more strings

Replace an aged or dirty set of strings (won’t stay in tune or loss of tone)

Change the playability (tension or feel)

Achieve a specific sound (sound characteristics)

Select new strings

There are a few reasons for changing the strings, but there are also different reasons for selecting one set over another. Choose a set whose specifications will best compliment both the performance and your personal playing style. That means when you change strings, you usually need to adjust the bass, too. The diameter (gauge) is the most influential variable in string tension, which affects the truss rod (neck bow), action (string height), and intonation (saddle location). If you’re restringing with an identical set of strings, you shouldn’t have to do much, but it never hurts to double-check.
