For the X Air series, this usually means selecting which <strong>Inputs<\/strong> show up on each mix channel and which channels or buses are output from the <strong>Aux<\/strong> or <strong>Main<\/strong> <strong>outputs<\/strong>. If you want to assign a specific bus to a specific output for a stage monitor, for example, then you\u2019ll need to route it. While the default I\/O settings will work for a typical live sound setup, it\u2019s essential for you to gain an understanding of how to make your own routes using the routing menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Controlling-Your-X-Air-Mixer\"><strong>Controlling Your X Air Mixer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff5c7\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: The Behringer X Air owner\u2019s manual refers to controlling your mixer from the Behringer X Air app for iPad or Android tablet. That app is no longer supported. You will be using the new-generation Behringer <strong>MX-Mix app<\/strong> for iPad or Android instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>X Air mixers don\u2019t have physical faders and knobs. You control everything from your iPad or Android tablet or from your desktop computer over Wi-Fi. Click <strong>Downloads<\/strong>. Under &#8220;Mac,&#8221; &#8220;Windows,&#8221; or &#8220;Linux,&#8221; you will see different versions of the <strong>X-Air Edit <\/strong>app. Select the newest version for your system. Download and install it according to the directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Routing-Menus-(I\/O-Settings)\"><strong>Routing Menus (I\/O Settings)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Assignments\"><em>Assignments<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the routing menu on your app, you\u2019ll see a grid of inputs along the top and channel numbers along the left side. By default, a diagonal line of routing selections indicates the assignments. Each analog input (microphone, instrument, etc.) is assigned to its respective mixer channel. However, these routes are not hard-wired as they would be in an analog mixer. With a digital mixer, you can customize the signal routing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you don\u2019t need to change the default route often, here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Route a microphone or guitar to multiple mixer channels, which allows you to use different signal processing or send levels for each duplicate channel. That means you can connect a guitar to Input 1 but have it routed to both Channels 1 and 2. You can apply different effects to each channel in parallel.<\/li><li>Play back channels from the mixer\u2019s USB connection. Use the <strong>USB Returns<\/strong> menu to make assignments then turn on USB for each channel. This is useful for playing audio files from a USB flash drive, as well.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"USB-Recording-&amp;-Playback\"><em>USB Recording &amp; Playback<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When connecting your XR18 or X18 to your computer over the USB connection for recording to a DAW, the signal that appears on each of your DAW input channels is dependent on its routing assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To select which mixer channels are routed to the USB recording channels, assign them within the <strong>USB Output<\/strong> menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To determine which USB playback channels are sent to your mixer, assign them within the <strong>USB Returns<\/strong> menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get stereo USB playback from an app on your computer, either use the USB Returns menu to assign USB 1\u20132 to a stereo channel or bypass the main mix by assigning USB 1\u20132 directly to the <strong>Main LR<\/strong> or <strong>Headphones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Using-Stage-Monitors-with-Aux-Outputs\"><strong>Using Stage Monitors with Aux Outputs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Aux-Out-Routing\"><em>Aux Out Routing<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common reason for modifying the routing menu is to assign a signal to an output, typically for a stage monitor connected to an <strong>Aux Out<\/strong>. To select which signals are sent to an Aux Out, route it to the desired output within the <strong>Aux Out<\/strong> menu. That means the input signal enters the mixer, is sent to a bus, and is then routed to an Aux Output jack. For stage monitors, assign a <strong>Mix Bus<\/strong> to an Aux Output and then send each desired channel to that bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"Signal-Tap-Point\"><em>Signal Tap Point<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can change the point in the signal chain where a bus is sent to the monitor. This is called the <strong>signal tap point<\/strong>. You can use this to bypass or allow the mute, EQ, and fader level functions. For example, if a bus is assigned to an aux output as pre-fader, the signal will be sent before the bus volume fader. In this case, the bus volume fader and mute will not affect the bus signal going to the stage monitor. Here\u2019s how to set that up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Connect a stage monitor to an <strong>Aux output<\/strong>.<\/li><li>In the <strong>Aux Out<\/strong> tab, assign a <strong>Bus<\/strong> to the physical Aux output connected to the speaker.<\/li><li>Exit the routing menu and select the Bus to view its mix. Each channel level fader now controls its respective Bus level send.<\/li><li>Turn up the <strong>Bus volume fader <\/strong>and then each of the channels you want to hear. Once done, return to the <strong>Main Mix<\/strong>.
