While it’s ultimately up to you when you change your heads, it’s always good to have a fresh set on hand, especially if it tears before a live gig or recording session, so in this article, we’ll talk about how to change and tune drum heads.

Prepare the shell

Install the drumhead

How to tune the drum

Drumhead tips

Troubleshooting tuning issues

Prepare the shell

TIP: When you’re changing heads, it’s always a good idea to put a couple drops of lubricant on the tension rods. Not only will this make the tuning process smoother, but it will prevent the lug casing and tension rod from stripping.

Before you change your drum heads, there are a few things you need to do first. Having a clean shell sets you up for success when you tune. Make sure you use the cross lug pattern for the entire procedure, as seen in the image below! Just like a car tire, you want even tension on all sides to prevent bent hoops or shells from going out of round. Follow these steps to prepare the drum shell for removing and installing the drum heads.

Remove the drum head and set your hardware to the side.

Wipe the bearing edge and inside of the shell with a microfiber cloth to remove any dust or wood shavings. This will take a little bit of time, but your patience will pay off! Follow the steps below to get your drum up to tune.

Place the drum head onto the drum shell. Rotate the head back and forth a few times just to make sure it moves freely.

Place the hoop on the shell, insert the tension rods into the lugs, then tighten them until they are snug on the hoop – finger-tight is fine.

Installing a drumhead.

How to tune the drum

When you’re tuning drum heads, you need to seat them before you tune them up to pitch. This helps the head stay conformed to the bearing edge, ensuring that your drum stays in tune. During the seating process, you will hear a cracking sound. Follow these steps to get the drums up to pitch.

Seat the drumhead

Go around the drum with two drum keys (keeping them on opposite sides of the drum) and tighten them by one turn until the head no longer has wrinkles and produces a pitch.

Lightly press down on the center of the drum head in a quick CPR motion a few times.

Tap all sides of the drum head directly in front of the tension rods. Sometimes it can simply be a defective head or bent tension rod, but it might also be a more significant issue than that. Follow these troubleshooting steps if you’re having these tuning issues.

Check the drum’s bearing edge

Take your finger and move it around the edge (known as the bearing edge) of the shell. If you feel any peaks or pits, the head may not seat properly. At that point, it’s recommended to take it to a local drum shop to get it fixed.

Check the drum shell’s roundness

Drums can go “out of round” especially if hoops have been unevenly tightened or if they’ve been stored in environments with extreme temperature or humidity changes. If it’s out of round, there’s really no way of fixing it so you will need to contact the manufacturer to see what the warranty policy is. There are two ways you can check the roundness of the shell, but make sure both heads and hoops are removed first.

Take a tape measure and go around the shell measuring opposite sides where the lugs are and take the highest and lowest measurement. If the difference between the two is greater than ¼” (which is the industry standard), the shell is considered out of round.

Place the shell on a very flat surface, then use a flashlight and shine it at the bottom. If it rocks back and forth or you can see light coming through a certain part and not others, it’s out of round.

Check the hoop

Place the hoop on a very flat, solid surface (not a glass table though; it might shatter!) and rock it back and forth.

If it moves, place it on the edge of the surface and gently push one side down. Once completed, check again to see if it stopped.

Drop the head into the hoop. If you have to force it down, the hoop is bent, so follow the same procedure above to see if it fixes the issue.

[142726
244960,244956,54264,244959,244961,244957
143139,328728

202712

<meta name="description" content="Drum heads need to be changed from time to time to keep them sounding great.
