In this article we will show you how to restring a Floyd Rose in 5 easy steps.&nbsp; The following article assumes that you\u2019ve already got your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/floyd-rose-setup-guide\/\">Floyd Rose setup<\/a> dialed in and you\u2019re replacing existing strings. Remove the string clamp from the locking nut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Use your 3mm hex wrench to loosen the low <strong>E <\/strong>string and <strong>A<\/strong> string clamp, and then unwind the low E string from the tuning post. Using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/search.php?s=string+winder\">string winder<\/a> will make this a little easier.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t remove all your strings. Replacing one string at a time is best because it maintains consistent string tension so that you don\u2019t have to re-balance your Floyd Rose bridge.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Remove-the-string-from-the-Floyd-Rose\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">2. Remove the string from the Floyd Rose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Use your 3mm wrench to loosen the string lock screw that pushes the saddle block tight against the string.&nbsp;<ul><li>Before installing the new string, make sure it\u2019s the same gauge as what you removed (changing gauges will affect your setup)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Use your string cutter to remove the ball end of the string.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Install-the-new-string\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">3. Install the new string<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Insert the cut end of the string into the saddle directly in front of the saddle block and use your 3mm hex wrench to secure it in place.<\/li><li>Hand tighten it first and then use the wrench to snug it up. Don\u2019t crank on it or you\u2019ll strip the screw!<\/li><li>Slide the string through the tuning post at the headstock and leave a little slack. Even with a locking nut, your windings should still descend the post without overlapping for maximum tuning stability.<\/li><li>Next, tune the string up to pitch and remove the excess.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Stretch-your-strings\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">4. Stretch your strings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With a Floyd Rose, stretching your strings is crucial. If your strings are properly stretched, your bridge will accurately return to the proper tilt and pitch when the whammy bar is not in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Stretch your string across the entire length of the fretboard and then re-tune.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Continue re-tuning and stretching until the pitch stabilizes. Once will not be enough.<\/li><li>The locking nut mechanism that we removed in step one stabilizes both the E and A string, so before we move on, repeat steps 1-4 for the A string.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Fine-tuning-the-Floyd-Rose\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader blackHeader alignLeft noUnderline customh2 swheader\">5. Fine-tuning the Floyd Rose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re almost ready for dive-bomb bliss on your guitar with Floyd Rose, but first you\u2019ll want to dial in the pitch of your instrument.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f2f1f0\"><strong>Don\u2019t break your strings! <\/strong>Once the locking nut is tightened, don\u2019t use the headstock tuners or you could break your strings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Set the fine-tuner on the Floyd Rose so that about 2\/3rds of the threads are showing and then tighten your locking nut at the headstock. That will give you plenty of tuning travel over the life of the string.
