In this guide, we will explain what DAW plug-in formats <em>(like VST or AAX)<\/em> are and which ones are compatible with your DAW of choice. Follow the sections below to learn more. <strong>Plug-ins<\/strong> are essentially virtual versions of real gear like an EQ, compressor, or reverb. They all have unique features, as well as file types so we\u2019ll tell you what the differences are. Since then, it has become an industry standard and is compatible with most DAW\u2019s. VST\u2019s were initially only compatible with the Windows OS, but they are now compatible with Mac as well. The latest version is VST 3.0. Unlike VST\u2019s, AU plug-ins are built into the operating system itself which means faster processing. However, the plug-in file path cannot be changed like with other plug-in formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mac<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\/Library\/Audio\/Plug-Ins\/Components (<em>individual user<\/em>)<\/li><li>~\/Library\/Audio\/Plug-Ins\/Components (<em>all users<\/em>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"AAX-Avid-Audio-Extension\" class=\"wp-block-cgb-block-customheader darkBlueHeader alignLeft underline customh3 swheader\"><strong>AAX (Avid Audio Extension)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"223\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/media\/2019\/04\/AAX.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1750108\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The AAX plug-in format (.<em>aax <\/em>file extension) is compatible with Pro Tools 10 and higher. This format replaced <a href=\"#-RTAS\">RTAS<\/a> and <a href=\"#-tdm\">TDM<\/a>. There are two different AAX versions; <em>AAX Native<\/em> and <em>AAX <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/insync\/dsp\/\" target=\"_blank\">DSP<\/a><\/em>. The difference is that <em>Native<\/em> is compatible with any version of Pro Tools, while <em>DSP<\/em> requires <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/store\/search.php?s=hdx&amp;sb=score&amp;params=eyJmYWNldCI6eyJCcmFuZCI6WyJBdmlkIl19fQ\" target=\"_blank\">Avid HDX hardware<\/a>. The 32-bit AAX plug-ins were compatible up until Pro Tools 10. Pro Tools version 11 and above require the 64-bit version to be used. Like the Pro Tools 10 DAW, RTAS plug-ins could only run in a 32-bit environment. It could only work with an Avid HD card which had built-in DSP, or Avid VENUE consoles. It was supported from Pro Tools version 5.1 up until Pro Tools 10.
