{"id":1713064,"date":"2012-03-21T15:06:59","date_gmt":"2012-03-21T15:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=1713064"},"modified":"2012-03-21T15:24:38","modified_gmt":"2012-03-21T15:24:38","slug":"mac-optimization-guide-for-osx-10-6-snow-leopard","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/mac-optimization-guide-for-osx-10-6-snow-leopard\/","title":{"rendered":"Mac Optimization Guide for OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sweetwater Tech Support recommends Avid&#8217;s Mac OSX Optimization Guides for Pro Tools.\u00a0\u00a0 The full article can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/avid.custkb.com\/avid\/app\/selfservice\/search.jsp?DocId=349739\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The following Mac settings taken from Avid&#8217;s article are recommend for any DAW software with Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Configure System Preferences<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen<\/li>\n<li>Choose System Preferences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Optimize_Energy_Saver\"><\/a>Optimize Energy Saver<br \/>\nThis optimization will free up system resources as well as prevent the computer from going to sleep or standby mode which can cause audio dropouts with audio\/MIDI software and hardware.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the &#8216;Energy Saver&#8217; preference.<\/li>\n<li>Set the slider for &#8216;Put the computer to sleep&#8230;&#8217; to &#8216;Never&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Uncheck the box for &#8216;Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Turn_off_AirPort_and_Bluetooth\"><\/a>Turn off AirPort and Bluetooth<br \/>\nIf your computer is equipped with Bluetooth wireless and\/or an AirPort card, these may need to be disabled for Pro Tools and other software to work correctly. \u00a0In addition to freeing up system resources, disabling these can help resolve DAE errors in Pro Tools.<\/p>\n<p>Airport<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the &#8216;Network&#8217; preference.<\/li>\n<li>On the left hand sidebar, click on Airport.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the button that says Turn Airport Off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bluetooth<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the &#8216;Bluetooth&#8217; preference.<\/li>\n<li>Uncheck the box for &#8216;On&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Disable_Time_Machine\"><\/a>Disable Time Machine<br \/>\nIt is NOT recommended to use Time Machine on the same hard drive that you&#8217;re recording to in Pro Tools or other software. \u00a0This can result in DAE Error -9131 (in Pro Tools) even if you have Time Machine disabled. \u00a0Even if you&#8217;re using Time Machine to backup your system drive, it is still recommended to disable it when using DAW software as it still uses system resources to back up the data.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the &#8216;Time Machine&#8217; preference.<\/li>\n<li>Move the slider to the Off position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Disable_FireWire_Networking\"><\/a>Disable FireWire Networking<br \/>\nThis optimization can help free up bandwidth in the firewire bus and allow FireWire devices to work more efficiently.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on the &#8216;Network&#8217; preference.<\/li>\n<li>On the left hand sidebar, click on FireWire or Built-In FireWire.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the drop-down menu for &#8216;Configure IPv4&#8217; and choose Off.<\/li>\n<li>Click Apply and restart your computer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Disable_FileVault_protection\"><\/a>Disable FileVault protection<br \/>\nThis optimization will allow your hard drive to work more efficiently with Pro Tools and can prevent DAE Errors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the &#8216;Security&#8217; preference.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the &#8216;FileVault&#8217; tab.<\/li>\n<li>In this window find where is states: &#8216;FileVault protection is (on\/off) for this account&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>If FileVault is on, click the button to &#8216;Turn Off FileVault&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Update_iLok_Drivers\"><\/a>Update iLok Drivers<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit the <a onclick=\"s_objectID=&quot;http:\/\/www.ilok.com\/download-ilok-software.html_1&quot;;return this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ilok.com\/download-ilok-software.html\">iLok website<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Download the InterLok Mac OS X Extensions installer<\/li>\n<li>Install it afterwards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Software_Update\"><\/a>Software Update<br \/>\nSome updates to your Mac software can cause conflicts with Pro Tools. \u00a0Disabling this will prevent your computer from automatically updating. \u00a0If there is an update that you need, you can manually update your Mac software my clicking on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen and choosing Software Update.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the &#8216;Software Update&#8217; preference and make sure the box that is labeled &#8216;Check for updates:&#8217; is unchecked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Disable_Spotlight_Indexing\"><\/a>Disable Spotlight Indexing<br \/>\nSpotlight indexing can sometimes cause conflicts with Pro Tools&#8217; database files, causing the drive to work sporadically. \u00a0Disabling this will allow the drive to function more efficiently in Pro Tools.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click the &#8216;Spotlight&#8217; preference.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Privacy tab.<\/li>\n<li>Every hard drive that is being used (internal and external) needs to be added to this list.<\/li>\n<li>To add a drive to the list click the &#8216;+&#8217; and then highlight the drive and click the &#8216;Choose&#8217; button.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat until all hard drives appear in the list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a name=\"Disable_Sudden_Motion_Sensor\"><\/a>Disable Sudden Motion Sensor (For laptops only.)<br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re recording in a loud environment, this optimization will prevent the Sudden Motion Sensor from kicking in and throwing a -9073 error in Pro Tools.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Double-click on the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop. \u00a0(This would be your system drive if you have renamed it to something else.)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the Applications folder.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the Utilities folder.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click on Terminal.<\/li>\n<li>Type sudo pmset -a sms 0 and press Return. (Typing in &#8216;0&#8217; disables it.)<\/li>\n<li>Enter your administrator when prompted.<\/li>\n<li>Type sudo pmset -g to verify that this has been applied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To re-enable Sudden Motion Sensor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go back to Terminal following the above steps.<\/li>\n<li>Type sudo pmset -a sms 1 and press Return.
