It can control multiple transports,<br \/>arm up to 128 tracks in a system, receive and<br \/>generate SMPTE time code, and slave an ADAT<br \/>system to time code, video, and word clock.<br \/>However, certain features of the BRC are<br \/>specifically designed for the original ADATs, and<br \/>the BRC is unable to control certain features of<br \/>Type II ADATs and the HD24. Keep the following<br \/>in mind:<br \/>Matching start times for<br \/>synchronization<br \/>Remember that, unless you change it, each Song in<br \/>the ADAT HD24 starts at the 00:00:00:00 time code<br \/>point. So, if the particular section of tape you want<br \/>to control also starts at 00:00, you’re all set for the<br \/>ADATs and the HD24 to synchronize. If not, you’ll<br \/>need to create an offset, a new time reference so the<br \/>Song Start time of the HD25 matches the location<br \/>where the song starts on the ADAT tapes.<br \/>Create a new Song Start reference on the HD24<br \/>by changing the value of Location 00 “Start”<br \/>in the current Song by pressing LOCATE<br \/>SELECT and following the instructions on page<br \/>44 for editing a locate point.<br \/>Do not use the BRC’s TAPE OFFSET<br \/>feature to create the offset between<br \/>the HD24 and the ADATs unless you apply a<br \/>BRC offset to the tape machines, not to the HD24.<br \/>(The HD24 appears to the BRC as three different<br \/>machines, but these cannot be offset from each<br \/>other for obvious reasons.)<br \/>Compatibility issues<br \/>Digital routing<br \/>The original ADAT system allowed copy-and-paste<br \/>editing between different ADATs under<br \/>control of the BRC. To do this, it recommended<br \/>that you connect the OPTICAL OUT of each ADAT<br \/>to the OPTICAL IN of the next. When you pressed<br \/>the DIGITAL I\/O button on the BRC, and selected<br \/>source tracks from one ADAT, all other ADATs<br \/>in the system went into Digital Thru mode, where<br \/>the signal from the source was automatically<br \/>passed through each ADAT in the chain, creating<br \/>an optical loop. This Digital Routing<br \/>(Optical Loop) is not supported by<br \/>the HD24. In a system combining tape and<br \/>hard disk, do not connect the ADAT Optical<br \/>chain in a loop.<br \/>In particular, there is no need to connect the<br \/>ADAT Optical Out of the HD24’s tracks 1-8<br \/>to the Optical In of Tracks 9-16, etc.<br \/>because digital copying within the HD24 is<br \/>handled more efficiently by the HD24’s<br \/>internal Copy and Paste commands.<br \/>Arming nonexistent tracks<br \/>For the purposes of arming tracks, the BRC<br \/>“sees” an HD24 as being three 8-track ADATs.<br \/>However, the current Song on the HD24 can be of<br \/>fewer tracks than 24. In this case, the BRC still<br \/>assumes that there are 24 tracks available. If the<br \/>BRC attempts to arm tracks that do not exist for<br \/>the current song, the HD24 will not arm the<br \/>selected tracks; however the BRC will show those<br \/>tracks as armed by flashing its REC READY<br \/>LEDs.<br \/>ADAT Sync<br \/>In a studio with a BRC, controlling both tape<br \/>ADATs and HD24s, there are reasons to connect<br \/>the tape ADAT(s) first in the sync chain:<br \/>– The BRC will listen to the first machine in the<br \/>chain to check for ready. Here’s an example:<br \/>If you have a BRC->HD24->XT sync chain,<br \/>bring up a song and play to the end. If you<br \/>locate to 0 and press play on the BRC, the<br \/>HD24 will play almost immediately.<br \/>However, the XT will not play until it’s<br \/>finished locating, which could be many<br \/>seconds later.<br \/>– The BRC’s SAVE SETUP TO TAPE and LOAD SETUP<br \/>FROM TAPE commands (which saves the BRC’s<br \/>internal data and song setups to the DATA<br \/>section at the head of an ADAT tape) are not<br \/>supported by the HD24. So, if an HD24 is first<br \/>in the Sync chain following the BRC, then the<br \/>BRC’s song data cannot be saved or restored.<br \/>– No “search” command: On a tape-based<br \/>ADAT, pressing both PLAY+FFWD or PLAY+REW<br \/>will put the ADAT into “Search” mode. This<br \/>mode is not supported by the HD24. The<br \/>HD24 will wait until the tape ADAT has<br \/>completed its search and locate to the new<br \/>timecode once the Locate command is sent.<br \/>– No pre or post roll outside Song<br \/>boundaries: On the HD24, Pre-Roll and<br \/>Post-Roll are only supported if you have<br \/>sufficient time in the song. That is, the pre-roll<br \/>value cannot access points before sample 0, and<br \/>the post-roll value cannot go past the last<br \/>sample of the song.<br \/>If you require Pre-Roll and Post-Roll, create a new<br \/>Song in the HD24 that contains the required<br \/>additional time, and copy\/paste the old song in the<br \/>middle of the new song.<br \/>Other issues<br \/>– No punching in on track buttons:<br \/>In a tape\/HD system controlled by a BRC, if<br \/>tracks are armed on the tape but not on the<br \/>HD24, punching in on the BRC will put the<br \/>HD24 in Record Pending mode (Record LED<br \/>flashing). Once in Record Pend, the HD24<br \/>cannot dynamically arm tracks, nor can it<br \/>extend the song length. You must arm tracks<br \/>before entering RECORD on the BRC.<br \/>– High sampling rates: The BRC cannot<br \/>control an HD24 if the current Song is at the<br \/>88.2 or 96 kHz sampling rate. The BRC is<br \/>designed for 48 kHz operation primarily<br \/>(although you can use the BRC’s PITCH<br \/>controls to reach a 44.1 kHz sampling rate).<br \/>– Songs are separate: The BRC’s SET<br \/>SONG command cannot select different Songs<br \/>on the HD24’s hard drive. (For one thing, the<br \/>BRC has only 20 songs in memory, while the<br \/>HD24 may have up to 64.) Nor can the BRC<br \/>issue NEW SONG or DEL SONG commands to the<br \/>HD24.<br \/>– Location points separate: While both<br \/>the HD24 and the BRC have 20 standard locate<br \/>points, they will not be the same. The BRC’s<br \/>location points and names are in the BRC’s<br \/>memory, and the HD24’s are in its memory.<br \/>The only exception is that, once you perform<br \/>a punch-in from the BRC, the punch-in and<br \/>out locations (L21 and L22) of both the BRC<br \/>and the HD24 will be updated to the same<br \/>values.<br \/>– Pressing All-Safe on the BRC very fast will<br \/>sometimes miss a bank of track enables on<br \/>the HD24.<br \/>– Auto Return display: Setting Loop<br \/>mode on the BRC will not engage the HD24’s<br \/>Auto Return feature, only Auto Play.<br \/>However, this is only a display issue, as the<br \/>BRC handles the looping functionality.<br \/>– Track Delay, not advance: The<br \/>BRC’s TRACK DELAY feature can control the<br \/>HD24’s track delay feature, but only in one<br \/>direction: it can delay a track up to 170 ms.,<br \/>but can’t advance them (since tape-based<br \/>ADATs were not capable of that).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","categories":[],"tags":[35082],"storecat":[],"itemids":[],"manufacturers":[33168],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v17.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Check out the Are there any known issues with using a BRC? page at Sweetwater \u2014 the world's leading music technology and instrument retailer!\" \/>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sweetwater.com\/sweetcare\/articles\/there-known-issues-brc\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_US\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Are there any known issues with using a BRC? - SweetCare\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Using the ADAT HD24 with theBRC Master Remote ControlThe BRC Master Remote Control has been thestandard for controlling multi-ADAT systems sinceits introduction.
