My software does not show the names of my audio inputs and outputs, only numbers

The MOTU OS X CoreAudio driver supplies text string labels for its inputs and outputs. Digital Performer, AudioDesk, and most other programs display these labels. However, some programs do not and will instead only show numbered inputs and outputs.

The I/O scheme for the 828mk2 is:

  • INPUT
    • 1-2 : Mic / Guitar 1-2
    • 3-10 : Analog 1-8
    • 11-12 : S/PDIF 1-2
    • 13-14 : Mix1
    • 15-22 : ADAT 1-8
  • OUTPUT
    • 1-2 : Main Outs
    • 3-10 : Analog 1-8
    • 11-12 : S/PDIF 1-2
    • 13-14 : Phones 1-2
    • 15-22 : ADAT 1-8

The I/O scheme for the 896HD is:

  • INPUT
    • 1-8 : Analog 1-8
    • 9-10 : AES/EBU 1-2
    • 11-12 : Mix1
    • 13-20 : ADAT 1-8
  • OUTPUT
    • 1-2 : Main Outs
    • 3-10 : Analog 1-8

Note: At 88.2/96 kHz, the ADAT I/O only uses 4 channels. Also, if the Phones are not specified as a discrete output (for example, they’re mirroring the Main Outs), they will not appear as output 13-14 and the ADAT output will begin at 13 instead of 15.

The I/O scheme for the 8pre is:

  • INPUT
    • 1-8 : Analog 1-8
    • 9-10 : Mix1
    • 11-18 : ADAT 1-8
  • OUTPUT
    • 1-2 : Main Outs
    • 3-4 : Phones 1-2
    • 5-12 : ADAT 1-8

Note: At 88.2/96 kHz, the ADAT I/O uses all 8 channels via 2 optical output ports (ADAT 1-4 on the first, 5-8 on the second). If the Phones are not specified as a discrete output (for example, they’re mirroring the Main Outs), they will not appear as output 3-4-14 and the ADAT output will begin at 3 instead of 5.

The I/O scheme for the 828mk3 is:

  • INPUT
    • 1-2 : Mic / Guitar 1-2
    • 3-10 : Analog 1-8
    • 11-12: Reverb 1-2
    • 13-14: Return 1-2
    • 15-16: S/PDIF 1-2
    • 17-24: ADAT A 1-8
    • 25-32: ADAT B 1-8

    • 9-10: Main Outs 1-2
    • 11-12: Phones 1-2
    • 13-14: S/PDIF 1-2
    • 15-22: ADAT A 1-8
    • 23-30: ADAT B 1-8

Note: At 88.2/96kHz, the ADAT section provides 4 channels in each of the 2 banks (ADAT A 1-4 and ADAT B 1-4). If the Phones are not specified as a discrete output (for example, they’re mirroring Analog 1-2), they will not appear as output 11-12 and the SPDIF output will begin at 11 instead of 13. The same applies when the Main Outputs are set to mirror another output pair.

For PCI-324/424 devices:
The Inputs and outputs will appear in the order in which they are enabled. For example, if you have a 2408mk3 with Bank A set to ADAT, Bank B set to ADAT with only 5-6 & 7-8 enabled, and Bank C set to Analog, in your software the first 8 channels of I/O will be Bank A ADAT 1-8, the next 4 will be Bank B ADAT 5-8, and the last 8 will be Analog 1-8.
Check the PCI Audio Console to see which inputs and outputs are enabled for each interface connected to your PCI-324/424 card.
