Kurzweil ExpressionMate Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. How do I Set up the ExpressionMate?
1. Plug the ExpressionMate’s Ribbon cable into the Controller jack on the ExpressionMate.
2. Plug one end of a MIDI cable into the MIDI Out jack of the ExpressionMate, plug the other end into the MIDI In jack of the instrument you would like to control.
3. Plug one end of a second MIDI cable into the MIDI In jack of the ExpressionMate, plug the other end into the MIDI Out jack of the instrument you would like to control.
4. First turn the power on to ExpressionMate, then turn on the power to the instrument you would like to control.
5. Make sure the instrument you would like to control is in Multi Mode. If your instrument does not have a Multi Mode, then set it to receive on channel 1.
6. The ExpressionMate uses MIDI Channels 1-3 for its presets, so make sure you have programs on these MIDI Channels.
7. If you are using a MIDI instrument as both the controller and the sound source, then turn the keyboard’s Local Control Off, otherwise you may get double note events triggered on some of ExpressionMate’s Setups.
8. You may want to set your instrument to General MIDI mode. The ExpressionMate uses GM programs for its factory preset Setups. It is not necessary to use GM mode, but some of the ExpressionMate’s Setups might call up random programs that may not sound right. When you create your own Setups you can select any program on any MIDI Channel you like.

Q. What are the Ribbon Controller’s Three Sections?
A. The ExpressionMate’s ribbon controller can be split into three different sections. These three sections can have their own MIDI Channel, their own Program and their own function. The three sections are defined by the triangles on the ribbon controller. The ExpressionMate’s ribbon controller can also be used as one long section. When selecting a ExpressionMate Setup a red LED in the Ribbon Configuration section will indicate whether it has 3 sections or one section.

Q. How do I Select an ExpressionMate Setup?
A. To select a Setup turn the Data Knob or use the – / + buttons.

Q. What is a Setup List?
A. Setup lists allow you to organize Setups so that they are easier to find during live a performance. To select a list Press one of the List buttons. The top line in the display shows the Setup number on the left, followed by the list number and the current list step. A list can have up to 16 steps. To select a new List press both List buttons at the same time. To Exit List Mode turn the Data Knob or use the – / + buttons.

Q. I made my own Setup but when I use controller such as Mod Wheel or Pitch Bend, they don’t seem to work. What’s up with that?
A. If you made your Setup using one of the Factory Presets or Factory Default Presets as a template you will probably be OK, because the most common controllers such as Mod Wheel and Pitch Bend are already mapped using the MIDI Remap controller parameters.(see page 54 in the owners manual). If you used Setup 64 “Blank” as a template you will have to first map the controllers using the MIDI Remap controller parameters or use the MIDI Merge function. The MIDI Merge function may be the best way, because this allows you to use the controllers that are already programed to the sound you would like to use, plus frees up the MIDI Remap controller parameters to be used to change any controller data to any other controller data.

To turn on the MIDI Merge function follow this procedure:
1. Press the Global button.
2. Press the left List button (“Edit”).
3. Press the left List button (“Select”) several times until you see “Globl Parms” in the display.
4. Press the right List button (“Edit”).
5. Press the right List button several times until you see “MergUnPro” in the display.
6. Turn the Data Knob or use the – / + buttons to select “Both”.
7. Press the Exit button to return to play mode.
