In over half a century of continuous innovation, Korg has introduced and advanced many aspects of electronic music technology and keyboard design. It began in 1963, when Tsutomu Katoh and Tadashi Osanai created their original Doncamatic DA-20 disc rotary electric auto rhythm machine. Korg quickly bloomed into a full-fledged electronic organ company, until they embraced the fledgling synthesizer market emerging in the mid '70s. From key transpose functions and onboard effects to sample + synthesis sound design, the keyboard world owes many industry-standard technologies to Korg.
Keyboards
From the miniKORG and MS synthesizer lines of the 1970s to flagship keyboard workstations such as the M1, Trinity, and Triton, Korg has produced many of the most popular keyboards in modern music production. One of the outstanding things about Korg keyboards is the way that they introduce, explore, and expand on technology across generations. For instance, the 1995 Korg Prophecy introduced a powerful new physical-modeling synthesis engine, which served as a foundation for both the Z1 and the ambitious OASYS workstation a decade later. The OASYS, in turn, gave rise to many popular Korg keyboards that followed it, such as the M1 and the Kronos series. Electronic Music ProductionWhile Korg's keyboards and digital pianos established the company as a staple of the songwriting and composing world, they've also stayed on the forefront of electronic music production and DJing for decades. Modules such as Korg's Kaoss Pad and Electribe lines have remained popular since the late '90s, and as electronic music production has returned from a predominantly software-based platform to analog-fueled tabletop modules, with affordable models such as the Volca series leading the way. A return to analog synths with models such as the MS-20 mini and the minilogue, as well as the unfailing popularity of the microKORG vocoding keyboard has also established Korg among a new generation of electronic music producers. MIDI ControllersAs powerful as their keyboards and synthesizers are, Korg is no stranger to in-the-box music production, and they offer a wide range of MIDI controller keyboards. Korg was among the first music-technology companies to widely adopt Bluetooth LE, an energy-efficient version of the Bluetooth wireless protocol. This connectivity, that you'll find on their microKEY AIR and other wireless products, offers extended battery life for portable devices intended for mobile music production. AccessoriesToday, Korg produces many products beyond the scope of keyboards and synthesizers. From large-format rackmount models to clip-on tuners, pedals, and more, Korg offers tuners to satisfy the needs of every kind of musician. Like the rest of their products, Korg tuners and metronomes are extremely popular and can be found everywhere from music classrooms to the biggest stages in the world. |
