sE Electronics sE5P - Stereo Pair Reviews

Small-diaphragm Condenser Mic with Cardioid Polar Pattern, 100Hz Bass Cut, 10/20dB Pad, and Shock Mount - Black (Pair)

Take it from Sweetwater, your mic locker isn't complete without a pair of small-diaphragm condenser microphones. Thankfully, you don't have to spend a fortune on them, thanks to sE Electronics. Their sE5 gives you smooth, full-range frequency response, and it's rugged enough for live use as well as for daily studio session duties. The sE5 has a versatile cardioid polar pattern with excellent on-axis response and off-axis rejection, plus a 100Hz bass cut. With its outstanding transient handling, the sE5 is your go-to mic for acoustic stringed instruments, and its 170dB max SPL and 10/20dB pad makes it ideal for boisterous sources like drums and percussion.

These mics are amazing and the quality is top notch. Used on acoustic guitars to drum overheads. Really versatile and I will be buying a send pair! I have become a fan of sE products because of their quality. When you listen to the recordings you go WOW. Truly a complete package it includes a stereo bar and shock mounts.

Great bang for your buck!

I just received these guys yesterday, and tried them out in an X/Y configuration on drums. I have to say the clarity on these are phenomenal! I flipped the high pass filter on and went to town. They arrived in a very nice hard case, with two shock mounts, and stereo bar(which is very well built). I compared them to my matched pair of Rode NT5's,Samson C02, and MicrophoneParts 991 PCB Mod mic, and I have to say the sE5 destroyed them all. The mid range is super smooth, and the 2k range is a little hissy, other than that great mics out of the box! Can't wait to try them in a spaced pair, and ORTF position and of course on different sound sources. Great job sE!

Fantastic Mics

By Jeffrey Crook from Highland, IN on December 19, 2016

I would like to rate these 5.5 stars as they are better than I could have imagined. I have a nice home studio and I do not use Pro Tools or any software for recording, mixing or mastering. I mic the amps for electric guitars and bass. I mic the guitar when I record acoustic guitars. I recently used these to record my Martin, one aimed at the top, just between the sound hole and the bridge, one at the 12th fret. When I played the recording back I was amazed! Absolutely the best sounding acoustic guitar I've ever recorded. Brilliant highs, lows and everything in between. Chrystal clear!!! My wife heard the recording and thought I was playing. She had no clue she was listening to the actual recording. She agreed, best sounding recording of an acoustic guitar I've ever produced. I've been recording since about 2006 and these mics are the REAL DEAL!

Outstanding!!

By Dan Birge from Shepherdsville, KY on August 16, 2016

I disagree with cliches like "this mic is great bang for the buck." This mic is even better than that. As the Neumann U87 stands on its own, so does the sE Electronics sE5. This mic captures what is there with all the detail. Warm and natural with no eq bumps to deal with. This mic is so good, I now own a pair of the singles and a stereo matched pair. sE's quality control is so good, I'm not sure that a "matched pair is really all that necessary. But since they offer matched pairs, I took advantage of it.

Call your engineer and order you one! If you have NEVER purchased from Sweetwater, I beg you to call 1-800-222-4700 ext 1328 and speak with Chris McCown. In nearly 7 years, I have spent a scary amount of money here, and he has been spot on every time! You do know that the sales engineer is assigned to you and you speak with the same person every time you call, yes? If you don't have an assigned engineer, make mine yours. You will thank me!

Beautiful looking and sounding affordable mics

By Bill Harris from Charlotte, NC on December 11, 2015 Music Background: Musician, home studio recording, mixing and mastering

This is a great pair of affordable stereo mics that come with a nice padded aluminum case, stereo bar and really nice shock mounts. They are very solid and well made, very nice quality and reasonably priced.

They are quiet, warm and natural on both my nylon and steel string acoustic guitars, my main use for them. I think they would be very versatile on other instruments and for just about any other uses calling for a quiet high quality stereo pair.

Check out the reviews and videos that are out there and see what you think. For me, they are a great deal and I'm very happy with them. I was not expecting them to be this nice.

My Sweetwater Sales Engineer told me he thought they were a steal. Given the quality and price point, he was right.

Great set of mics!

By Dan from Miami, FL on November 6, 2017 Music Background: Professional Audio engineer, sound design artist

Don't let the price on these mics trick you!
They are an amazing set of microphones, I've used them mostly for recording Overheads and acoustic guitars, they are very clean, with a very balanced sound, they make the instrument already sit in the mix because they are kind of bright (which I love).
On top of that, the case they come in is great!
I'm very happy with this purchase! It's Worth every dollar!

Seem nice

I was recommended these by my sales engineer for their quality and value. I'm a recording novice but they seem like a marked improvement over my previous microphone. They are well built and come with the essentials. I'm looking forward to using these more and seeing what they can do.

Great overhead drum mics!!

By Todd High from Washington, IL on August 26, 2016

I was in the market for some quality overhead drum mics for home recording. I was considering Shure SM81's, Shure KSM137's , or Rode NT5's. Geoff Allen recommended the SE Electronics SE5's. They were substantially less expensive than the other mics I was considering. After doing some research and reading many reviews I decided to give them a shot. After recording my first song with them I can tell you that these are fantastic mics. Very well built quality condenser mics. In my opinion you won't find a better quality product in this price range.

Great for acoustic guitar tracking!

By Matt Sikes from Texas on May 2, 2017

Love my sE5 pair - they are professional build quality and work great for tracking acoustic instruments such as steel string guitar. Solid microphones that hang with much more expensive options!

Shock mounts are a little on the cheap feeling side, but function fine and get the job done.

Great bang for your buck if you need a stereo pair. Sound great on upright piano and acoustic guitar.
