Your Ticket to Bigger, Fatter Stereo Guitars!

Sweetwater Sales Engineers get a lot of questions about how to create that quintessential "wall of guitars" sound. There's no easy answer to that, but the bx_shredspread plug-in by Brainworx certainly makes it easier. Start by inserting it on your stereo guitar track or subgroup. There are two main controls, Shred and Spread. Shred lets you dial in a touch of harmonic excitement to enhance your tone. Basically, you just turn it up till it sounds good. Spread uses Mid-Side processing to widen or condense your stereo field. On top of that, bx_shredspread can automatically pan single-channel signal to the middle or even emulate stereo using the same awesome processing in bx_stereomaker.

Brainworx bx_shredspread Mid-Side Stereo Enhancement Plug-in at a Glance:
  • Enhance your overall tone with the Shred control
  • Define your stereo field with the Spread control
  • SoloPan control lets you rescue mono guitar phrases
Enhance your overall tone with the Shred control

As we mentioned before, the bx_shredspread's Shred control is pretty much fool proof. Rather than being some pedestrian tone control that merely sweeps a wide bell-shaped boost across the frequency spectrum, the bx_shredspread's Shred control actively shifts which harmonics are accentuated, allowing you to easily dial in the growl and grit your guitar mix needs to cut through in all of its chest-pounding glory. And all you need to do is turn it up till it sounds good.

Define your stereo field with the Spread control

You could spend all day fiddling around with any number of plug-ins to try to enhance the stereo width of your guitar mix, or you could simply reach for the Brianworx bx_shredspread's Spread knob. This control is directly linked to bx_shredspread's impressive onboard Mid-Side processing matrix, which lets you achieve maximum impact with minimal phase issues. What's more, this Mid-Side matrix includes Brainworx's Mono Maker control, which lets you sum low frequencies, which really don't contribute to the stereo image much, allowing you to up the impact without crowding the stereo field.

SoloPan control lets you rescue mono guitar phrases

If you're combining guitar tracks for your stereo mix, and some of your tracks have single-track phrases that you want to keep, then the bx_shredspread's SoloPan function can save you a lot of editing time. Instead of cutting out each of those phrases and sticking them on center panned mono tracks, bx_shredspread's SoloPan function can listen for them and automatically pan them to the center. Even cooler, it can pan them to the center and then emulate a bit of stereo ambience (the same way bx_stereomaker does) to get these sections to sit better in your mix.

Brainworx bx_shredspread Mid-Side Stereo Enhancement Plug-in Features:
  • The plug-in you need to easily achieve the "wall of guitars" sound
  • Mid-Side processing easily enhances the overall sound of your stereo guitar mix or stem
  • Spread control lets you widen or focus the stereo field of your mix
  • Shred control lets you bring out the ideal harmonics in your sound
  • Mono Maker function lets you sum low frequencies to mono for added stereo clarity
  • SoloPan function can automatically pan mono passages to center and even add stereo emulation
  • Perfect for guitars, as well as organs, keys, drums, and other stereo elements
  • Compatible with AAX Native, VST, AU, and RTAS plug-in hosts on your Mac or Windows PC
Save time and frustration beefing up your guitar mix with the Brainworx bx_shredspread plug-in!

Nice dose of the right medecine

I took a chance on this plug-in and am delighted with the purchase. The width this plug-in achieves is quite remarkable and the mid-side separation is distinct and clear. Although the edgy distortion is handy right there on the plug-in I haven't actually kept it on a final mix but it does provide a potential solution for future projects and I like the sound quality of it. The plug-in will definitely get used on many guitar tracks as it provides an easy and effective way to separate two or more guitars into their own space in the mix. It fits nicely in with my mixing preference of having plug-ins that are optimized for specific instruments (or frequency ranges) so I don't have to mess around with top and bottom ends all the time. If this is how you work you will definitely like this plug-in.
