Nice little amp!

By Justin Thomas from CLEVELAND, TN on March 18, 2024

It's still new to me, but this is a pretty cool little amp. I saw this browsing Sweetwater online and it was also recommended to me by one of my friends who also uses one for his guitar. What I love best about it is the aux input for my phone, laptop, (or other device with a 1/8" mini output) so I can play along with songs or online lessons (looking at you Bass Buzz). Now, I can practice with my headphones plugged into the Vox amPlug2 Bass without bothering my family (or be bothered ;) ). The only negative is it "swivels" fairly loosely in the my bass' output jack once plugged in. I have an older Jazz bass and the output jack is on the side of the body instead of on the front near the knobs like I see with some of the newer Fender basses, so it makes seeing what I'm adjusting on the amp a little harder. It's a nitpick issue for me, so not enough for me to knock it down to a 4 star rating. Great little amp!

Great product that I'd highly recommend if you're unable to get an amp or have to practice quietly.

Great for practice!

Great sounding headphone amp. Love having the drum beats to practice to! This sounds great with studio headphones and earbuds alike. Very handy device, highly recommend!

Great Tone for Silent Reshearsal!

By Chuck from Carmichel, CA on December 21, 2023 Music Background: Music hobby

The Vox amPlug 2 bass headphone guitar amp is a great silent practice partner! I have used it with both my headphones and ear bud headphones. The ear buds sound good enough to where I will probably stick with them as the more comfortable option for extended rehearsal sessions. Love the option of being able to pick up my bass anytime day or night and not disturb anyone else in the house.

A word of advice: the user guide is not specific to the amPlug 2 bass model! It describes the functions of ALL the Vox amPlug 2 models. I finally realized that you have to look at the heading of each section and see which Vox amPlug 2 models that section is describing. Some sections pertain to all of them, some sections pertain to only one or more. Once you get that straight you will realize you only need to read the sections of the user guide that pertain to the bass amPlug 2 model.

Other than that it is great little rehearsal tool. BTW, it has an auto shut-off in case you forget to power it down which is helpful. Otherwise, the stated battery runtime is 11 hours.

Love it!

By Jeni on December 1, 2023 Music Background: Amateur

Sometimes I just feel like being lazy and either sitting on my couch or my bed to practice, instead of schlepping down to the gloomy basement where my amps are set up. This little guy lets me hear myself play but not bug anyone else in the house, or send my cats & dog scurrying under the bed because they all detest amp vibrations. Had to wait a while for this to arrive but it was well worth it. Will be convenient for going on trips too, when I need to practice but don't want to lug an amp. Definitely recommend!

Surprising

By Michael Darr from Owensboro, KY on November 10, 2023 Music Background: Lifelong musician, classical trained playing rock.

So, I got this mini amp going on two years now. I bought for the sole purpose to have something to practice with until I got the amp I wanted. I figured what the heck I'll give it a try. It was surprising! I thought it would sound thin or tinny. But actually it sounds pretty darn good. I also like the built in "drum machine" so you had something to play along with.
Actually, I find myself using this a lot. It's a great little gadget you con throw into your case and practice any where you want without bothering people or your music hating neighbors.

Vox AMplug 2 bass

By samuel McCoy from WEST BLOCTON, AL on July 10, 2023

Now that I have had this item for a little while , it's a very cool little device. Depending in the bass you use the loudness may differ , my active bass is very loud , I like the drum beats built in. Over all cool , I like being able to hook up anywhere in the house and practice.

WOW!

By Michael Norris from PAISLEY, OR on May 26, 2023

This little box packs a punch. The sound quality is great for a small plugin "amp". The versatility of tones available is very respectful. You can't go wrong with having three drum track loops to jam along to and practice. I WISH that I had this 30 years ago. Love it!

Big sound, little box

By Jaime from El Paso on April 2, 2023 Music Background: Lifetime musician, songwriter, singer, music lover, overall nice guy.

I was a bit sceptical at first. I heard other devices for use with headphones and never impressed. I researched videos and reviews and concluded that the vox box could be worth a try. For the purpose of practice, brainstorming, and jams playing along with me, I love this little device. Surprising sound for the bass guitar and simplicity of use once you get used to it. A bit on the lightweight build and requires a little care with use. Barely fits in my Ibanez but I bought an extension cord from machine to bass. Problem solved. Easy access to controls, out of the way, and doesn't stress the cord on my earbuds. Battery is long lived as well. This device serves my purpose well and is almost a daily use. I'm getting my money's worth, I think you will as well. Great job VOX. My guitar doesn't sound bad either.

The Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone Guitar Amp performs as advertised. A great alternative to waking up the rest of the house late at night, and a lot of fun for solo jam sessions!

Amazing

By Bib from NC on February 13, 2023 Music Background: Guitarist for almost 6

I am honestly blown away with how great this little headphone amp works. Incredible functionality in such a small package. The inclusion of drum patterns with adjustable tempo is a must for Bass players. Fantastic tone! With decent earbuds, this thing sounds fantastic. And since it's blasting only into my ears my wife is deprived of the opportunity to remind me how my playing sucks!

Just received Vox Bass Amplug2

By Steve Davies from Topeka, KS on November 30, 2022 Music Background: Played bass guitar off and on, in and out of bands for 35 years.

Just got this Vox Amplug2 in the mail. Brought it in, unboxed it, tore open the package, oh nice-comes with batteries! Stuck them in. Got my 5string, my phone, an aux cord, and headphones. Plugged everything up, turn on the little amp, turn up the volume, punch up a song on YouTube, adjust volumes to suit. I've been playing with Willie Dixon and Black Sabbath all night now :)
I've turned all the little knobs. Tone is basic, down is thick, up is brighter. Tried the drums, very cool, but i haven't gone through the different settings, just the first couple drum sounds. I'm happy with it.
But for the past three hours I've just had everything on the amp all the way up, and adjust tone and volume on the guitar, then adjust the aux volume on the phone. Works just fine. Perfect for practice and unbeatable for the price.
Be a bit careful with it, the plastic won't take a lot of abuse, but it's plenty durable to sit on the chair and practice.

Extrordinary

By Sweetwater Customer from TX on November 4, 2022 Music Background: Bassist

Exceedingly practical for anyone who doesn't have a bass amp which is easy to travel with (ie, most bassists). Great gadget! Hooray!

Great Practice Tool

By Jim Kerswell from NJ on September 20, 2022

It's probably the best practice tool I've ever had, certainly for the money. I don't remember it ever being faster from looking at my bass on the stand, to it's in my hands and I'm making music.

I use open-back Sennheiser 6XXs and I can practice while I'm watching tv with my wife. The three drum grooves are great, too. No need to mess around with a metronome. And you can walk around.

I love it.

P.S. Misspelling "practice" autocorrects to "okra rice"

Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone Guitar Amp

By Will from Astoria, NY on December 13, 2021 Music Background: Playing bass for over 50 years

Living in an small apartment creates issues with having my rig set up so I use this. It's my second one, the first was the first generation version. I really like these. They sound great and really make learning new tunes very easy with the Aux input. MP3s or Youtube feed is really handy. Plus it maintains peace with Management (read wife).
A great device used with a set of lightweight Koss headphones. My full size Sony's don't work, they need more signal.
Great tone, all the volume you need. I don't used the preset rhythm patterns, but they can be an excellent practice tool.
Highly recommended!!

Great Practice Aid

By Bob from Belleville, IL on November 25, 2021 Music Background: Beginning Bass Player

This is a great practice tool. It's nice to be able to plug this in, put on headphones and practice without disturbing the rest of the house. Very nice that they included an auxiliary input. I can plug in my iPhone and play along with the song. I have only used this for a few weeks so I can't comment on the battery life at this time but it uses 2 AAA batteries that are readily available.

Whaa???

By Tom from MINNESOTA on November 17, 2021 Music Background: Played guitar since 6, bass (seriously) since 15 so 40 years

Get outta here with this!! First impressions: cheap plastic box, this thing Cain't be any good!? Bu' wait a sec: I have used this with my Warwick Corvette and an Ovation Balladeer acou/elec and run my phone thru it for with-tunes practice. Results? Come. Awn. Surprisingly Great tone. It doesn't SOUND like a cheap lil box! I haven't delved into th' rhythms as of yet but first impressions: Good. Ver' ver' good! So...go ahead and get you one! You won't need your "disappointed-face". Whachawaitinfer??
If I could add one thing, it would be an extension cable so the box is not under the bass or behind the guitar and, thus, you could more easily access/ see the controls. Like I said, g'wan, gitit.

Really good!!

By Gerardo Campos jr from AZ on October 19, 2021 Music Background: Drums and bass guitar

Prefer over the VOX AmpPhone product

By coolhang from N.E. Pennsylvania on August 4, 2021 Music Background: Working weekend musician

The amp in this product has a much clearer tonal range than the VOX AmpPhone (Bass) product.
If you are looking, this VOX AmpPlug 2 product is the one to choose of the two offered for Bass from VOX.
The drum loops in this new product can be somewhat useful, also.

Vox Bass Headphone /guitar Amp

By Danny from West Virginia on July 13, 2021 Music Background: Very limited, I am 75 years old and the bass is the 1st thing I have every tried to play, and just started 14 months ago.

This is really an ideal way to practice when in an area where it isn't convenient to have even a portable amp with you, like in the hospital or a doctor's waiting room. The sound comes through very clearly, you can use it with ear phones, and no one else can hear what you are doing. It is very convenient to put in your pocket to carry and easy to plug in. I take mine everywhere I go. Even if the wife and I are traveling in the car, I can use it with my traveler bass while she listens to the radio and I don't disturb her. It is GREAT!

Love it

By Jerry Weller from Overland Park, KS on June 7, 2021 Music Background: Long time tubist, beginning bass player

I like to play on vacation just to keep chops up but it was always a drag having to lug an amp around. Now I can just stick this item in my pocket and have all the sound I need to practice whenever and wherever I want to. Done! One of the best purchases I have ever made! Love it!

This is the one

By Sweetwater Customer on March 29, 2021

This is all you need for silent practice. Would I plug the headphone port into a mixing interface and record an album? Hell no! Is it good enough for learning new songs or laying down ideas while listening to backing tracks? Absolutely yes. I play my electric bass in the park and get inspired. Listening through higher end gear that doesn't run on batteries sounds better, but then I'm inside all the time.

Just get this one. It's the best $ I ever put into my playing.

PS: get a little Bluetooth adapter for the Aux in and for fewer wires.

Great Practice Aid

By Steve from OH on March 28, 2021

This does exactly what it claims to do - let's you practice your bass without annoying your family or neighbors. The ability to use it with a line in makes it great for trying to figure out songs without everyone having to listen to you repeating the same phrase over and over. The sound is pretty good and you really can't beat the price.

Nice improvements

By Brainerd. H from Northeast on March 24, 2021 Music Background: 40 years+

This is my second Vox headphone amp. I've been practicing silently for years. The auto shutoff is much appreciated as well as the overall tone. I have yet to explore all the features because I just plugged it in, made needed adjustments, and went to work. With the size, convenience and price, it's a no brainer.

Vox Plug in Headphone Amp

By Marcel from California on March 17, 2021 Music Background: Beginner

I love it. Got it a few months ago. It produces great sound. Hard to believe for the size and weight. (I do use decent headphones.) I can clearly hear myself, as well as my phone input, where I can play tracks or metronome. Can balance them as I want. Can move around and play my bass outside on the porch, rather than in the dark spot where my big amp is located. Love the optional drum tracks at variable speeds (though I wish I could tell what the speed setting was). Has made it so much easier for me to practice without disturbing anyone while hearing myself clearly.

I'm not sure the battery life is as long as advertised, but can't tell for sure yet. And it does seems slightly flimsy, so I am careful. But I guess that is the tradeoff for the weight.

Great practice tool

By Henry Liedecke from San Antonio Texas on March 9, 2021 Music Background: Punk, Metal

I bought one of these a year ago and it's still kicking! Great for when you feel the inspiration at 3 in the morning but you dont want to wake your family or the neighbors. Great to practice in hotel rooms for the muscian on the road. Also has great features, 9 drum patterns and can control the tempo, and auxiliary line for device jamming. Even bought a Vox mini cabinet just for kicks! Best practice improvement ever!!!

Why did I wait?

By Sweetwater Customer from CA on February 16, 2021

Should have bought this a long time ago. The ease of use and portability make this a gem. Prior to this I plugged bass and headphones into a multi fx pedal. It kept me stuck in one place because of 5ft headphone cable. With the Vox headphone amp I can move around the room. In addition, no power cables or instrument cables required. Love it.

Small Amp

Very happy with the performance of this amp, and the service.

Much Better than Expected!

By Shane from Utah on February 3, 2021 Music Background: Former local musician

I had no idea what to expect with this thing, as online reviews can't really do it justice. I was afraid it would sound cheap, tinny, or scratchy, but none of that is true. It has a fantastic, full sound that feels exactly like I'm plugged into my bass amp, but using headphones. The body and the buttons/dials feel thin and breakable, so I'll be careful to never drop or step on this thing. On the other hand, you don't want some heavy device hanging off of your bass, so I appreciate the light weight.

The drum beats are basic, but useful to jam along to, and the tempo control is easy enough to figure out and use. There are tone and volume controls as well, both for the bass, and the drum loops, so you can make your sound fit your playing style. There are a few different effects you can add, but they're so thin sounding that I prefer the dry signal.

If you're wondering how this sounds with guitar, I personally love it. On the clean channel you get a nice, loud, dry sound that feels rich and smooth. It won't give you the crunch, or reverb of a guitar-specific plug-in amp, but it's good enough to practice and jam with if you like clean and dry.

This could be the best tool there is for jamming silently at home.

Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone Amp

By Neil Damato from South River, NJ on January 22, 2021

The Bass Headphone Amp is an amazing little practice tool. It's super easy to use, sounds very good and with the 9 rhythm patterns that are available as well as an "auxiliary in" to play-along with music, it's a super valuable little piece of gear. I highly recommend it for quiet practicing.

Love this little headphone amp

By Mike Parkin from San Bruno, CA on January 22, 2021 Music Background: Your basic novice

I'm a complete novice when it comes to playing Bass, so the idea of a tiny amp that could drive headphones was appealing so I could spare my family hearing me practice. This little Bass-specific Vox unit fit the bill at a great price. It looks like a tiny amplifier and features great sound reproduction and more than enough power to drive a set of headphones - I'm using either Etymotic ER4P's or a set of ANC Sony's with it. Middle settings for volume, gain, and the Bass's volume provide a good sound for my ear, with a lot of volume in reserve.

I was a little worried about how it would fit into the recessed cable socket on my Ibanez, but it fits just fine. Though, to be fair, it can be a little awkward to manipulate the controls for the functions that require pressing both buttons or holding a button while turning a dial. No problem at all on the Fender with it's front-mounted socket.

Vox claims decent run times from the 2 AAA batteries it takes, especially if you leave the Rhythm function off, but I'm yet to run my first set of (included) batteries through it so can't confirm.

All in all a great little product, and Sweetwater's customer services is seriously Next Level kind of amazing.

This is something you need

By Mike Ratzlaff from Lawrence, Kansas on December 3, 2020 Music Background: Hobbyist

This Vox Amplug is a great little piece. I have only tried the bass model and it sounds good with bass or guitar and if you want a little more fuzz it sounds good after your favorite fuzz/distortion pedal.
The very best thing is the drum pattern feature. 9 different beats and adjustable tempo make quietly practicing Way more fun.
For the cheap price it is a great thing for your kid wanting to learn or a seasoned player.

Surprise

By Phil from Illinois on November 8, 2020 Music Background: 25 years local and regional musician

I bought the Vox bass headphone amp to have something to jam with quietly. Truely wasn't expecting much. I was wrong. While it isn't the same as live sound it out performed the aux and headphone circuitry of most combo amps out there. I've used hartke, peavey, fender and gk amps. I like the vox the best by far.

Haedphone amp

This is really awesome to have in your rehearsal kit! Works great!

It is exactly what I expected.

By Dave "Gilby" Gilbert from Spokane on October 29, 2020 Music Background: Bassist, amateur, some jamming, mostly just for myself.

I bought this about two weeks ago, and I have been playing with it most nights. I mostly just play for fun on my own, sometimes in jam sessions. It makes it so easy to just grab your headphones and bass and play. especially since, for bass especially, small practice amps are terrible. I wish it had more drum options, but with the AUX jack it doesn't really matter much. I just plug in my iPad. It's simple, it's pretty affordable, seems well made, and like I said, I feel like they delivered on what I expected. Honestly, it kind of seems like something most bassists and guitarists should have. (Not relevant to me at the moment, but also, if you have a kid that's learning guitar or bass, you should probably get them one of these.)

Awesome practice tool

By Sweetwater Customer on October 19, 2020

This has been a great practice tool. It even sounds decent enough if you needed to run it as a line out as an "amp" I think it would hold its own just fine.

The buttons and features are intuitive.

The built in drum machine is useful.

Practice anywhere

By Sweetwater Customer on September 22, 2020

Vox Bass Amplug

By Steve from Louisiana on September 20, 2020

Love it! I like to practice late at night and this allows me to do that without disturbing anyone. It's extremely portable and the aux jack lets me play along with music on my phone. Great price, wish I'd gotten it sooner.

Why didn't I buy this sooner?

By Al from NYC on August 17, 2020

There's not to much to say here-this just works! There's 0 latency and you can pratice while you're on the couch. For the price you can't go wrong. Some people aren't fond of using batterries and while I understand that, I say do yourself a favor and buy rechargables. If you want to get a little more involved, you can use a mixer to send some more invloved mixed into the aux input this has. As always, a huge thank you to my sales engineer Jon Mostacato and to Sweetwater for being awesome and delivering on excellent customer service.

Awesome little gadget

By Eric from MI on July 14, 2020

Just got this five days ago and am impressed! I mostly got it for hotel and travel use, but living in a high-rise in downtown Chicago, late-night noise is always an issue. I have found that I love sitting on the balcony late at night and playing. The built-in rhythm tracks are useful and fun for improvisation. Most of all, the sound quality is very good. Now I can literally play bass anywhere!

A special shout out to Tyler Moore, who has been my sales rep for over six years now, and has been excellent in every way from first to last. Thanks for all the help and advice, Tyler!

Best practice device for bass!

By Brian Menke from California on May 30, 2020

I'm blown away how great this little thing sounds and works. It has completely changed my bass practice. The only thing I would ever change is to add Bluetooth so I didn't have the dangling cord for my headphones. But other than that, it's awesome. Great tone and built in drum machine. Sweet!

Awesome little tool

By Sweetwater Customer on April 28, 2020

Exactly what I needed for quiet practice! I love having the line in jack so I can play along with music, that's a great feature.

As some reviews have noted, the plastic housing does feel somewhat fragile, but ... just be careful with it? Seems simple enough, I don't fire see any issues with longevity.

Vox did a great job with their choice of features (line in, selectable input sensitivity, tone control, drum tracks, swivel plug). This has everything I needed. Highly recommend!

Whoa

By Stephen from Virginia on April 21, 2020 Music Background: Bassist in Virginia Man

This headphone amp is awesome. It has three gain settings, three drum beats (with the ability to change volume and tempo), volume and tone knobs. When you plug it in and put your heads phones on, it legitimately sounds like you're playing out of an amp. The best part? I can stand up and walk around! It's a strange and yet incredible experience when you realize that for the first time. There is an aux port on it but I'm not sure what it does exactly. Maybe you can play other music through it that would go into your headphones.

All that aside, this headphone amp is great and definitely worth the money. I might even buy my dad one.

just what I needed

By Michael Darr from Owensboro, KY on March 12, 2020

This little bit of kit is just want I needed it does exactly what I needed to do. The sound quality it very good but there is a bit of background noise but nothing to really complain about or takes away from how the amp functions. When I need to practice I don't need to drag the amp out all I need to do is plug this bugger in, plug the headphones in and I'm good to go.

The Vox amplug 2 bass has made it possible for me to practice in places where I wasn't able to before and without disturbing the people around me. Not having to have amp cord as well as a a,mp has been great. My fellow bass nut all want one now! It is amazing the quality of the sound you get from this light weight amp. If I have one con. Amazing little item

By Paul from Philadelphia on August 10, 2019 Music Background: Experience guitar player

I am guitar player who would like to learn some bass. I purchased a Hofner Contemporary HCT 500, but I did not buy a bass amp. The Vox amPlug 2 filled my need perfectly. The bass has a very full tone that normally would need an amp with a resonant speaker. When I ordered the Vox amPlug, I was concerned that it would sound shallow and flat. The opposite is true. Through the auxiliary Jack, I play YouTube music and can blend the bass very nicely. Now, I am in no hurry to buy a bass amp. If I ever gig with other musicians on the bass, I can make a more informed purchase after practicing with the Vox. As usual, Sweetwater provided excellent service at a reasonable price.

I've owned a Headphone Amp for Bass Guitar before (Dean Bass in the Box), and quite frankly it sucked!
First, the Headphone Amp couldn't handle the low end of an Electric Bass Guitar being plugged directly into it. Probably because Bass Guitars are meant to be plugged into full size Bass Amplifiers, not headphones. Hell, you can even blow out a regular Electric Guitar Amplifier if you plug a Bass into it and play too loudly.
Second, there was no Auxiliary input. So you could only practice Bass by itself... Solo. No Background Music, Beat, or even a Metronome to keep your timing on point for your licks.
Third, it was cheaply constructed. If I remember correctly, the "Bass in the Box" broke in less than a month!

NOT THE CASE with Vox's Bass amPlug!

I plugged some regular JVC Headphones into the amPlug and was able to hear the Bass perfectly clear, No distortion!
It has an "Aux" input to plug in a Mobile Device (MP3 Player, Cell Phone, CD Player, Computer, or anything with a 1/8" Headphone Jack), so you can actually play along & practice with music. But honestly, I never even used the Aux input, because the Vox amPlug 2 Bass comes with 9 built in drum loops that you can summon at the push of a button. Allowing you to play along with different styles of music to keep your timing on point without an Auxiliary Device.
Last, the Vox amPlug 2 (no matter which one you buy) is built rock solid. I know, because I've dropped my amPlugs several times and they have not malfunctioned yet.

All in all, I give the Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone Guitar Amp *****5 Stars*****.

Silent Practice

By Dave Amperse from Pahrump, NV on April 8, 2019 Music Background: Working (sometimes)

Exactly what I was looking for. I can sit in the same room while others are watching TV or reading or whatever and practice withooug bothering anybody (except myself because the sound is unforgiving of mistakes). I record music off of Youtube onto my laptop, patch in with an Aux cord and rock and roll! I recommend good headphones, though.

Nice Little Portable amp

By J from AZ on March 24, 2019 Music Background: Begginning electric and bass

Bought this device the Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone Guitar Amp to be able to take my Spector 4 string bass anywhere to quietly practice without any hassle. Works nicely when I'm in my 5th wheel. Many thanks to Tyler Davis for his help. The little treats are great too. Wife's waiting for my next purchase from Sweetwater.

Vox amPlug 2

By Jeffrey Swank from PA on February 12, 2019

Great little practice amp during those times when everyone else is sleeping.
Works great..slight noise at times when near other transmitting devices. Wouldn't
lower rating of review. It's not like I paid for overpriced Bose system.

Great deal for the money

By Sweetwater Customer on January 16, 2019

When you first unbox this thing, you will think: "light-weight, el-cheapo gizmo". But plug it in and start playing,
you will be pleasantly surprised how good of a sound you get from your bass. The drum tracks are cool too.
It is quite liberating to be free of your cord and amp - walking around your house, yard etc. - with your own personal jam session in your headphones! You can even walk around in public, laying down some sweet licks, without bothering anybody, unless you forget to wear clothes - but that's not the fault of the Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone Guitar Amp. So I give this thing 2 thumbs up.

Something every bassist should have

By Fred Aron from Fairfax, VA on November 22, 2018 Music Background: Low end support for worship teams

This is something every bassist should consider, ESPECIALLY new players! The idea of a sub 50 dollar device, that allows us to plug in with headphones and play with the supplied beats, or using the aux input for your music. I use it often to play along with my favorite records, or to practice worship sets. Being battery powered, practice anywhere is super awesome, the bed of my truck, warming up back stage, playing in the living room without annoying anyone, or practicing arco on my EUB! Seriously, this thing is the best stocking stuffer, the bass version for your bassist, the various guitar ones for non-bassists.

VOX Amplugs Are Big Hits

I really didn't know what expect but man I am blown away. This thing sounds so good and the drum beats really make practicing enjoyable. It works well with active and passive basses. I highly recommend this product. As always excellent service and fast shipping .

If you play bass, you need this!

By Bob from San Jose, Ca on October 19, 2018 Music Background: Professional-retired. Curent - Church orchestra, weddings.

I have been playing sax since "61, learned bass in '64 and played for 22 years. Don't know why, but I got away from the bass for too many years. I got the "itch" again, and in April I ordered a Squier, Jaguar bass from Sweetwater. Jon Krempel was awesome. He found me a red Jaguar when there were none in stock, and it was delivered fast.

I have a 200 watt bass amp that I can plug headphones and CD/MP3 player in, but it is not convenient to lug it to where I want to practice at the time.

I have an old Gretch, Silent Amp, headphone amp that I got about 1968, which still works but has a loud hum.

I needed to find a decent headphone amp, and the Vox amplug2 kept coming up in my search. I read the reviews, and was very interested. One concern I had was that some reviews said active basses caused a hum in the Vox, but could be eliminated by turning down the tone control.

I decided to order it, and am glad I did. This thing is amazing. There is absolutely no hum no matter where the tone control is. The bass is crystal clear, and as deep as I want to take it. When I play along with a CD I can blend the sound to hear the music and my bass clearly. I can get great volume/tone by using the controls on the Vox and my bass. The CD/MP3 volume is controlled at the device.

There are 3 levels of gain: High, Normal and Low. I prefer low gain, I like my bass deep.

It also has an auto power off function. I don't use the rhythm function much, but is great for working on your timing.

The plug can be swiveled to fit in any bass. Folds out of the way when not in use.

Dont't forget it is plugged in if you set your bass down. My bass jack is on the end, so I plug it in only after I am ready to play, and pull it out as soon as I am done or take a break.

I have Sony studio monitor headphones. You need good headphones to get the best sound. You don't need to break the bank, but el-cheapo phones probably won't sound as good. I don't think ear buds would work well.

You can put it in your pocket or store it in your case. it is only about 3.5" long, 1.5' deep and 1.25' high.

Now, I can play anywhere I want, on the porch, yard or anywhere in the house.

Like I said in the title, if you play bass, you need this little device.

Excellent solution for early morning and late evening practice including "play-a-long" exercises.

Freaking awesome!!

By Sweetwater Customer from Duluth, GA on October 14, 2018 Music Background: Artist

I read the positive reviews and figured I needed something for practicing when I didn't feel like holing myself in my studio downstairs. I have some M-audio studio monitors on my normal desktop upstairs with an aux-in available so I figured I'd be able to plug this little amp into the monitors and play tunes on the computer whilst I jam with them. Worked perfectly and this little amp sounds amazing - like way better than expected. I normally play Ampeg SVT amps and Gibsons basses, so I like a little grind to my tone. While this little doesn't go all the way to Ampeg-tone land, it does have a little grind with a tight and punchy delivery which did not offend me at all. :) For $... you can't go wrong with this! I am also going to get a guitar version of this because I like it so much.

Everything I need

By Steve from Geneva, NY on May 22, 2018 Music Background: Novice

I am picking up the bass again after 40 years, time off to get married and raise a family. I'm retired now, and can devote myself to finally learning to play bass well. The Vox amPlug 2 is superb and suits my immediate purposes. I can hear the instrument well enough to keep it in tune, while I practice scales and arpeggios. The rhythm patterns are a cool feature and will motivate me to pick up speed, and add variation to my practicing. At some point the Aux in Jack will allow me to play along with my favorite records. Its all the amp I really need right now, and fits the bill well. It does everything I expected it would do.

No need To buy a practice amp

Just when I think I've run out if music related gadgets to buy, along comes something like this and all bets are off. I gotta admit it's better than my collection of battery guitar amps and drum kits... Much cheaper. I was looking for a way to quietly suck on bass and this little box works great. Great tone through headphones (I would recommend decent over the ear cans) and effects! I've used an adapter and ran it through my bass amp and it wasn't bad at all. You can't go wrong for the $$$. I'm not a skilled bass player but I know what sounds good and this little box sounds good. So if you need or want to practice quietly, this unit is perfect. Portable and they look cool stacked up on your desk. I will own all of them!

Great little box - love it!

By Sweetwater Customer on October 28, 2015

For ten years or so I have been using the old 'pocket rocket' for bass, which is a great unit but was always prone to hiss that you had no choice but get used to. Recently the battery door broke, the 9V connector also broke and the input jack is intermittent now, so I needed a replacement. Wow for $40 I got what I needed and more with no hiss! In fact I bought two. The quality of the bass sound using good quality headphones is excellent. A real step up!

I had to admit I was skeptical, but for the price I had to try it. The AP2BS has exceeded all my expectations. Not only replacing several cables and a small mixer I was using before, but providing excellent volume and tone. This is a MUST have for any serious musician who practices their lines at home or on the road!

I have the original Vox bass headphone amp and it works and sounds great, mind-blowing that they could improve on the design and pack in a few more features. I love to play late at night, the other people living at my place are thankful for this great practice tool, as everyone can sleep well while I rock out.

Love it

By Oslo from Arlington VA on November 24, 2014 Music Background: Beginner

I had heard about these from a bass player friend who loved them. I had held off getting the original bass amplug as it seemed like a $50 crap shoot. But I kept and eye on them, and the new one came out $10 cheaper here on Sweetwater so I jumped on it before they found their typo.

I got it just to practice silently at home, and its perfect. Sounds great. And my favorite part is the mobility, I am no longer tied to my amp. The only downside is no metronome, but it does have a nice selection of drum beats an you can adj the speed.

3 solid hours of bass practice and I love it

By MB from NM on February 26, 2024 Music Background: old hobbyist

I just bought one of these, and it arrived today. I had been planning to play Rocksmith, but there was an xbox update... and a brand new amplug 2 bass waiting for me to test it out.
I decided there was no better time to give it a shot, so I plugged it in, plugged my headphones into it, plugged my tablet into it with my favorite tab program loaded up, and gave it a shot.

I couldn't tell a *huge* difference between the 3 sound profiles, but green light (overdrive) mode had just a touch of overdrive and really hit the mood for the music I was in the mood to practice. I practiced for WAY longer than expected and had a great time with it. I totally forgot to even bother connecting to play Rocksmith and just played bass via the Vox instead.

I bought one of these in 2019 and it has lasted me until 2023. Recently I begin to have an issue with some kind of short with the 1/4 plug that inserts into the instrument. It has never been abused so I'm a little disappointed that it didn't longer.

I'm going to order another one because they are just so versatile when practicing and transcribing songs. You can plug your ipod and headphones into it and then plug the Vox into your bass.

Arrived pretty quick , over all cool headphone amp I like the ability to play in stealth mode not attached to a floor amp. The different effects are ok some are louder than others meaning I use one of them more so I can hear better. It's not a deal breaker I still like the gadget. I would buy again. I love dealing with Sweetwater they have sale prices all the time. Better than local prices most of the time.

Indispensable gadget

By Jim from Maine on April 26, 2021

I am pleased with the performance of this little unit. The advertised features are not hype, the sound quality is excellent and it sure beats hauling an amp on trips. I used it over a 3 day weekend getaway and when I practiced while my wife slept she could not hear me at all. The auxiliary jack allows input from laptop or phone sources to play along to. The nine available Rhythm (drum) tracks give decidedly different styles to play along with. 3 Rock/Pop rhythms, 3 Funk/R&B rhythms and 3 "Other", which are a mixture of jazzy syncopated tracks. The rhythm track volume can be separately adjusted, which is a great feature. The only reason I did not give it a 5 star rating is that I don't hear a lot of difference among the 3 gain settings (High-Normal-Low) other than seeming to adjust the volume. All in all a handy gadget to have to allow practice anytime and in many places.

Amazing Must Have Tool

By Kris Keys from Arkansas on November 5, 2020 Music Background: Electric Bass 1 year

This great little device has allowed me to play my bass anywhere. All I need is a speaker, even a cheap $20 speaker sounds good with this amp. Great that I can also practice, in quiet, with a pair of studio headphones. I love that it comes with pre-loaded drum tracks for practicing rhythm and improvisation all with adjustable tempo.
Pros: Good sound and tone from a cheap little package, built-in drum machine, 3 Gain settings with tone and volume control.
Cons: Very cheap building materials, but it keeps the cost down so eh, needs Bluetooth and internal rechargeable battery option.

Great little gear addition

By Weston from CARTHAGE, MO on October 9, 2020

This little thing is great. I decided not to purchase a full sized bass amp, because I mainly use it for recording, and I can play through my audio interface and use headphones. This thing gives me some portability, and I can run through it into the interface to add some different effects on the front end. My only complaint, is the tone setting can add what sounds like line noise depending on the level, but that's not too big of a deal. I would highly recommend this for anyone that doesn't want to shake their house while they are practicing.

Nearly perfect

By Ethan from Oregon on September 14, 2019 Music Background: Guitar instructor, piano/mandolin, harmonica, bass, all genres

This is my third Amplug v2. I also have the AC30 and Blues models for guitar. I am an experienced guitarist but new to bass, and this is a great place to start.

Most of the negative reviews seem to be based on ignorance from people not taking literally 5 minutes to read the one page of simple instructions. Yes, it has 9 different rhythms AND tempo control. Very useful, especially in such a compact package. Actually sounds decent with in-ear buds.

I love that it has removable batteries and not a built-in non-replaceable battery. I use Sanyo Eneloop rechargables and when a set dies, I just yank em, recharge em and throw in a fresh pair to keep going with practice. You can't do that with a built in proprietary battery.

The high gain setting sounds full and clear with my passive bass. I suspect the medium and low gain settings are for basses with active electronics and/or high-output pickups.

I can't think of a better practice tool, especially at the price point. Also great for recording direct, and I have even hooked them up to PAs with good results!

Glad I bought this little gem...and I mean little! It fits in your case (or your pocket) for easy portability, easy use, and gets good battery life. And, its fun to walk around the house or backyard without a hitch. Would be great for a tour bus. Best feature for me are the 9 drum tracks with adjustable tempo. It takes my practicing to a whole new level!

I want to thank both Rob, and Marshall Oliver. I needed this by a specific day; Rob went out of his way to get this to me on a very short deadline. Thanks Rob! Marshall is always killing it with his awesome customer service and knowledge. He's always helpful, very understanding, and always goes above and beyond. Great guy to talk to as well. Sweetwater has a customer for life!

I've never owned a headphone amp before until now. I'd been looking for something like this over the past few weeks because of a bus trip I had coming up and this thing exceeds my expectations. This little headphone amp sounds great!

The only reasons I didn't give 5 stars are: the swivel plug can fall out of a bass with a recessed output jack, like my Yamaha TRB1005. A right angle barely fits my Yamaha, and this is maybe a few mm longer than a typical right angle; Other reason is the hiss, which you cannot hear with the tone on 0 (which is my preferred sound), or if you're playing along with songs via AUX IN.

I have not yet used the built in rhythms, but they sound pretty decent! Also, AAA batteries instead of a 9 volt is much appreciated.

I would highly suggest this to anyone looking for a portable, silent way to jam to your favorite songs, as this was my reason for buying.

perfect practice tool

By Mark C from Illinois on April 10, 2017 Music Background: bass

Pros:
portable, headphone input, aux input works great with mp3/online/videos/computer, 3 different amp tones, tone control, input plug swivel fits every bass jack... the perfect practice tool, and essential to me since I bought it. Price point is reasonable. Drum patterns might be useful to work on timing/locking in/groove.

Cons:
lightweight plastic shell needs to be sturdier, swivel could break easily (take it out before you set the bass down!), would love a bit more volume for the bass compared to the aux input.

Conclusion:
make it sturdier and louder and it's perfect

Nice Little Personal Amp

By Bringindafunk from Sacramento on March 24, 2017 Music Background: Advanced

I use this little guy all the time when I want to get some late-night practice in without waking up the family. It sounds pretty good and is very convenient. I like the built in drums/metronome and if I was going to nit-pick anything, it's that I wish I could adjust the tempo. I just downloaded a metronome app on my phone and use the input jack instead. Other than that, this is well worth the money and an excellent value.

A SWEET LITTLE DEVICE

By Yves Decargouet from Sebastopol, CA on January 12, 2015 Music Background: Private Studio Cat

This is quite an amazing little pocket amp!

Plug it into your bass, add a good set of headphones, an MP3 player if you wish, and you can rock out anywhere -- from wandering through your house to wandering in the woods.

The quality of your sound will depend on the capabilities of your headphones, of course. I'm using a set of Audio-Technica ATH-D40fs which have a bass-enhanced frequency response.

The only thing lacking is a tempo control for the rhythm patterns, but that's no deal breaker.

Well worth the money!

Excellent Way to Silent Practice

By Mark from Rockford, IA on February 9, 2023 Music Background: Guitar and bass player for 32 years

I have the original version one of this unit. It has developed some crackling noise and intermittently cuts out after many years of use. I decided to replace it before it dies because I use it all the time and don't want to be without a headphone amp. Plus, the old one always had a bit of a hiss anyway. The new version two unit has no hiss and the tone is much better. Really sounds like a big tube head. The drum loop feature is a lot of fun, so I'm glad to have that for just messing around. One thing that I do prefer about the version one unit was that it had volume and gain controls so you could adjust the drive level. This one has 3 different presets but no independent gain control. Sometimes the volume isn't quite loud enough on the lowest gain preset and I have to turn the mp3 player's volume down to compensate. There is no high gain distortion in this unit like the old one. And it's plastic just like the original so I try to be careful with it. Other than that, it's great. The ideal practice tool so you can jam away with your favorite songs, the drum loop or metronome without annoying anyone else. No regrets, I like it.

A nifty little thing

By Vincent on January 31, 2023

By Stephen from Evansville, IN on May 7, 2022 Music Background: musician, live band

well worth it

By Bruce Gagne from Detroit on February 11, 2022 Music Background: 47 years of bass and guitar, former Gibson MT division employee

This is fine option if you are living in a situation that doesn't allow you playing through an amp. The rythem section is a little inconvenient to find the one you want, but at least its there. I've had a blast playing around with it.

Does what I wanted

By David on August 3, 2021 Music Background: Bass and acoustic guitar

I needed something to allow me to practice while traveling without lugging an amp along.
I often am given songs to practice for church during the week when I'm working out of town. This little thing is perfect for that. Play the song through a Bluetooth receiver with my headphones and I'm ready to go once I get home.
I do wish it had more volume; but again, how much can you ask from an amp that fits in your guitar case?

Neat piece of gear that could use a couple improvements

By Zach from Colorado on February 15, 2021 Music Background: Bass player 30+ years

This is a fun piece of gear. Everything worked as it should right out of the box and overall I'm happy with it. I don't really have a use for the rhythm button/volume and I think that can be repurposed as an input gain control. My G&L SB-2 peaks it pretty easily and I imagine other, higher output, basses will do the same. I have to turn way down. I would also rather have a 1/4" headphone jack than 1/8". Most decent headphones are 1/4" and the ones that are 1/8" usually come with a 1/4" adapter.

Does what it's supposed to do

By Scott from Kentucky on October 26, 2020

This is a nice unit if you want to practice quietly and not bother others. The only thing that keeps me from giving it five stars is the light weight, it just doesn't feel robust. I'm gentle on my equipment and take care of it, but I can see where this wouldn't hold up well for some people who are rough on their stuff.

I can now choose to play my P-Bass to my heart's content after 9pm at night; without waking my wife.
The sound is good, with only small amounts of distortion, depending on your personal adjustments. It works VERY well for what it is intended for.
It doesn't come with earbuds (wish I'd known when ordering).
The preset drum beat selections are not what I'd prefer, but you can turn the drum beats off if you don't like the rhythm.

Vox Headphone Bass Amp

By Mike Edwards on June 23, 2020

I have been very happy with this. It is convenient when I want to practice away from my home studio. Tone is better than the last headphone amp I used, even on the B string.

Pretty Good

By James from Wisconsin on June 4, 2020

Nice practice tool Only downfalls that I can see is that the plastic housing feels pretty lightweight May not survive a drop Bluetooth would be a great addition Maybe on the next version? For the price it's absolutely worth it for a silent way to practice Would recommend and purchase again

Very Good for Practicing

By Ed C from SUWANEE, GA on June 4, 2020

I use this as a backup for my Tone Pocket's battery runs out.

Good for practicing and a great deal at this price.

Note: there will be some clipping if you have an active bass and use the high gain setting with the volume all the way up (I recommend mid-gain). It does eat batteries, but when I do use it I tend to use it for a very long sitting.

Does the Job!

By Sweetwater Customer on December 8, 2019

This connected right into my bass, and with my Shure headphones, really allows me to practice anywhere!

Great for Quiet Practice

By Jim H from Decatur, IL on July 10, 2018

Got this to keep in my office at work so I can practice on my lunch hour without disturbing everyone else. I'm very pleased with the purchase. Volume is good and I can hook the computer to it as well and play along with music and videos. I paired this with an Ibanez GSR100EXMOL GIO - Mahogany Oil Bass, and this setup meets my needs perfectly.

Big Bass, Little Box

By Christopher Kennedy from Columbia, SC USA on March 12, 2018 Music Background: Blues/Rock/Rap/Funk

The Vox amPlug 2 Bass Guitar Headphone Amp successfully and adequately reproduces the low frequencies produced by bass guitars needed to have a personal jam session. The added rhythm machine with adjustable tempo is a nice bonus - helps work on timing and improvisation. A recommended product.

Awesome, but...

By Sweetwater Customer on March 17, 2017

Be careful. I broke 2 of these already. They are bad*** but take care of them when handling the bass. If you bump it into a table or something they're not all that strong.

Vox AP2BS Headphone Amp

By Randy Vogeli from Charlotte, NC on September 17, 2016

Amp works great. I go camping a lot and this allows me to practice in my camper, without disturbing anyone. Love it.

Let's Me PLAY MY BASS!!

By Jimmy Quast from Easton, Maryland on January 26, 2016

Twenty years ago, music was an important part of my life. I played in a really interesting band for years, and have missed it ever since. So I recently decided to get out the old 4-string again just to see what might be possible. But I needed a way to practice along with my old recordings (and new ones) without disturbing the whole neighborhood, especially late at night when I actually have time to play. The Vox AP2BS doesn't just make it possible -- it makes playing my bass truly gratifying and fun again. I love it.

Great practice helper

By Rick from Mount Sterling on January 11, 2016 Music Background: Bass, guitar and drums

My daughter got one of these through Sweetwater as my Christmas present this year. I play bass for our church worship team. Our worship leader sends chord charts and audio files out weekly through Planning Center. As a result, I'm able to practice at home by playing the mp3s from my iPad and do so without disturbing anyone else in the house. I also like the drum tracks. I'd like to see a better variety. But, the drum tracks are nice for working on timing.

Great addition for practice

By Dennis from Conover NC on January 8, 2016 Music Background: Bass player

Order the Vox amPlug for bass. Got it this week, great out of the box. Easy to use, didn't know it had 3 drum pattern built in. Great for silent practice. The other plus is I use it with Shure 215 earbuds. The Vox and earbuds will all fit in the Shure earbud carrying pouch, just where I need it . A win , win

Nice Practice Tool!

By Steve M from Shelby, Mi. on December 29, 2015 Music Background: Converted drummer!

Bought this to use for practice while on vacation. Works very well, volume is adequate and easy to operate. Amp modeling is a bit limited, but adequate for practice. "Drum Machine" on-board is ok, easy enough to use but a little limited. Basses with active electronics will be a little "noisy", but usable. Passive electronics are much better with this. Nice tool for this purpose.

Works great

By Sweetwater Customer from Austin, TX on January 13, 2015 Music Background: Bassist, Drummer, Recording Artist.

It does the job I wanted it to well, just a bit touchy to get the balance between a nice full sound and overdriven distortion.

Very Practical

By Sweetwater Customer on December 1, 2014 Music Background: Non professional

About as simple as it gets! Very nice tone and good interphase with iPod/MP3.

From Amplug to Amplug 2- even better!

By Chris R. from Hartford City, IN on November 5, 2014 Music Background: Mid-life crisis bassist for a local jam band!

The Amplug 2 is much better than the original Amplug, IMO. It's got a really cool "Rhythm" feature which will play preset rhythms (drum beats) that you can play along to. Plus, I can change the tempo of those beats. That was cool!! I like the tone, too- bassy, full, functional. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles when practicing and it had just the right amount of thump. It also seems a little sturdier and made of stronger plastic. Oh, and the input jack is no longer fixed in position now- I can spin it 360- degrees (for better fit to the bass or for storage). I'm glad I bought the Amplug 2 for Bass, even though I already had the original Amplug. I sent my old Amplug to a friend who just moved across the country and has to be separated (temporarily) from his family. Now he can fill his down time with bass practice. It's a win-win!!

Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone Guitar Amp

By Sweetwater Customer from Colorado on July 28, 2023

I absolutely love this device. Great sound. The drum beats are steady and help to discipline my playing. I have had it less than 6 months and it doesn't connect to the bass. That's it for me. No more.

Good for the price.

By Steve Rose from New Martinsville, WV on June 13, 2021 Music Background: Semi pro in my area

This does what it's supposed. I like it except one problem. The instructions say that it lasts upto 17 hours on the battery. I'm lucky if I get 4 hours on the high dollar batteries. But still worth getting.

Vox amPlug 2 Bass Headphone

By Sweetwater Customer on February 3, 2021

It works well, for my needs. However, of the 9 selectable rhythm patterns, I can only get 3, but it kinda doesn't matter as there is no tempo control, and not a function I need. Aux in works flawless and is a nice feature. All 3 functions (headphones, aux, beats) have separate volume controls that work well. As far as battery life, I haven't owned it long enough to know, but at about 4-5 hours of use so far, it holding up good.

All and all I like it and find it a useful device to have, and seems to be made well. I feel it is a little over priced, but not bad. I think for ten dollars less and a digital tuner as opposed to the selectable rhythm portion it would be a much better deal, and a 5 star rating.

Good for general practice

By PJ on February 9, 2018

I was looking for a min practice amp that has a line-in and originally looked into getting a small combo amp like the Blackstar Fly3 or the Vox AC2. I was drawn to these products because of the size and portability but I didn't like the fact that the power supply was optional and sold separately. I wanted to see how much they were and did a research online and found out they cost about $20. With the price of the amp and the power supply, I thought it was too much to spend on a mini amp. Without the power supply, these amps require 6 AA batteries.

So I decided to give headphone amp a try and was initially impressed. It provides enough power for practice, doesn't require an instrument cable like the other amps, has a line-in, and takes 2 AA batteries. It's very portable. I can plug in and sit anywhere to practice.

I tried the rhythm generator and it's decent. I don't know if the tempo can be selected.
Line-in volume is controlled through the device you plug in with (mp3, laptop, etc)
It's little noisy but once I start playing, the bass sound overpowers the noise. Not a big deal.
If I don't fret the strings correctly, it buzzes and produces a loud muffled sound. This is kind of annoying.
I'm not good at slapping but I don't think the amp was designed for that. Didn't sound good for slapping.

Good so far

By Tony on November 13, 2017

I am well pleased with the product but wished it had AC adapter. Have invested in simple AAA battery charger to avoid replacement. Other than this, really pleased.

distracting hiss, but fine for its purpose

By James Fields from Ann Arbor, MI on May 31, 2015

It has a pretty loud hiss. Based on online reviews I think that's expected and not just a flaw in my unit. The workaround I've found is just to turn the tone knob all the way down. So I don't get to hear any high frequencies, but it's generally still enough for practice.

Otherwise: it works, and it's small, and convenient. Battery life with rechargeables seems OK but I haven't really measured it.

Noisy but does the job.

By Robb from SLO, CA on June 13, 2023

I got this amPlug to practice bass while away from my amp and it works for that quite well. I wasn't expecting it to be so noisy. I'm used to a bit of noise since I play a jazz bass but the background hiss overpowers the pickup noise. Like I said I just got it for practice so no biggie but it is somewhat annoying.

Vox Bass Headphone amp

By Sweetwater Customer on February 23, 2023

Just got these today. I didn't really expect it to be great considering what it is and have only used with ear buds, but definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Will try with better headphones later, but if I had to do all over again I wouldn't. I do have the ability to play my bass amp very low so can get away with that, and if I was in an environment where I couldn't then I guess it would be better than nothing, but just not as good as I had hoped it would be based on other reviews.

Excellent and fragile

By Phil from Northwest Indiana on February 22, 2023 Music Background: Professional

I really like this product. It offers some versatility you might not expect at this price point. It's really nice to be able to practice using headphones and apply tone modifications so I enjoy the way it sounds. However, these things are FRAGILE. I broke the first one of these I had, and its replacement already seems a bit dodgy despite my extremely careful handling of the replacement. NOTE: Sweetwater replaced it no charge, good on them! As long as you're mighty careful, you will enjoy this product.

MIxed Bag

By Sam from Knoxville, TN on February 19, 2022 Music Background: experienced amateur

If I hadn't left this thing lying around for two or three months before trying it out, I'd ask for a replacement, but that's my fault. I find the controls a little cumbersome, mainly because they're itsy-tiny, though once you figure out what they do, the tempo and mode buttons work fine. The tone control doesn't work at all and the control wheel just produces a scratchy sound when trying to adjust it. The product would probably be fine if it worked properly, and I'd be a five-star reviewer, but getting a product with a defect out of the box isn't a good way to start with a brand. Will I use it? Sure, I'll do something with it, but without the tone adjustment, it's worth about 25% of what I paid for it in terms of facility and enjoyment. BTW, I don't blame Sweetwater for this one bit; they're a great company that I've done substantial business with, and who have always been great. It's VOX who sold a defective product and my dumb lackadaisical attitude that's to blame.

Cheap Plastic

By BCB from Hatboro, PA on November 29, 2021

My last amPlug broke and I want to buy a new one but they cost $15 more than last time I bought one (a year ago!). I have no problem paying more money for a sturdier made product but they haven't improved anything to justify the jump in price. You have to be extra careful when using these amPlugs. The headphone and auxiliary input jacks are plastic so one wrong move and they break! Other than the cheap all-plastic parts I think they're great design for practicing. Vox, PLEASE! make a more lasting, rugged enclosure & jacks. I will pay more for the upgrades.

Not well made but works

By Sweetwater Customer on November 25, 2021 Music Background: Beginning bassist

I used the headphone amp for about 10 mins before it broke. I laid my bass on a bed for a moment to adjust the strap not taking into account where the plug was. On my bass it's on an angle. As soon as I laid it down it was, "crunch" and the headphone jack was done, repairable.

I love the idea of playing without disturbing the neighbors (apt renter) and it did sound good enough to practice. It was nice to move around freely. I just wish the product was more durable.

If you purchase one be REALLY careful when using. I am debating on repurchasing and being careful because it broke so easily.

Adequate

By David on May 21, 2016

I have had this about a month now. I bought this so I could practice when other people were sleeping, or if the sun was ought and I felt like practicing at the park. (and not have to lug my amp from room to room. It does what want it to do. And the rhythm patterns are a nice add on. Overall it's a good but not great product. I'm still having a little problem getting all 3 gain modes to work. I only need one so that is okay. The other thing I didn't realize is, it flops around when you plug it in. A lillte annoyinging, but I can live with it, until I can afford something else.

Meh

By David Horton from SUN PRAIRIE, WI on May 26, 2023 Music Background: Horn player. Three years as a COVID bass player.

Read a lot of great reviews on this. I should have looked closer at the description. Asked for an RMA.

It's not horrible, but it's certainly not five-star. The sound is okay only on the high gain setting. Maybe the medium and low are for basses with active pickups, I don't know, but it sounds anemic on a bass with passive pickups. (Except on high gain.)

Then there's the tone control. This should be labeled hiss factor, because honestly that's all it does... more hiss or less hiss.

The drum tracks are very limited. Rock, R&B, I think. Want a blues shuffle or just a straight metronome tick, forget it.

So it works. On high gain. With the tone turned down. And no drum track. It's okay, just not enough to justify keeping it.

Decent tone considering; a lot of undesirable hiss

By Ryan Taylor from CA on June 3, 2021 Music Background: Studio and Live sound work

Provides a surprisingly decent tone that is pleasing enough to listen to, but there is a lot of annoying hiss in the background. I would gladly pay more for a unit that provided a clean sound.

Hopefully Fender has something in the works for bass guitar that is similar to their recently released electric guitar headphone amp.

Disappointing

By Sweetwater Customer from MA on April 21, 2021 Music Background: guitar, bass, very mediocre

Based on the other largely glowing reviews, I think my expectations were too high. It certainly allows you to practice without disturbing others, but the sound is really not very good. It has a strong permanent hiss that gets worse if you use the tone dial. Anything past 3/10 is too annoying for me. It also feels very cheaply constructed. I was originally thinking of getting one of the AC30 ones too but will pass after using this one.

Good but...

By Sweetwater Customer on April 19, 2019

It uses AAA batteries.
If this were a rechargeable device, it would be stellar. I am a fan of the portability, ease of use, swivel jack and the sound (albeit quite hissy).

However, as it keeps me buying batteries (even "rechargeable" ones. Gross.) it is not the most ideal.

A rechargeable LiPo battery is a feasible solution to this issue and I have contacted Korg (owner of Vox Amps) about this but they have been unresponsive.

I haven"t tried the Nady Axehead but it maybe a better alternative if you don"t mind a non swiveling jack.

Effective, but not solid built

By Seano on July 6, 2018 Music Background: Musician, Songwriter, Producer

Works well enough for practice, so far. But it definitely feels built cheap. Lost the signal coming thru it briefly as well - not sure how long this thing will last. Using it daily, I'll find out how durable it is soon enough.

A Little Disappointed, but It Works Okay

By Michael Gardner from Illinois on November 2, 2016 Music Background: Bass Player, Guitar Player, Composer, Producer

The ampPlug is a cool device, but this one doesn't deliver what it advertises. It's supposed to have nine rhythms but it only has three, and they're kinda lame because there is no tempo control for them. I don't use them at all. Otherwise the amp sounds really good, and it is quite loud for such a small device powered by only two AAA batteries that I can get very inexpensively. Not bad really for the money. Good for quiet practice with a very small footprint - like no footprint.

Low build quality

By Matt Krieger from Libertyville, IL on December 26, 2023 Music Background: Bass beginner

I had this headphone amp for about a month. I used it almost daily. It does its job: it is good for practicing while keeping things quiet, and it is also inexpensive. It is also nice to just be able to practice pretty much anywhere. However, I had it plugged into my bass today and accidentally bumped it on my chair. The impact was very light, and I didn't think much of it until I looked down and the jack had snapped off. I was lucky to be able to get it out of my bass easily. The other issue is that there was a ton of hissing in the background of the amp. I thought maybe it was my bass at first, but when I plug it into other amps there is no noticeable hiss. Overall, I'm really disappointed that this broke so easily, it really was convenient to have. I would rate it 4 stars if it hadn't snapped.

sounds great BUT jacl input is flawed

By Tarantino on October 5, 2022

Sounds great and I love the idea of it's convenience BUT, the 1/8" jack input doesn't hold an 1/8" jack securely. after using for about 3 weeks, the connection began to cut in and out and then my cord fell out. I had to start taping the cord to the Vox to keep it from falling out.

Disappointing.

I want to be fair so I tested my jack adapter to be sure it wasn't the 1/4" jack to 1/8" adapter, I tried my adapter in other 1/8" inputs and it always snapped into place perfectly, but not in the Vox AP2-BS.

Sounds great but very Fragile

By Dan S on April 9, 2021

Bought one and it stopped working within one year so Sweetwater replaced for free. Thanks sweetwater. However, replacement broke quickly after cable got wound around something and it stopped working. Felt it was my fault so just ordered and paid for a new one. Snagged input cable slightly within week and immediately stopped working again. Would have probably got replaced again if I asked but couldn't bear to ask again. If you keep it in a plastic bubble it will be great. If you dare move with it and bump it forget it working. Should be a lot more durable for the money. Negative review is for the product not Sweetwater warranty or service

Underpowered

By Robert Petrolito from Connecticut on September 26, 2020

I had one of these 10 years ago and it was the best thing I ever bought. The on off switch broke off and I had to use a paperclip to turn it on and off. I eventually bought this new one and when I got it I was very excited to use it. But, the volume is so weak when playing a long with YouTube music videos that I had to turn the volume of the music down. I don't play it loud as it would be very bad for your ears. I was expecting more but I got so much less.

Noisy electronics

By Ksw on February 16, 2019

So long as you"re ok with noisy electronics then you"ll like this.
Not sure why they can get away with this in a digital world where
quality electronics are an expected norm? Use the gain dial to
increase/decrease the noise of the amp then play your bass lines with the noise.

VOX headphone amp for Bass

By Mike Robertsonb from Cincinnati, Ohio on January 12, 2018 Music Background: Bass guitar in Holiday Inn weekend bands since I was 14 in 1964.

Have not finalized decision yet on the VOx headphone amp. I did not expect terrific sound but still working on guitar settings and amp settings to try and get a decent sound for remote practice thru headphones. Just not getting good volume and sound??

Overall though with Sweetwater, you got my Hofner Bass delivered 3 days before Christmas when all my local guitar stores in Cincinnati had a delivery date of February or March, 2017. Service is great! And pricing just as good. I will buy all from Sweetwater from now on instead of local music stores.

Not what I thought it would be.

By Daniel Cameron from WOODLAND, CA on December 29, 2023

Bought this so I could practice silently in my room. Couldn't get volume much above a whisper. Ended up getting the Boss Waza Air bass headphone outfit, which works MUCH better.

Disappointing, cheap construction, mediocre audio quality

By A. Blate from NC on May 25, 2023

To be fair, this is an inexpensive product and my expectations were set accordingly. However, the construction is of cheap plastic, the controls are fiddly to access, particularly when installed on an instrument, and, most of all, the audio performance is poor, particularly in the low-frequency range -- where you need it for a "bass" amplifier.

The electronics are noisy and the selection of gain modes really just changes the volume and not the sound character; this might be useful for matching impedance among passive and active instruments. The metronome/drum feature is nigh on unusable due to the interaction with the control wheel -- very hard to control tempo or to adjust in situ.

I'd save your money and purchase a "preamp" pedal with a headphone output.

Not as good as the original Vox AmPlug for Bass

By Sweetwater Customer from Woodinville, WA USA on January 12, 2015 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Producer, Pro Musician

I have the original Vox AmPlug for Bass and decided to get this one after reading reviews about how good it sounded. It's true that the sound is more clear, but there are too many controls and I cannot get the drive or volume that I get out of the original AmPlug for Bass. This makes it harder to hear myself when I'm trying to play along with MP3s from my phone, which is my primary use for this device.

The drum patterns are essentially useless. They're nice if you're trying to get your timing down, but it's just as easy to play along with prerecorded music from an MP3 player of some kind.

The simple 3 levels of gain control don't work well with my high output pickups. My bass either clips because the compressor is not quick enough, or the volume is too low to be useful if it set it to one of the lower input levels. I much prefer the potentiometer gain setting on the original unit.

The controls are much more complicated on this updated unit because they've added so many new features. These are unnecessary features, in my opinion, and just make the unit harder to use. You need to read the manual to understand everything it does because the user interface is definitely not intuitive.

Still, it sounds nice when you're not playing along with anything else. The sound quality is definitely cleaner than the original with better highs. I just wish I could get more level and some nice distortion out of it. If they made this unit with the original controls, I'd be much happier.

Broke with 3 uses

By Bella Morgan from CASTLE ROCK, CO on November 16, 2022

I was really liking this mini portable amp but within the third use it fell apart where the connector part is. I tried gluing it back together but it fell apart and now it barley works. Sad

Didn't work at all - extremely low-quality build

By Tom Tolleson from Brooklyn, NY on November 5, 2021

This item was non-functional right out of the package. I went through all three color settings and effects with three different headphones and the bass volume all the way up. It just didn't work. Called Sweetwater service engineer. It didn't work.
Even if it had worked I'd feel lousy about having paid $ for something that looks like it came out of a gumball machine. I'd put the price tag on this thing at about $ if you know it's going to actually work. Obviously even that is a crap shoot.
This is not Sweetwater's fault - the packaging showed no sign of damage and they're just selling this based on the wholesale price they get from Vox (or whomever has licensed the Vox name to brand and sell these items).

Stopped working after 3 uses

By Max Ohsawa from Myrtle Beach, SC on October 26, 2021

Beginner bass learner here on a tight budget. Figured I could cut a corner and get a mini plugin amp. Worked well enough the first two times. Just turned it on today and all it does is hiss and pop. Can't hear the bass so it's now worthless.

By John from Massachusetts on August 19, 2018

Bought this little thing for bass practice. Super cheap plastic junk. Never worked all that well...scratchy inputs , cut out etc. Stopped working completely after a few months. Its just junk. Buy a little practice amp with AUX in and save yourself from buying this thing.
