sE Electronics X1 S Studio Bundle with Shockmount & Isolation Filter Reviews

Recording Bundle with sE Electronics X1 S Condenser Microphone, Isolation Filter, Shockmount, Pop Filter, and 3m Mic Cable

This sE Electronics Studio Bundle helps you achieve isolated vocals in small home studios and untreated environments. The sE Electronics X1 S large-diaphragm condenser mic balances warmth and clarity, making it wonderful for vocals and instruments alike. The RF-X Reflexion Filter mounts your microphone inside a sound-dampening filter to keep extraneous noise from being picked up by the microphone. And a pop filter is included in the package to minimize annoying plosives. With this setup you'll be equipped to record clear, focused vocals, even in rooms with imperfect acoustics.

Great package bundle.

The X1 bundle is well fabricated and has been well thought out. I installed the unit onto an old Atlas microphone stand that has some weight to it and there is no problems with floor noise or any vibrations. If you sing away from the microphone and slowly walk up to where you need to be, this unit works flawlessly just like it's supposed to. I put it together and hooked up the microphone to my mixer first just for a test run, then to my SSL interface and was recording in a half hour. Many thanks to Tyler Henry for his outstanding patience with me as I am taking my time to get everything right. I have no reason to go anywhere else for my gear. Sweetwater has always been tops with me. Also I ordered this at 3:30pm on a Wednesday and received it 4:30pm on Thursday the very next day. Thanks again Tyler. I LOVE this mic!

By Adam Sherman from Ridgway, CO on February 6, 2022 Music Background: Talented novice? Lame pro player? Who can say???

Have had my sE X1 S for a year now. I use it exclusively for vocals, and purchased it in the "bundle" with a decent-quality mic-shield. It also came with an excellent shock-mount and a nice pop-filter that mounts right on the mic's shock mount.
This was my first "decent" vocal mic - for years before this, I used various low/mid-level dynamic hand-helds on a stand, the best of which were my Sennheiser 835 and 865 (which is a condenser). I also had the ubiquitous MXL 770. They all 'did the job' - the Senn's were great for live applications and the MXL was in the studio - but the sE, even at it's modest price-point, was a HUUUGE step up in fidelity. My vox recordings sound MUCH better. The MXL, while reasonably sensitive, required an ENORMOUS amount of EQ'ing and tweaking to get a good vocal sound - lots of corrections to be done, and STILL had notable problems with various points in the vocal range being poorly or inaccurately reproduced. The sE sounds like a dream by comparison. It won't turn Gilbert Godfried into Freddie Mercury...but it's a MAJOR step up from budget/cheap mic's.
If there's any possible con - it's that the LD condenser is SO sensitive...it'll pick up your nose-hairs moving when you breathe!!! I'd certainly love to have a Neumann...but overall, this is one of those pieces that proves to be an amazing price/value tradeoff.
The other thing is that between the mic/mount and the mic-shield, it's a bit heavy and mounting it on a mic-stand to be well-balanced and stable was a bit of a challenge. But I suspect that's the case with ANY solidly-constructed mic, and a bulky mic-shield. I probably just need a super-heavy-duty mic stand for this setup.
Great video on the origins/construction of this brand.
Overall: a FANTASTIC purchase. And special thanks to my guy Gage Massey for his consultation/recommendation - I was considering at least a half-dozen comparable mic's in the same price-range, and this one was a great choice.

Great For Home Studio

By Bill from North California on July 6, 2021 Music Background: Semi-pro musician (guitar, bass, banjo), amateur producer.

I have an amateur home studio. It is crammed into a 10x10 bedroom with closet door and window surfaces that make it difficult to control reflections and ambient noise. The isolation filter has been a great solution for recording vocals in this limited (and sometimes hostile) audio environment. Moreover, the X1-S mic is really quite an impressive addition to my small collection of mics. Overall, I am very satisfied with the sE studio bundle. My expectations were exceeded!

Superb performance; extremely sensitive

By Brian Rosenau from San Antonio on May 25, 2021 Music Background: Audiophile and Recording Studio Owner/Engineer

This is a great setup but be aware that the mic is extremely sensitive and will pick up ambient sounds very easily. If you have a noisy room, you'll need to consider the environment as well as the source. That said, I love it and the sound it reproduces...very accurate from what I can tell (even if I hate my own voice), so I see the value in it.

I love this bundle

Was looking for a multipurpose solution and found it here. I can record voiceovers, vocals, guitars, and anything else I need quality recordings of. The Mic is excellent and the shield works like a charm.

An EXTREMELY satisfactory decision!!!

By Adam from Ridgway, CO on June 9, 2020 Music Background: Seasoned novice

I'll start by saying that this is the first microphone I've owned that doesn't fall into the "entry-level" category, meaning low-cost with low-performance/specs.
So - not surprisingly, I've had pretty mediocre results with my vocals and mic'd instruments up to now.
This mic - even in it's "next up from entry-level" range - has made a huge change in that.

Its' specs are vastly superior to anything I've had before.
It's features are fantastic (I'm particularly happy with the 2-position high-pass filter)
The build quality is comparable to much more expensive mics (the capsule alone is a work of art)
And most importantly - it gives a quality and clarity and purity of sound that no mic I've ever owned matches. Not that I'd pooh-pooh a Neumann or Royer if I had one...but to me, at least, this is a "real" microphone!
The included shock mount is a nice bonus, and the reflection shield - even though it's sE's entry-level model - makes a HUGE difference for the better. And it's clearly light-years beyond the "make-it-yourself"/home-built solutions.

I'd considered the AT2035 and the P220 - both in the same price/performance range and HUGELY popular/well reviewed...yet I would HIGHLY recommend this mic to anyone who's considering a large-diaphram condenser in this price range. Smooth and sweet sound, no nasty tonal characteristics.

Finally - I'd like to add a shout-out to my Sales Engineer Gage Massey, who was boundlessly helpful in the choice of, and implementation of, this mic. He represents all that is fantastic about Sweetwater. Customer for life here!!!

Well Worth It

By Greg from LaPorte, IN on January 3, 2018 Music Background: Musician

I got this set up as a Christmas gift and have been very happy with the quality and versatility. Not only does this work as a vocal iso shield but using it on my combo amp has proven to be quite useful as well. Also, other X1 mics fit in the included shock mount so using my X1R for vocals or on the amp is a quick switch out. The X1S is a very clean mic with plenty of versatility built in and with the filters and pads it can be used on just about everything.
