Performance Detection for creating realistic parts

The Vienna Symphonic Library team not only recorded single notes for all instruments and ensembles, but also comprehensively captured what happened in between the notes, where the real nuances of a live performance occur. When you play a Legato Performance Patch of a solo violin, algorithms that are built into the Patch check for the intervals you're playing and automatically provide you with the proper note transitions - just as a gifted musician would play them. Other built-in algorithms detect your playing speed to trigger the right articulations, or automatically detect repeated notes, and alternate samples so the orchestration doesn't sound mechanical.

Built-in RAM optimization preserves resources

Imagine you're working on an instrument in a song and you're loading various playing techniques for this instrument - say the ensemble violins. For every playing technique, several octaves of chromatically sampled notes are now living in RAM, even though you actually need only a small percentage of them to perform your violin passages. To make the best use of your resources, Vienna implemented a "Learn" button that you can click when you're finished composing with the instrument. Just start your sequencers, and Vienna Instrument flags each sample that's used. After stopping your sequencer, click "optimize" and Vienna kicks the unused samples out of RAM, retaining an average of only 3% of the samples that you originally loaded for the performance.

Supreme-quality samples and amazing ease of use

Vienna Symphonic Library is known for their painstaking, golden-eared approach to recording the superb-sounding samples that comprise their highly regarded library. It's the jaw-dropping sonic quality and the broad selection of virtual instruments that makes Vienna Symphonic Library instruments staples in top studios worldwide, but it's the company's cool software innovations and ease-of-use that'll have you singing their praises next time you're composing to a tight deadline!

Breathe life into your recordings

Vienna Instruments' Special Edition Volume 1 Plus adds a boost to the realism of your Volume 1 library. While this Special Edition PLUS collection doesn't add samples to your Volume 1 collection, it does add additional articulations that heighten the realism and variability of your orchestrations. Taking the solo violin in your Special Edition Volume 1 as an example, it already includes a number of amazingly realistic articulations. This PLUS collection supplements these with short detache, fortepiano, snap-pizzicato, col legno, half and whole tone trills, repetition performances (legato & spiccato), fast repetitions (150, 170, 190 bpm), artificial harmonics (staccato & sustain), and ponticello (staccato, sustain, tremolo). For stunning sample realism, add Vienna Instruments' Special Edition Volume 1 PLUS to your sonic arsenal.

If you have looked for good string sounds all of you life for recording, the VSL library will leave you spell bound. Not only fantastic realistic sounds but articulations that really leave you wondering if it was produced on a keyboard or a recording of actual instruments. There is a bit of a learning curve getting the program set up but if you really get stuck the guys a Sweetwater will guide you through it. As they did with me.I can't say enough about this program and will expand my VSL library as my cash becomes available. It truly is remarkable.

This library is absolutely the most authentic sounding orchestral sound bundle. The sounds will inspire you. I cannot wait to get volume 2.

Words of Advice

To begin, I will say that I have never enjoyed a purchase quite as much as the special edition bundle. It is such an excellent beginning library, and I don't think that I will need to upgrade for a considerably long time. The only thing that I didn't like was that the percussion, though accurate, was kind of limiting. There was almost no experimental percussion, only the typical band percussion. If you're looking for more expansive and interesting percussion, you may need to buy another pack, or record your own sounds. Other than that, the articulations, and the sound quality, and the automative ability, was phenomenal. Excellent purchase.

Stunning realism and great selection, but time consuming to configure properly in Logic Pro X for big projects.

The sound samples in this bundle sound phenomenal and the realism is great! It also offers a great selection of instrument categories for people who want to score for chamber, string orchestra, or certain instrumental ensembles as well. The only downside I have with the program is that it can take a good chunk of time getting the tracks assigned to their proper spots and instruments in Logic Pro X. Specifically, it can take time if you are writing for chamber (or large) orchestra and you have several techniques listed for different instruments since you have to create the same instrument track with a different technique; then, you have to name your tracks or color them to help you identify them. When you run out of 16 tracks if you have a big project, you have to then open up another multi-timbral software instrument with Logic and do the same thing again. All of of this has potential to take an incredible amount of time you can be using to dreaming up a masterpiece! With Sibelius though, it automatically plays back the technique if you enter it correctly in Sibelius; and, the configuration isn't so bad since you only have to make sure the instrument is right and the track is right. Overall, this a virtual instrument library that offers stunning realism and variety that sounds like the real thing; but, it has potential to be a pain to configure properly in Logic Pro X.

Vienna Symphonic Library Special Edition Volume I Bundle

Wonderful sounds. Sophisticated program. The program designer(s) must work on a more user friendly installation process. The program is advertised to be compatible with Sibelius. Yet, neither the IT people of Sweetwater, Ilio nor Sibelius had ready at hand answers to the difficulties I encountered. Each had to research various problems.
