Two Indispensable Virtual Preamps

The Slate Digital Virtual Preamp Collection (VPC) stocks your sonic palette with meticulous models (the FG-73 and FG-76) of two of the most coveted classic mic pres ever made. From subtle coloration to euphonic saturation to gnarly distortion, Slate has captured every aspect of these preamp circuits. Originally designed for use with the Digital VMS Virtual Microphone System, the Virtual Preamp Collection works beautifully with any clean preamp. Sweetwater engineers have found that Slate Digital's VPC adds authentic analog preamp vibe to any track, or even a complete mix.

Slate Digital Virtual Preamp Collection at a Glance:
  • The FG-73 emulates a classic English preamp
  • The FG-76 delivers vintage preamp sound
  • The Virtual Drive allows proper gain staging
The FG-73 emulates a classic English preamp

The celebrity entry in the Slate Digital's Virtual Preamp Collection is the FG-73, which is modeled on the legendary solid-state English console preamp module that's all over your favorite recordings. From its RAF blue-gray steel chassis and wooden end cheeks to its punchy, in-your-face sound, the FG-73 nails it. You'll be reaching for the FG-73 constantly.

The FG-76 delivers vintage preamp sound

The Slate Digital Virtual Preamp Collection also gives you the FG-76 module, modeled after a much-loved vintage tube preamp used on many classic records. The FG-76 rocks a warm, fat, colorful sound that will make your tracks and mixes come alive. The low end saturates in a very musical, sweet way, so it's ideal for pumping up bass and kick drum. You'll be using this one a lot, too.

The Virtual Drive allows proper gain staging

Slate designed both VPC preamp modules with a Virtual Drive. Twist this knob to simulate increasing the amp input gain, while automatically compensating via an internal output trim. Virtual Drive makes perfecting your gain staging a simple, one-knob operation. For milder coloration, keep the Virtual Drive knob left of center. If you're after more saturation or full-bore distortion, hang right. Crank it fully clockwise, and hold on for a wild ride!

Slate Digital Virtual Preamp Collection Features:

Great Virtual Preamp

I bought this some time ago. I don't have the luxury of having a great studio with outboard gear, at the moment. So I have to rely on plugins. It's hard to explain the VPC. But what I can say is I now use it in every mix. I actually use it more when I go to record. Vocals, Guitars, you name it...Sound so much better. It's not a HUGE difference in tone, but there is something about them. It really is like plugging into analog equipment. It adds character. I love paring these with the VCC and VTM. Highly recommended :)

Slate has done it again!

Seems as though these plugins are getting extremely close to the analog sound and it's so cool. These Slate preamps add something really subtle, but very game changing in my audio tracks. I have seen many big time studios with the real preamps in their racks and now I know why. I saw John Fogerty's studio once and he has the real Telefunken 76 there that he uses when he records, even though he has an awesome API console, he still uses the 76 for the tone and sounds it adds. Being able to use these in your own tracks is just mind blowing. These things cost thousands for the real deal and most of us would never be able to find them or afford them these days. Slate has given us something extremely useful. They make my tracks come alive with that Analog sound! Buy them - worth every dollar! The CPU usage isn't too bad. You see, it's not really the modules that use the CPU, it' the Mix Rack that uses it. I have inserted the mix rack with these modules on 20 audio tracks in my DAW and have not seen any glitches. I have a computer that's about 8 years old, so that should tell you something. Slate has done it again!

Sweetwater Advice

Tyler Berggren

Even with access to a broad assortment of outboard preamps in my studio, I often record record straight through clean interface preamps. These tracks sound all right, but they could use a bit of analog color. VPC is the perfect solution! I can toss it on as many tracks as I need, gain stage for a bit of harmonic bloom, and everything just seems to fall into place in the mix.
