Two Channels to Go!

Borrowing the same award-winning microphone preamplifiers found on their 744T digital portable interface, the Sound Devices USBPre 2 provides one of the highest quality portable interfaces available for both Mac and Windows computers. The USBPre 2 is equipped with a pair of fully discrete, transistor-based XLR inputs and impressively lucid 24-bit converters that are capable of up to 192kHz sample rates. Additional inputs for line-level sources and consumer audio electronics, as well as S/PDIF optical Toslink digital devices are also available. A 23-segment, multicolor LED meter provides you with the essential feedback you need to keep an eye on your levels, and are an invaluable asset when using the USBPre 2 as a standalone preamp and A-to-D converter.

Sound Devices USBPre 2 Microphone Interface Features at a Glance:
  • Extended bandwidth, low-noise microphone preamplifiers with 48 V phantom, limiters, highpass filters, and 15dB pad
  • Dynamic range greater than 114dB (in 24-bit operation)
  • Flat 10Hz to 40kHz (@96kHz SR) audio bandwidth with very low distortion
  • Each input individually selectable between microphone, line, and aux level signals (both channels selected simultaneously for S/PDIF connections)
  • Precision, 23-segment, multicolor LED peak/VU meter, selectable between input and output sources
  • High-output headphone amplifier can drive a wide range of headphones
  • Balanced outputs on XLR connectors with dedicated level control can be used to drive line- or mic-level inputs
  • Mix control enables zero-delay monitoring of source audio, computer audio, or a mix of both source and computer audio for multitrack recording or computer telephony
  • Phono (RCA) jacks connect Aux Output to external loudspeakers or preamplifiers
  • Bus powering via USB for convenient, single-cable connection to the computer
  • In Stand-Alone mode the USBPre 2 operates as a microphone preamplifier and analog-to-digital converter

The USBpre 2 is the "secret agent" of audio interfaces. Everything others have said in the reviews is true, about the military spec build quality, the flexibility, metering, powerful headphone amp and quiet, truthful preamps. And the AD/DA conversion is excellent. I am forever on a quest for something better, but for the kind of radio production work that we do, auditioning music and recording voice tracks, it's perfect. I especially like not having to struggle with software to make simple adjustments -- everything has a button or a knob.

We've been using the USBpre 2 ever since it came out, in our main studio but sometimes on the road interfacing to a concert stage or some other field situation. In our studio B we monitor on a Benchmark D/A and it sounds noticeably more silky and sumptuous (think of the sound of "Raising Sand"), but the Sound Devices sounds just as good, just more clinical. Which is exactly what we need for making EQ and compression decisions while editing voice tracks or mixing complex documentaries. This honest clarity goes goes back to Sound Devices' DNA in field recording, mainly dialog. We also have a SD702 and they sound the same.

When a recording calls for something with a bit more vibe, we patch a Manley Core into the line in, and for expanded metering, we patch the optical out into a TC Electronic Clarity M meter.

Awesome Gear! USBPre2

Love the sound stability at all input levels.

Rugged and quiet

The USBPre2 is an incredible interface for both field and home use. It is built extremely well, and will last for many years. I use it mainly for creating my own high resolution audio files. It is very quiet through both the mic and line inputs. I have gear that does not meet my expectations, but this little interface surpassed all of them. If all you need is a two channel USB interface, then this is the perfect unit. I absolutely love it. I am so happy that I chose the USBPRE2. I really like the compact design. The metering is accurate and easy to see. It works great as a stand alone unit too. I highly recommend this product.

Interface/Problem Solver

I've been using the USBPre2 for about five years now. It's built like a tank. It does it's job supremely well, and the multitude of I/O options make it an excellent problem solver. Several times while recording live events, working with other people's equipment this little box has saved the day.The client failed to provide the right cables/connections for their own event? No problem. Wasn't sure what I might need to interface with on site? No problem. They decided the room I was working should have live speakers half way through the job? No problem. There are so many I/O options here you can usually work it out just by keeping one of these on hand. And I have... repeatedly. Oh and it's an excellent interface. Great preamps, lots of headroom. The only thing about the USBPre2 that has never made sense to me is the combination of utility, quality and price. Years down the road, and I feel like I should have had to pay more for all this.

Meticulously Phenomenal

Nothing compares! I went through a slew of different mic preamps trying to get decent clean gain over the years (I'm super fond of the Sure SM7b and the RE 20 both of which are very low in output level). Everything stopped when I encountered the Sound Devices pre-amps. They have a lot of gain and are not only clean but also precise. There is no added coloration. Their equipment is built to beyond-military grade standards and I have never had an issue with anything from them. I work in radio and have a budget of zero but these are worth every penny of the price.

The Sound Devices USBPre 2 gives you the best quality from outside in and from bottom to top. I've had very high-end customers compare this unit to convertors four times the price! No hype, no problems.
