Extremely Portable Acoustic-electric Bass

The bass you can travel with! The Kala U-Bass sets a new sonic standard for "travel-sized" instruments. It's sized to fit into the overhead compartment of an airplane, yet's it's packed with thick, rich acoustic bass tone. In fact, the fretless U-Bass's tone comes startlingly close to that of traditional double bass - something that anyone used to lugging around an upright will love. And since this little uke-style instrument uses traditional bass tuning, there's virtually no learning curve if your used to a standard bass guitar.

Special U-Bass Strings provide deep, warm, and rich acoustic bass tone

The secret behind the big sound of the Kala U-Bass is almost as cool as its small, ultra-portable format. It comes from the combination of the right tonewoods and Kala's unique polyurethane strings. These lightweight, large-diameter string provide plenty of low frequency umph, which resonates with a deep, rich, and wooden quality that's both reminiscent of the coveted upright sound and colored with a uniquely musical U-Bass quality all of its own.

The right tonewoods bring out this U-Bass's expressive and full-bodied sound

As an acoustic instrument, another major factor in the U-Bass's tone is the selection of tonewoods Kala chose. A mahogany body, complemented by a mahogany neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and a rosewood bridge add to the vibrance of this U-Bass, giving it a warm and slightly dark (but not muddy) fundamental tone. On top of that, they gave this U-Bass a solid spruce top, which adds a touch of extra midrange definition to your tone.

Custom Kala electronics with active EQ make this U-Bass a real live performer

Introduced on the 2013 edition of the U-Bass, Kala's custom electronics give this U-Bass a vibrant and realistic sound when you play plugged in. An active equalizer lets you tweak your tone, effortlessly meeting the needs of even the most demanding venues. What's more, Kala even equipped this U-Bass with an onboard tuner - an essential part of any musicians live kit.

Great Bass!

Great bass for messing around on the couch or on the porch. You could even gig with it. Plays and sounds great. I have the fretless version and it has a standup type sound, which I love. However, you're definitely going to need an amp if you want to play with anyone, even acoustic. But I find that to be the case for most acoustic basses. I should also say that the Sweetwater customer service was excellent as well.

Killer sound from this little bass

This thing has a shocking amount of bottom. It will take a bit of practice to get used to the small scale and rubber strings, but it plays really well. The addition of the tone controls and built-in tuner are a welcome improvement. I was shocked at how loud it can get unplugged. You wouldn't want to play with others without an amp, but it's totally fine for plucking away on the couch or office.

Fretless uBass

Love the Kala UBass. Plays awesome. Friends are blown away by the size and the rich sound that it produces when plugged in. Wish the case was a bit more beaffy. Looking for a better case that a friend of mine got w his. I would be worried to travel w the soft case that I received w mine. Read the product reviews and product descriptions but most or all just mentioned travel gig bag. No big discription on weather it was a full soft case or semi hard case. Other than that really enjoy playing it. Been having so much fun with it, I haven't really played my other bass guitars in a while since I've gotten it. Thanks for carrying the Kala brand.

Cool Bass

Neat little bass ! Lots of fun to Jam with ...It has great low and top end for such a small instrument .. You definitely need the built in tuner because the strings stretch so much .... Its a fun travel bass ..Get yourself a little 10-15 watt amp and go at it !
