Extremely Portable Acoustic Bass

The Kala U-Bass sets a new sonic standard for "travel-sized" instruments. This little puppy is tuned in traditional bass tuning, it's sized to fit into the overhead compartment of an airplane, yet it's packed with thick, rich acoustic bass tone. Many bass fanatics, in fact, feel that the U-Bass offers tones extremely close to the sound of an upright bass. So, what's the secret behind this portable, affordable bass gem's rich sound? We'd wager it's the gorgeous solid mahogany body, complemented by a solid mahogany neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and a rosewood bridge - these are well-respected, time-proven tonewoods.

Of course, the magic in the U-Bass is also in the details. Kala paid attention to the whole instrument, giving it a reliable set of custom Hipshot tuners plus an amazing-sounding Shadow pickup system for when you want to plug in and play.

Veterans of the electric bass guitar will love the Kala U-Bass's great sound, portability, and jam-ready design. This is also the perfect instrument for anyone accompanying an acoustic guitarist on the open mic or coffeehouse circuit. Throw in the included custom hard-foam case, and the Kala U-Bass is an absolute steal!

Love the sound!

First of all Sweetwater is an excellent company to do business with by Internet. Quick and thorough answers to any questions. Delivery was great too. The Uke-bass is so much fun. I've always wanted to play acoustic bass. This ukulele has a great sound and the size is perfect. Bluegrass, blues here I come.
Music background: Beginner bass/intermediate uke player

Few glitches!

First off, I just love this instrument!! But there were a few issues. One is that there is only a very minimalist manual online and I found my uke did not work. The direction of the 2 battery set was the issue, not obvious or intuitive, and there were multiple combinations that did not work. It was not the fault of the instrument. Secondly, it then did not work because it won't play while the tuner is on. How was I supposed to know this? Not in the manual. I was getting ready to send it back when a friend came over--had the same problem, and almost sent hers back, but figured it out, and saved me from that mistake. Ok problems solved.. Sounds great, fun to play, and was just a great idea to get one.
Music background: Piano, clarinet, ukulele, and now U Bass.

Sweetwater Advice

Ty Heimann

I had been skeptical of a “ukulele bass," but the first time I plugged the Kala U-Bass into my amp, I realized that this little instrument is for real! Using the on-board active EQ, I am able to easily dial in the big sound of an upright bass - plus, it is extremely fun to play!

Kala U-Bass

The U-Bass is a well-designed, gig-worthy instrument, if somewhat of a novelty item. The build is solid, the components are topnotch, and it serves up sounds you can use in a variety of settings. ...
