With its rich and mellow mahogany back and sides, vibrant solid spruce top, and proprietary polyurethane, the Hutch Hutchinson U-Bass gives you an amazing upright bass sound. There's a custom Shadow electronics system (complete with an active EQ and tuner) to provide you with full and dynamic sound. What's more, a unique slotted soundhole design all but eliminates the threat of acoustic feedback, making the Kala Hutch Hutchinson U-Bass a real performer onstage.

Special U-Bass strings provide deep, warm, and rich acoustic bass tone

The secret behind the big sound of the Kala Hutch Hutchinson U-Bass is almost as cool as its small, ultra-portable format. It comes from the combination of the right tonewoods and Kala's unique polyurethane strings. These lightweight, large-diameter strings provide plenty of low-frequency umph, which resonates with a deep, rich, and wooden quality that's both reminiscent of the coveted upright sound and colored with a uniquely musical U-Bass quality all of its own.

Custom Shadow electronics system delivers top-quality sound onstage

When Hutch Hutchinson picks up his Kala U-Bass, he needs the biggest, richest, and fullest acoustic bass sound possible. That's why Kala outfitted this special U-Bass model with custom-designed Shadow electronics. Not only does this pickup system give you the expressive dynamics and powerful full-range sound you need, it also comes with useful extras such as an active EQ for sound shaping and an onboard tuner that lets you travel even lighter with your Hutch Hutchinson U-Bass.

The right tonewoods bring out this U-Bass's expressive and full-bodied sound

As an acoustic instrument, another major factor in the Hutch Hutchinson U-Bass's tone is the selection of tonewoods Kala chose. A mahogany body, complemented by a mahogany neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and a rosewood bridge add to the vibrance of this U-Bass, giving it a warm and slightly dark (but not muddy) fundamental tone. On top of that, they gave this Hutch Hutchinson U-Bass a solid spruce top, which adds a touch of extra midrange definition to your tone.

Great Ball Tone

Mine is on the way back to you to have the strap button/input jack repaired. It would not remain tight which would eventually cause a short in the wiring. I love the bass and will use it professionally however I hope this problem can be remedied otherwise I will have to pay for the jack to be moved to another position. Of course I'm sure that would void any warranty. Sorry but that is a design flaw in this instrument. Other than that it's fantastic.

Simple, effective, awesome !

It's very hard to write a review on something that does exactly what it is supposed to do. The Hutch model U-Bass is well made and finished, sounds great and does a brilliant job at reducing feedback when amped, even at some pretty high volumes. When played acoustically the volume is a little less than a standard U-Bass and would never cut it as a solo instrument. Tone wise it is marginally different to its sister U-Bass that I have, being a little richer and a tad more solid especially in the lower registers, but that could be as much to do with the Spruce top compared to the Mahogany on the other model. As I said in the first line, it does exactly what it is advertised to do and it does it better than a traditional U-Bass with a feedback buster plugged in to the sound hole and looks a darn site prettier to boot ! Why 4.5 and not five ? Not for the instrument which is a true five, the gig bag it came with was a little less than perfect with some loose stitching and in my opinion a little on the ugly side !

I was looking for a fat thump for a few songs in a few bands but now I'm using it for dub, hiphop, R&B, and roots rock! Once you get used to the string action it's very rewarding, and an audience favorite.

Hutch Hutchinson Kala Ubass

I am a fan of the Ubass - I own a mahogany fretless - and I've always liked the look of the HH Ubass. I wanted a fretted Ubass so bought the HH model. My only complaints are that 1. the pickup isn't as "full" as that in my older fretless and 2. Kala changed the peghead logo to a plain brown toad with plain brown Kala lettering. Not a big deal, but not what I was expecting (or looking for). I just couldn't get past these two issues so I sent it back. It's still a great bass for someone, and the folks at Sweetwater are the best to work with. I have a really picky ear or I probably would have kept it.
