Wow, the Lauten Audio Torch ST-221 mics are incredible! Small diaphram microphones often get overlooked in the studio, but I think the Torch is going to change that. Have both tubes and transformers give the Torch a wonderfully rich, full yet detailed sound. Combined with fantastic build techniques and superior design, the the Torch is a must-have. Every studio or recording engineer should have a pair of these in his arsenal!
I recently used the Lauten Audio Torch ST-221 on a drum tracking session, and I was incredibly impressed. These mics have a great balance to them. On one hand, they were able to capture and highlight the nuances of detailed cymbal work, while also working as the "glue" which makes the drumset sound like one instrument. In fact, I probably could have used these with a kick drum mic and I would have had the drum sound done right then and there!
Incredible detail, while avoiding the cold sterility that is common with such highly accurate mics. Furthermore, the package as a whole is stunning. If you like getting your money's worth, you will be quite happy when you see how nicely packaged these mics are. The briefcase is great, the shockmounts and stereo bar are fantastic and highly functional, and you even get extra omni capsules. Truly a fantastic deal!
Not Your Ordinary SDC
When searching for a pair of SDC's I read reviews until my eyes were blurry. Then I called Mike Conyers at Sweetwater. Mike confirmed some of my conclusions and explained his reasons for recommending the ST-221 stereo pair. He was right on! These mics deliver. They, in fact, do offer clean fast transient response and they have a full bottom end which I feel gives the sound a 'bigger' sonic picture than many SDC's. I have used them to record a live Bluegrass band, electric guitar and even some male and female vocal (yes, I know about the preference for LDC's). As I said earlier, These Mics Deliver.
Very nice tone. Great bottom end response. I've recorded piano, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and banjo. They sounded particularly nice on the mandolin and banjo. Taming the brightness of those instruments.
Looking forward to using these on drums.
