A No-Nonsense, Professional Bass with Unmistakable Gretsch Vibe

Gretsch has been building unique guitars, basses and even amps going way back to the mid-1950s, all with an unmistakable vibe that carried through all the company's product line. Many of the '50s and '60s designs have become classics and are now being built again for today's players to rediscover. The Thunder Jet is a new, no-nonsense design that combines all the best features of those vintage Gretsches with some modern enhancements. It features a heavily chambered, mahogany semi-hollowbody design with dual TV Jones ThunderTron pickups, a laminated arched maple top and a one-piece mahogany neck, as well as the totally retro G-Cutout tailpiece and neo-classical thumbnail inlays. Naturally, it has all the vibe you'd expect from a Gretsch!

Gretsch Thunder Jet Bass Features at a Glance:
  • Heavily chambered, semi-hollowbody mahogany body with laminated maple top
  • Two TV Jones ThunderTron bass pickups
  • One-piece mahogany neck with bound ebony fingerboard and "thumbnail" inlays
  • Space Control bridge and G-Cutout tailpiece
  • Includes plush-lined deluxe hardshell case

Heavily chambered, semi-hollowbody mahogany body with laminated maple top
The Gretsch Thunder Jet Bass is based on the classic G6128 Duo Jet body design. It features a heavily chambered, semi-hollowbody design made from select mahogany with an arched, laminated maple top. This design gives you all the tonal benefits of the mahogany and maple design, but without the extra weight you might expect. Perfect for bass players looking for a stage-ready bass with Gretsch vibe and plenty of versatility for any style of music.

Two TV Jones ThunderTron bass pickups
TV Jones pickups accurately reproduce the distinctive look and sound of the very best classic Gretsch pickups. The Thunder Bass is shipped fully loaded with a pair of TV Jones ThunderTron bass pickups, a three-position toggle switch, two volume controls (one for the bridge pickup and the other for the neck pickup) plus a master volume and master tone.

One-piece mahogany neck with bound ebony fingerboard and "thumbnail" inlays
In true Gretsch fashion, the Thunder Bass comes standard with a solid, one-piece mahogany neck with a fully bound rosewood fingerboard, perfectly complemented by the neo-classical "thumbnail" position inlays and 22 medium jumbo frets.
Space Control bridge, "G" arrow knobs and G-Cutout tailpiece
It wouldn't be a Gretsch without those little extra touches you've come to expect. These include the patented Space Control bridge on an ebony base along with the totally cool, "G" arrow knobs and chrome G-Cutout tailpiece. Up on stage you're not only making music, you're also making a fashion statement. Also guaranteed to turn heads in the studio.

Includes plush-lined deluxe hardshell case
The original Gretsch instruments came without a case. But today's Thunder Jet Bass comes standard with a deluxe, plush-lined hardshell case for maximum protection of your investment between gigs.

My Favorite Bass

It is the greatest bass I have ever played the latest addition to my Bass stable. I own 8 total and I must say this Bass sounds great, easy to play, not too heavy, and looks wonderful. It is short scale but sounds like it's long scale. Don't buy short scale strings though, it uses long scale stings because of the bridge type. It has three volume controls, one main and one for each pickup. I roll the main volume just a little bit which produces that Gretsch iconic sound. I don't have any complaints. I did change the strings to T-I PowerBass Strings, which I think sound really good. Buy one, you won't regret it and you most likely will not see another one our there.
Music background: Play bass in local band and for my church.

Gretsch Thunder Jet (black)

I would like to thank you Mr. Moore for the excellent service you provided. I am very happy I purchased from you guys. Thanks alot!

Great product!!!

Absolutely love this bass, with one exception. You'll need to change out the strings. They are tinny and buzz too much. I put on some LaBella Deep Talkin Bass Hofner Flat Wound and it ROCKS!!!

Amazing Gretsch

Great sound, perfect weight, fast neck, good knob ergonomics, what's not to like? Oh, yeah, incredibly fast delivery. The only negative, a bit pricey.

Oh dear Fender

5 stars for Sweetwater, 1 star for Fender. First impressions were great but closer inspection revealed some serious flaws. Fender used long scale strings on this short scale bass and the 105 E string was wrapped on the small tuning post. This put an S bend in the string between the nut and post and great stress on everything. When I contacted Fender about this problem they assured me this was normal and the visual appearance of the bend would not affect anything!! No offer to send the correct string set to fix the problem just assurances that all was fine. Sweetwater stepped up and are sending the correct strings. Lesson learned - Fender customer support is worthless. The next problem was the TV Jones pickups which are mounted with wood screws. The neck pickup was loose and I could not adjust it high enough on one side. After removing it I discovered the pocket had been cut too deep and the foam rubber was not compressing under the pickup. I added more foam to correct this but why do I need to fix a new $2000 bass? TV Jones promised to respond to my inquiry about retrofitting with English mounts, screws with springs and bezels but after two weeks I am still waiting. Bottom line, this is likely my first and last Fender purchase. I have basses half this price that were perfect out of the box.

Sweetwater Advice

Nate Edwards

This is one of those "sleeper" basses that too few people know about. The short scale length and chambered body make it more comfortable than any other bass I've played, and lend it an incredible vintage thump. What a cool bass, and what a signature tone. You will not go unnoticed with this!

Carson McClain

If you are truly ready to notch things up and add that rockabilly, psychobilly, surf rock, rat rod, acid country sound to the band, get the Thunder Jet. If you've been dying to get out from behind your upright bass and show your guitar player who is the baddest bassist around, get the Thunder Jet! This has to be my favorite bass in our entire selection. It's sexy, dark, and mean. The perfect compliment to this is an Ampeg SVT Classic. Gretsch dominates this world of music I listed above. It always has and always will. Do your band and yourself a favor and pick up this bass!
