Best option for that spring sound!
In my studio I have two great digital boxes, a Bricasti M7 and a Lexicon MX400XL, and a large selection of the familiar plugs. However, if you want that real spring reverb shimmer, boing, and occasional BOOM, the best option is a real spring.
I recently purchased the Radial TankDriver and a MOD tank to go with it. I have it mounted in a Radial Powerhouse, so the rear Omniport connects cleanly to the tank without a tangle of cables on the front of the rack. This setup really surpassed all of my expectations! As an insert in PT, true spring reverb sound is easy and quick - it really is a great bit of kit. The shimmer and boom controls really work well to dial in the sound you want, and drive lets you compensate for impedance variations between different tanks.
A couple things really surprised me. First, this setup is silent when not in use. No hiss, no hum. no extraneous noise that will cause problems or necessitate extra editing. Second, and of course YMMV depending on your setup, but the sound you get is extremely consistent and repeatable from take to take. I put the TankDriver on an aux buss and sent a clean electric guitar track to it. I then bounced it twice to two separate audio tracks. When I phase swapped one of the tracks, there was almost complete cancellation. I was blown away!
A great unit, and highly recommended.
