That Early-'70s Drum Sound

Evans Hydraulic series drumheads deliver deep, fat impact, without overhang. It's the classic drum sound of early-1970s rock. Constructed of two plies of thin film, Hydraulic heads are known for their ease of tuning, which makes them an ideal choice for problematic drums or novice drummers seeking instant sonic gratification. Outfit your kit with Evans Hydraulic heads, and your drums will deliver the short sustain, punchy attack, and pronounced bottom end that launched a thousand hit records.

Like playing an old friend

I have played almost nothing but Evans heads for the last 25 years. A long time ago, I also used the hydraulic heads, but somewhere along the way, my tastes changed, and I went to another series of Evans heads for a more open sound. Looking through the new gear on the Sweetwater site a couple of weeks ago, I saw the red hydraulics, and just on a whim, I ordered one for my 12 inch tom and my 16 inch floor tom. I thought they would look cool with my chrome finish drums....and they do! When I put them on, they tuned up very quickly and I was immediately taken back to the days when I used to play the hydraulics....and man, there was "that sound" again. It really was like taking a walk down memory lane. I felt like I had met a long lost friend all over again. These heads are really good for the style of music my band is playing: Nice and fat, but with muted overtones. Where this head really shines for me is when I mic them.... and also run them through my drum monitor (as well as the house system of course) Wow, talk about adding some punch to your kit. If you have the luxury of a decent drum monitor, and mic your kit, these puppies are just killer for fat toms. (For my kick I use an Evans EMAD, which also has an incredible amount of fat punch to it, and the Evans Genera dry snare head) One of these days, I may go back to the more open sounding heads again, but for the moment, I'm really enjoying getting reacquainted with an old friend.
