Robert Cray Update

After nine months still one best purchases I've ever made. The RC is dollar for dollar one of the best Fender values. The neck radius and profile is nothing short of perfection. As I mentioned in my previous rating; prior to purchasing I had concerns about the neck shape/profile being too big and not being able to find one in a store to try out prior to ordering. I have what I would term average length fingers for a guitarist and IMHO this neck was made for my hands. Smooth, great tone, beautiful in the 3 color sunburst and I will likely order the other color as I finally got to see someone with it and beautiful as well. MIM??? Might as well be in USA as it is top quality for a ton less money

VERY PLEASED

After having some discussions with Sales Rep; Brent Leuthold over a couple of guitar choices I had been thinking about, I switched gears and decided I wanted a Robert Cray Strat. I chose the MIM based on what I had read about them. My biggest concerns were the size of the neck comments; both pro and con saying too big or a great neck. I own an Eric Johnson Strat which was my first Strat I ever owned. When I expressed the neck size concern with Brent he helped to ease my worries telling me that if I were happy with my Johnson Strat, I would likely be pleased with the Cray. Lo and behold, upon arrival, I found Brent to be absolutely right. To the credit of the other 4 reviewers before me, they too were right in stating the RC neck is a very sweet and comfortable neck, smooth play up and down the neck. The guitar set up was very comfortable, though a smidge higher than my other Strat setups, but I couldn't be more pleased except unless it came with a hard case. The finish on the RC was perfect, no flaws that I could find. There have been comments on the tuners and the volume/tone knobs being plastic. I can deal with that and change if need be. But for now, it's a definite "recommend" for me. I may update later should be there a need. Lastly, it came in a nice padded Fender bag, then in Fender shipping box which was then put inside a Sweetwater box, well packed for shipping. Thank you Brent and Sweetwater staff who did the 55 point eval and packing.

update

After 2 years, the Cray strat is still my favorite(strat). Playing through a DRRI now, and I love it. Other players ask if it is strung with 9s, but Earnie Ball 10s are always on it.

The perfect hardtail strat

I've been playing for 38 years and have owned many strats including 5 ECs...I like to buy , trade and sell. But this Mexican Robert Cray has no flaws , the setup was perfect, and it sounds great through my Fender Blues Junior. The neck pocket is the best I've ever seen. The tuning keys work great...it really stays in tune. The wood on the neck is plain and I believe they dyed the fretboard darker, but it is functional and looks great. Its a keeper. The service was excellent too...they but on Earnie Ball .010s for me at no charge.

FENDER ROBERT CRAY STRAT

First of all, I would like to say that Sweetwater is the finest on-line music retailer in the US, hands down--their customer service is virtually second to none!! On to the R Cray Strat--The first thing that impressed me is how well put together it is--The sunburst finish is perfect, as is the neck pocket, tuners, bridge, pickup layout and pickguard fit--I would describe the sound as a vintage 60's strat sound with more muscle and girth, owing in part to the bigger C shaped neck and jumbo frets--The radius, at 9.5", is very bend-friendly, unlike a lot of vintage inspired strats--The hardtail bridge is an uncommon feature on most strats, but the tonal difference, as opposed to a tremelo bridge, is considerable--It sounds punchier, more stable, in general, bigger--I have looked for a strat with these features for quite a while, and cannot recommend this one enough--It can easily cover virtually any kind of music, whether R and B, fusion, contemporary, blues, and the more modern genres of jazz music-- I played one of these around 4 years ago in southern california and wasn't able to purchase it then, but the memory of the R Cray stayed with me--When I saw it in the Sweetwater catalog, along with photos of the actual guitar, I knew I had to have it-- Great work, Fender!! On a final note, it is made in Fender's Ensenada, Mexico facility, thereby making the cost very reasonable--And the Ensenada Fender's just keep getting better and better--Go and buy one!!!
