In addition to its nitrocellulose-lacquer-finished 2-piece alder body, this '63 Heavy Relic Strat captures many other idiosyncrasies of the 1963 Stratocaster's tonewoods in perfect detail. One of the most remarkable of these is its rounded dark rosewood laminate Fretboard shaped to the radius of the '63 Heavy Relic Strat's large C-shaped maple neck.
In fact, Fender had just moved away from the "slab" style of fingerboards in 1962, because they had a tendency to split from the neck due to humidity changes. The rounded laminate method minimized the differences in the way the two woods contracted, but it was far more costly, as the single piece of rosewood had to be hand contoured to perfectly fit the neck. By painstakingly recreating this process the Fender Custom Shop ensured that the '63 Heavy Relic Strat would give you the same feel and sound as an original 1963 Stratocaster.Aged Vintage White over 3-color Sunburst finish captures a piece of Fender History
You've probably noticed that there's a bit of Sunburst peeking through some parts of this Fender Custom Shop '63 Heavy Relic Strat's finish. That's because this '63 Heavy Relic Strat faithfully re-creates the worn-through 2-tone phenomenon that some of the few heavily used 1963 Stratocasters still around display today.
So, what's the story with this finish? Actually, back in 1963, Fender's 3-color Sunburst was so popular that they initially produced all of their Stratocasters in that color. It was only after Fender would receive an order for a Strat in another color that they'd paint over the thin 3-color Sunburst finish. Jimi Hendrix actually owned and played a white 1963 Fender Stratocaster himself, and you can bet that if he was still around today, his guitar would look a lot like this '63 Heavy Relic Strat.Fender Custom Shop '60s Stratocaster pickups capture the sound of an electric-guitar era
