    Great Utility Unit

This is a fantastic tool for 2 things:

    1. Supplemental electronic or percussion sounds for an existing acoustic kit.

    2. Recording drum ideas and beats into VSTs via midi out.

If you're using it for a total drum kit solution you're going to have a bad time. It's not meant for that and will be super disappointing.

If you use the internal sounds you'll probably find that it's limited and a bit vanilla. After loading user samples it becomes a complete monster though, only limited by the quality of files you put on it and your skill at using them.

I did find that loading user samples onto this unit is easier than most drum pads which was a pleasant change from some of the much more expensive Yamaha gear that I've used.

I paid the $99.00 sale price for this guy and I'm seriously considering purchasing another. At that price point there really isn't much to lose.

    Great Addition to My Kit

I was looking for an addition to my kit that could handle several percussion sounds (e.g. claves, woodblock, chimes, etc.). Wow! This Alesis SamplePad was exactly the answer! It provided several of the sounds I wanted straight out of the box, and adding new sounds using the memory card was super-easy. Thanks for providing the exact product I needed, and at a great price!

Alesis SamplePad - gets job done

I had a rough start with samplers. Not sure why most are so complicated to get working - just load ANY sound on a memory location and trigger by a pad. Not so easy... they are very particular about file format. The good thing is this Alesis unit is as simple as I've seen and at $199 it is 1/4 the price of a new Roland SPD-SX. This unit has ZERO features but gets the job done at the lowest pricepoint for a drumstick pad trigger device if you want to liven up your stage performances. The operating system looks like it came from Akai as it look very similar to their fingerpad MPX8 (even cheaper at $99 but comes w/ a kit editor unlike the Alesis unit). I'm hooked on using samples and think this was a good place to start. Sweetwater cust service is also the best I've ever had (added a star for that).

    Alesis Sample Pad

Overall I'm quite happy with the sample pad. I like the internal sounds. Though a bit cheesy, they enable you to play with the sound of a drum machine, which can be a nice effect, specially when playing live. The only problem I encountered with it was loading my own samples (which was the reason I got it) the sample pad does not accept Wav files made in pro tools. After a couple of frustrating hours, I figured out you need a file conversion program such as Stretch (for Mac, free download). I converted my (pro tools ) Wavs into Wavs again and it worked fine. Looking online I see a number of people have had this problem.

    Very Limited Use

This pad is fine if you just want to add some sounds to a kit or hammer some single notes. The trouble starts when you try to generate two sounds at the same time. Alesis support calls the phenomenon "crosstalk rejection." What it means is that this device cancels one of the two simultaneously hit sounds about 90% of the time (in my humble experience). Not what I would call acceptable performance for a product that has four pads and a trigger.
