The Perfect Way to Get Into Eurorack Synthesis

The Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox delivers the full power of the Lifeforms SV-1 Synthesizer Eurorack module in a fully self-contained desktop model. This modular synth includes all of the basic elements you need: oscillators, modulation options, filtering, and essential signal-routing tools. Using the included Nazca braided 3.5mm Eurorack patch cables and more than 55 patch points, you can route control voltage, gate, and even MIDI in countless fun and creative ways. Whether you're getting into Eurorack synthesis for the first time or want another synth that will play with the rig you already have, the Lifeforms SV-1 Synthesizer is just what you need.

Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 Blackbox Eurorack Synthesizer at a Glance:
  • Stack up waveforms with two sweet oscillators
  • Shape your sound with a 3-way filter section
  • Take control with extensive MIDI to CV options
Stack up waveforms with two sweet oscillators

No matter how simple the Lifeforms SV-1's oscillator sections may look, once you start patching them together, you'll be amazed by the sonic range they deliver. Start building your sound from sine, triangle, sawtooth, square, and even Pittsburgh Modular's own blade waveforms. You'll find options for accessing rigging FM, thunderous sub-oscillator rumbles, and everything in between. Noise and sample-and-hold circuits are just a patch point away, and a clock-syncable digital LFO adds even more possibilities to your sound creation.

Shape your sound with a 3-way filter section

You can't have subtractive synthesis without a worthy filter section, and the Lifeforms SV-1 delivers. This big, fat, and vibrant filter includes discrete outputs for highpass, lowpass, and bandpass processing. There's plenty of resonance on tap, with ample headroom for harmonic content across the spectrum. In addition to controlling the base cutoff frequency, this filter section includes a CV adjustment control, which can both attenuate and even invert the modulation signal coming from the LFO, the ADSR envelope, or an external source.

Take control with extensive MIDI to CV options

There's a lot of cool electronic music gear out there that's fun to play with but hard to incorporate into a bigger system. At Sweetwater, we're constantly helping our customers put together complex rigs that span multiple manufacturers, which is why we're so pleased with the Lifeforms SV-1's extensive MIDI implementation. Not only can you play the SV-1 using MIDI (it comes with a special MIDI cable), but basic CV and gate are only the beginning. Dedicated outputs for velocity and CCs allow the SV-1 to react dynamically to your keyboard or sequencer, and onboard glide control is a wonderful bonus.

Amazing Little Wonderbox!!!

I've been playing with synths for about ten years, and this is my first "modular" synth. I've noticed a lot of people complaining about the pitch-tracking on this, and I'm not sure, but I think maybe these people aren't used to dealing with voltage-controlled analog stuff? Not trying to cast aspersions but if you aren't used to that, you might be upset when the synth you dropped $ on doesn't stay in tune. This unit takes about 15 minutes to warm up before the oscillators are "stable." With voltage controlled analog stuff you're always going to experience some drift. The Roland SH-09 always had a little drift, and so does the Minilogue (it very conveniently lets you re-tune everything by pressing a couple buttons, though). So, you have to tune this thing every 20ish minutes like you would any other synth from the 60's or 70's. All that aside, this is a phenomenal, little synth! I'm completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of modulation options that are available in such a small package. The filter sounds phenomenal and every waveform is rich and full. It definitely Arps and Moogs if you need it too, but there are so many other wonderful sounds in this box! My only complaints are that the v/oct on the second oscillator isn't normalized to the incoming midi signal, and it's a little weird to me that the mixer has so many waveforms from the first oscillator normalized to it and none of the waveforms from the second oscillator are. But those are all minor because it'seasy enough to just patch it the way you want it.Overall, I'm in love with this little synth! It's soooooo easy to get lost making sounds, and that's crazy considering that it's roughly the size of half a sheet of paper!!

Unique modular voice

The pitch tracking is a bit off, but I feel like it gives the oscillators more character. It's definitely not unplayable-I didn't buy it to shred anyways. The oscillators are robust and very 'natural' sounding. The filter is extremely smooth and versatile. Super snappy aggressive ADSR envelope as well...Buchla-esque, if you will. I will be buying more from Pittsburgh, that's no question.

It's alright

Sounds are good but pitch tracking is very off. It doesn't sound as full or rich ("solid"?) as the moog offerings. One of the jacks broke within a week and I had to contact the company. Still waiting for a response. Obviously some quality control issues going on that I hope get resolved - I want to love the unit!
