Dual preamp modes for big sound

The folks at the Fulltone Custom Shop loaded the Solid State Tape Echo with two preamps to give you a wide range of sounds. The EP-3 mode is identical to the original Echoplex EP-3 unit down to the TIS58 JFET circuit. This is the preamp that was favored by Jimmy Page, Brian May, Tommy Bolin, and others for its slight bass cut and treble boost. If you want classic tone, then the EP-3 mode is for you. The Solid State Tape Echo's Full mode preamp delivers a full-range rich sound, just like your bypassed tone. Take it from the Sweetwater crew - whether you choose your rig's pure tone or a vintage-voiced tone, the Fulltone Custom Shop Solid State Tape Echo has the cool echo sound you want!

The unmistakable tone of tape

If you've ever played through a "healthy" Echoplex tape echo unit, you know that no delay (rackmount or pedal, analog or digital) can replicate its natural, warm, and shimmery tones. The downside? They could be noisy and unreliable. But now the folks at Fulltone come to the rescue with the Solid State Echo! It's dead-quiet, and they've completely re-vamped the electronics, the tape transport path, and even the tape cartridge itself! Now you can hit the stage or make tracks with authentic tape echo without fear!

Tweakable delay times and tape speeds

The Solid State Echo provides effects ranging from a quick plate reverb-like emulation to full 1 second delays. It includes a top panel-mounted dual speed toggle switch to choose between Hi-Speed and Lo-Speed operation. Hi-Speed gets you lots of highs, less bass, and a True Repeat without the pitch variation of the old Echoplex. Lo-Speed is warm, with lots of bass, less highs, and a slight "warble" that imparts a natural chorus effect made popular by artists such as Eric Johnson.

The only problem with this is now I need two. The preamp on this really makes a HUGE difference when engaged and sounds so great I need another one for my other mono rig now. Once you hear it you and get used to it you can't go back and I'm running it through a Mesa JP2C amp in the loop so it's not like the amp needed any help. When I tried it on the Marshalls, Bogner and other Mesa's it did the same thing in front or in the loop. To me this unit is the one thing available other than the guitar or amp itself that is a true game changer for tone. It has a sound I just can't get out of any of my pedals I have due to the TIS58 JFET running on 22 volts and I haven't even mentioned the delays which it what the unit is for. Get the cancel footswitch and you can leave it engaged all the time and bring the delay in and out as needed. The delay on this unit is super awesome as well. The only thing that comes to mind is organic. It simply blows away all my Eventide, TC, Lexicon, Line 6, Pigtronix and even the Korg SDD delays. The digitals still do their thing and are nice but there really is a huge audible difference to my ears. Compared to the TTE version which I run on a stereo rig the delays aren't quite as clean on this unit but if I could only have one I would choose this SSTE. If you need stereo delay get a panner and run it after this unit. I do that on the TTE anyway when I want my delays bouncing back and forth on the stereo rig part of my wet dry wet rig and it doesn't do that in any of the three stereo modes though mode 2 is cool. Compared to the Replicator tape delay well it's great too but you don't get that preamp circuit of the SSTE enough said. Do yourself a favor drop the $ it hurts but you will never look back just like that expensive guitar or amp. As always Sweetwater support and my sales man Derek Kemp are great! I wish I could say the same about Fulltone customer support but I haven't heard back from them on some questions on other gear they offer in over three weeks. I guess they are too busy making great hand built gear which I'm cool with that too.

Excellent Machine

What an excellent piece of engineering! The Fulltone SSTE is one of those devices that when you pull it from the box, it just feels solid. The tones on this thing are incredible, it sounds like an old EP-3 echoplex I once played through, just with a wider range of tones and less noise. The smaller footprint is also nice! Love it.
