Tight and Focused Stereo Sound

If you're recording with a Zoom H6, H5, or Q8, and you want to get focused stereo sound, then Sweetwater recording experts recommend the Zoom SSH-6 microphone capsule. This unique microphone combines a shotgun center section with left and right capsules, resulting in a focused center zone with clear stereo separation. Because it relies on Mid-Side stereo processing, not only does the SSH-6 deliver perfectly mono-compatible stereo sound, but it also lets you control the stereo width after recording. And to make recording outdoors easier, Zoom also includes a hairy windscreen with the SSH-6 capsule.

Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule Features:
  • A Mid-Side stereo shotgun microphone for your modular Zoom Handy Recorder
  • Highly directional focus combined with precise stereo separation is perfect for sound design applications
  • Mid-Side stereo format lets you adjust the stereo spread after recording and ensures mono compatibility
  • Hairy windscreen included for reduction of wind noise when recording outdoors
  • Compatible with Handy Recorders including the H5 and H6 as well as the Q8 Handy Video Recorder
The Zoom SSH-6 delivers tight stereo to your Handy Recorder!

Great mid-side mic for recording concerts

I had used the mid/side module which comes with the Zoom H6 for a live recording of my community band and was impressed with how easy it is to edit the stereo field. Much better than with the X-Y module. So I bought this SSH-6 stereo shotgun capsule and find it's even better at capturing a more precise mid sound, making for even better stereo field editing. This will work very well for live concert recordings of my community band where I like to have the recorder about 20-30 feet away from the band to capture a more cohesive sound. The shotgun part of this mic will be better to focus the band's sound and eliminate a lot of the intervening audience noise, while the side mic had a larger capture area for the stereo field part of the recording. Unlike the mono shotgun capsule, this stereo shotgun capsule does not need to be close to the source of the sound.

Windscreen problem

Just tried out the mic for the first time. I love the sound it gave me - no complaints there at all. The problem is that I couldn't keep the "hair" from the windscreen out of the picture. That type of windscreen might be acoustically the best, but if I can't keep it out of the picture, it's worthless. I'd love it if they made a foam windscreen.
