Ibanez SR605 - Walnut Reviews

    Good bass for the price

This is my first five-string bass. I was looking a less expensive Ibanez, also a five-string, after playing one a few weeks ago at a local retailer. The Ibanez I planned to purchase felt good in my hands and I liked the tone. Then, I saw the SR605 and said, "My, my, this one looks tasty." I was fortunate that there was a "used" one available on Sweetwater, although I can't find anything to indicate this bass looks like it's not new.

The bass looks gorgeous and it is LIGHT-WEIGHT beyond what I thought. I really believed the wood would have this thing weighing more like a Les Paul. Nope! It's incredibly light-weight which greatly reduces shoulder fatigue. It sports a thin neck allowing quick transition. Unlike other basses that have thin necks and thus feel "plastic," the neck is smooth and, at a full 24 frets, is incredible.

As stated, this is my first five-string bass, so I'm also getting used to the "active circuitry" on board the bass. I don't need to use the pre-amp I ordered a while ago from Sweetwater - not with this bass, at least - as the on-board circuitry gives the boost for bass/mid/treble wherever and whenever I want it. I can produce a gut-punching bass rumble or tweak it for high-end slap treble, all without having to walk away from the bass.

Aside from getting used to having a low "B" string, I have no complaints about the bass thus far. I'm used to flatwounds and all of my other basses are strung with said type of strings. As these are roundwounds (Ibanez), my 4.5 stars is due to my own inexperience and ineptitude in dealing with a fifth string, roundwounds, and getting used to the circuitry.

Don't let that 1/2 of a star deter you - this is a really nice bass! Let the 1/2 star be a 'warning' if you are going from a passive four-string to an active five-string. There *will* be a learning curve. Thus far, that "curve" is wonderful, and I really enjoy playing this bass every day.

Sadly, my Hofner and Rickenbacker feel left-out of the bass action.

    The Last Bass I'll Own

I'm old enough to now say that this will be my last bass purchase. and I'm not disappointed. What a beautiful instrument! I love the brightness, action, and tone. Great electronics. And it's a gorgeous guitar. Thanks to Matt Adams at Sweetwater for making the buying experience a great one. The Gator Bag was a smart purchase, too. Fits like a glove.
