Seymour Duncan SL59-1 Little '59 at a Glance:
  • Sound
  • Complete setup

The SL59-1 Little '59 P.A.F.-voiced single-coil-sized humbucker is great for country, jazz, blues, funk, classic rock and heavy rock. This little brute was designed to impart the warm, smooth tone of an old Patent Applied For humbucker in a direct replacement, single-coil size. It possesses an even, dynamic response, and its adjustable pole pieces allow the guitarist to fine tune the string balance and dial in just the right amount of punch. Compared to the JB Jr., it has less output and more upper-mids. The SL59-1 Little '59 comes with four-conductor hookup cable.

Complete setup
Available for both bridge and neck/middle positions, the SL59-1 Little '59 is a good match in all well-balanced instruments, and works equally well with maple and rosewood fingerboards.

This Little Pup Really Sizzles

First, let me say that I've never met a Seymour Duncan pickup I didn't like. I bought a Squire '51 with the thought of rebuilding it from the ground up. When I got to the pickups, it was just a matter of which SD's I wanted to use, so I went with a Pearly Gates to replace the Fender humbucker and a SD quarter pounder for the strat pup. Both performed beautifully, but it was an unfair match-up. The QP was no match against the PG--my fault, not the pups. So I pulled the quarter pounder [to be used in another project] and went with this SL59-1. Wow! With new strings, pots, neck, tuners, and SD well-paired humbuckers, this '51 really sizzles. In full disclosure, I kept the original bridge and string-thru ferrules; I saw no need to replace them.

Perfect compliment

When I set out to re-invent my Stratocaster, I started with the mini JB, then I researched a good compliment for that big tone. I found it in a pair of Mini 59s. Together they make my Stratocaster capable of producing any tone I need, from soft and mellow to fire breathing metal. There's no thin tinny sound here, my Strat is now a raging beast.

PAF tone in a tiny package

This product definitely performs as advertised, and at about the same price as a good jazz humbucker. I can get great jazz sounds out of my Strat with this pickup in the neck position. Of course with a solid body, light gauge strings, and a tremolo bridge it's not going to sound exactly the same as a real jazzbox -- but it's really good. The instructions and diagram were clear and accurate. I did not swap the black and gray wires as the instructions suggested for a Strat, and so lost the hum-cancelling in switch position 4 (but will try that next weekend). I've not adjusted the individual pole pieces yet, so it may sound even better when I get to that.

Great pickup that gives you the options of the classic neck humbucker, or split for that Strat single coil tone.
