I love this bass!!!

I started playing a 5 string about 5 years ago (played 4 string on/off since the mid-1980s). I really liked the 5 string, except for the lack of tension in the low B. I also wasn't thrilled with the tone I was getting from the particular bass I had (it had a lot of adjustment to it, but I never hit anything that made me grin like a kid in a toy store). I decided to step up to a 35" scale for the low B and I liked what I’d read and seen of the Lakland Skyline series. I wasn’t aware of the Chi-Sonic pickups until I saw the J-Sonic bass here at Sweetwater online. I did some research online (couldn’t find any locally to try out) including listening to the Chi-Sonic sound clips available at the Lakland website. I decided to take a gamble on it and ordered the gold J-Sonic 5. The first time I played it (about 2 months ago) the sound I heard put that elusive grin on my face. The J-Sonic has a jazz bass tone, but with an added depth that just floors me when I hear it. I’ve been told it sounds like a jazz bass on steroids and one person even said it almost sounded like Tuba with how much growl and punch it had. The low B string feels more like the other strings now and the low notes ring out with more definition and equality of tone (the previous bass started getting muddy below the 5th fret on the low B). There is a little bit of single coil hum when you roll off either of the volume knobs, but it’s so subtle on mine that it doesn’t show up in the live mix. The two pickups work well to offer up a lot of tonal variations and you can roll the treble down to really alter the character of the sound if you want to. My J-Sonic was setup well (although I did tweak it some to better suite my playing). The fit and finish are great (the neck is sooo smooth) and the frets are very well dressed (a testament to the PLEK process and finishing by Lakland). The volume and tone knobs are silky smooth. The bass looks nice and feels even better. The Aztec Gold looks much better in person than I thought it would (I generally don’t like gold paint). It reacts to light almost like a pearl finish, with different light sources causing the color to shift between yellowish gold to an almost copper color and almost anywhere in between. The only thing I wasn’t blown away by is the pickguard, which had a rough edge around the truss rod cutout (It’s well finished otherwise). While it took me a little bit to get used to the wider spacing (compared with my previous bass), I’m hooked. I expect I’ll be playing this bass for many years. It is absolutely worth more than what I paid for it and I still get that grin when I listen to it.

Lakland J Sonic 5 string

Ok, I just played a gig with this bass I loved every minute of it thanks to this bass. It sounded great all night, tight, punchy, plenty everything from lows to highs, and more than enough gain. I've owned and played many Laklands over the years so I already knew I would like this one going in, but WOW, didn't know I'd like it this much. 35 inch scale works good for me too. Wish it came with a gig bag, or at least, I wish Sweetwater carried Laklang gig bags. I didn't even mind the nickel strings it came with. They appear to be D'Addario. Highly recommended, the bass, not necessarily the strings.

^is what I said when I first plugged this in. Literally blown away. The tone you can get from this thing us unbelievable. From vintage round thump to modern piano like cleans, this thing can do it all. Easily the best sounding B string I've ever heard on 5 string. Not only does it sound great, it's a dream to play. The action out of the box was perfect and the strings are a perfect feel. Lakland nailed it with this bass. I have a feeling this is going to be a main axe type bass.
