Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s P-Rails 2-piece Pickup Set - Black Reviews
A ton of tonal options from a single set of pickups! That's what you get from Seymour Duncan P-Rails! P-Rails fit inside any standard humbucker opening and gives you the choice of P-90, humbucking, and single-coil sounds - all from the same pickup! These aren't close facsimiles of these lauded pickups; they're spot-on because they are the real thing. A real P-90 is paired with a blade pickup. Alone, the P-90 is loaded with great P-90 sounds. When paired with the blade, you get thick humbucking tones. Rounding out the trifecta, the blade alone conjures classic single-coil sounds. The P-Rails are a tone-hungry guitarists dream come true!

Extremely Versatile Pickup!
I definitely recommend installing these pickups where the wiring allows you to explore the versatility that they allow for. If you don't go for the Triple Shots, I recommend push/pull (or in my case push/push) pots that allow you to do this. The full Humbucker (series) sound is great. The P90 by itself is absolutely fantastic! I can't get enough of that sound. If the 60 cycle hum gets to you, you can also run the Humbuckers in parallel, which provides a very close P90 sound with hum cancelling. The rail single coil by itself is pretty good too and might shine more if you are pairing with a single coil in the middle (I am only using the 2 P-Rails) but it is still great to have the option.
All in all, I think this is an incredible pickup. The people at Seymour Duncan were really helpful too in answering all of my wiring questions before installation and you can't beat the customer service at Sweetwater.
Seymour Duncan SHPR-1s
Fantastic. Period.
Seymour Duncan P rails pickups
The most versatile pickups I have used in 50 years of playing GUITAR! I installed them with separate on-off-on switches and this gives me 13 possible tones. The humbucker mode has plenty of power to overdrive my amp, but they clean up nicely when I back the volume knob off. The P90 coils have that famous growl and grit. The blade coils give lots of bite. I highly recommend these pickups!
THE PICKUPS, and THE SERVICE.
Ok.
The pickups are AMAZING, now that they're working.
The main difficulty was that one of them came fried, and then this compounded with the fact that the info on wiring at the Seymour-Duncan site is NOT CORRECT so my technician could not figure out that one of them was not working until he put a whole day of work on the issue.
Now, they sound fantastic and cover for the need of a dedicated P90 guitar.
AND the best is always the Sweetwater service; I have not bought anything from anybody else since I started using Sweetwater, there's just not a business out there that is equivalent to the level of service I get here; my sales engineer Alden Debee) does always solid for me for everything I need.
2 guitars in 1; one GREAT, one REAL GOOD
You get a GREAT P90 dedicated guitar and a REAL GOOD Humbucker sound (NOT at the level of my PRS 24 Standard, but close -really a PERSONAL opinion-).
One thing to consider: my local luthier had a little bit of a difficult time getting the wiring diagram to be able to have the pull pods setup right.
DBG has "the ultimate Epiphone build" video in youtube, but no wiring diagrams.
The Ultimate Epiphone Build pickups!!!
I follow DBG Darrell Braun Guitar at YouTube and he used these in his video on the Ultimate Epiphone Build.
He was right, the tones I gor now are SICK, and the combinations are multiple, with the advantage of getting a P90 setup without having to have a dedicated P90 guitar.
Worth the money and the service money to change them...
It's now much better than my PRS. I know! CRAZY TO SAY THAT but it's true.
Better than expected..
I did like the nameless reviewer.. I put the P-rails in the Epiphone Les Paul Standard body. I guess we both had the inspiration of Darrell Braun's building of the Super Epi shown on YouTube..
However, I really loves it!
P-rails exactly as advertised
They do all the things. Both humbucker modes sound great. The rail is great especially when you use them together. The p-90s steal the show though as the best setting. I had Sweetwater install these in my Epiphone Les Paul standard plus top pro and they gave the guitar an entirely different personality. Definitely money well spent.
These deliver
First big love to sweetwater for great everything service to shipping. Now it would be really easy to just copy what it is already said because they do exactly what they are advertised to do how refreshing is that. That being said I have owned this great Yamaha rgx520 for about 5 years and played out with just the stock pickups which did a good job for stock humbuckers. I saw these advertised and did the research youtube, Sweetwater and purchased these along with the Seymour Duncan triple shot pickup mounting rings. Which these allowed the pickups to perform to the fullest without drilling holes for toggle switches. So they have been in for 4 days my band loves them, I've written more and they have literally given me a new guitar. They run (the humbucker) hotter than the stock pickups I had no complaints they clean up nice with the volume rolled down and push when I want them to. All variaitions of these where clean and articulate. I will be building a new guitar around these pickups in the future. Also these pickups are great for all styles.
Jack of All Trades
P-Rails are the most versatile pickups I've ever used. While they might not nail the P90 or Fender tone 100%, it's pretty close, and I love the P90 tone out of these. In humbucking mode, they're a little more mellow than I expected, not as aggressive-sounding as my other Duncans, but they have a good character.
I wouldn't recommend the Triple Shot mounting rings, however. They're fragile and break easily. The pickups come with instructions for 3 different wiring schemes using push/pull tone pots. I would recommend choosing one of those over the Triple Shot.
Love these pickups!
These pickups do exactly what they advertise, but the wiring diagram that comes with it doesn't begin to cover what these pickups are capable of. The rail and P90 each sound great (if typically hummy) alone, but combined give a slightly different spin on the typical Gibson style humbucker sound that definitely was music to my ears. The P90 definitely colors the sound a bit more in humbucking position, and that mid punch is totally sweet.
