Seymour Duncan Pickups - It's all about the tone!

The SH-PG Pearly Gates pickup was originally conceived to conjure tones similar to the pickups found in the venerable 1959 Les Paul Standard (the guitar that set the standard for blues guitar tone). And chock-full of tone it is! Described as "sweet but slightly rude," the SH-PG Pearly Gates pickup makes your amp come alive with the perfect blend of sustain and harmonics, not to mention a nice, bright top end. A versatile pickup, the SH-PG Pearly Gates can be paired with virtually any humbucker for a variety of tonal options.

Seymour Duncan SH-PG Pearly Gates at a Glance:
  • Sound
  • Complete setup

The SH-PG Pearly Gates pickup has a tone that can be characterized as warm, with a slightly hotter-than-vintage humbucker output. You've heard the SH-PG on everything from blues to classic and southern rock to modern rock, its versatility is the key to its success. Originally designed as a re-creation of the pickups in the '59 Les Paul Standard, the SH-PG mimics the tone that defined the raw, rebellious sound of Texas blues-rock. The Pearly Gates pickup is sweet but slightly rude, with great sustain and a bright top end that makes harmonics jump out of the guitar. It comes with a 4-conductor hookup cable to facilitate a variety of pickup-switching options.

Complete setup

The SH-PG Pearly Gates pickup is often used in both neck and bridge positions and can be used in the bridge with an APH-1 Alnico II Pro in the neck for smoother tones. A Pearly Gates pickup in the neck with a SH-11 Custom works well for heavier rock sounds from the bridge position. The SH-PG Pearly Gates pickup is great for brighter-toned instruments and works especially well with maple and ebony fingerboards. It also works great with hollow and semi-hollowbody guitars.

This is a happy costumer.

I bought a cheap used Fernandes retro rocket HSS guitar. And put the Pearly Gate in the bridge and sounds amazing. I'm very pleased with just this one pickup. If it's good enough for Billy Gibbons it's good enough for me. If your looking for that tone then you should get this pickup.

Best so far

I have several other guitars, mostly DiMarzio. And they do their job well. 6 months ago I bought a Texas Special (used) Strat with stock Gates and I haven't put the guitar down since. Warm, bluesy tone. Not high output, but it takes you right to the edge. Is it the best pickup for EVERY guitar? Probably not. But for the Strat I can only testify.

Perfect for blues/rock/pop!

Installed this Pearly Gates humbucker to replace the stock bridge pickup in my PRS SE semi-hollow guitar. The improvement in tone and responsiveness is simply amazing! I don't normally experiment with pickups, but I'm really glad I did. This pickup puts out a very focused (all the desirable overtones without any of the muddy ones) and expressive voice that overdrives in a very musical way. For the styles I play with this guitar - blues, classic rock and pop - this pickup fits perfectly.

Sweet sounding humbucker

Replaced an old super distortion x2n pickup in my '78 Strat with the Pearly Gates. This is a very sweet sounding pickup with rich harmonics and great sustain. not too over the top, Definitely adds a subtle warm rich tone to this guitar and has given my classic Strat a whole new life. I had not played this guitar in several years, now i won't put it down. I play in a cover band doing mostly 70s to now rock and a bit of country.
Music background: mid-level musician, hobbyist

Pearly Gates are Heavenly

This is the best PAF style bridge pup I've ever used, hands down. It chimes without twang (that's a first), and it is clear and sharp under gain, without breakup. Not too ballsy, and not too thin.Great pup for a Les Paul or an SG.
