Seymour Duncan Pickups: It's All About the Tone

The '59 Model SH-1 is Seymour Duncan's take on the classic Seth Lover PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucker that was found on the Gibson Les Paul in the late 1950s. The SH-1 sports plain enamel wire, a long-legged bottom plate, vintage-correct single-conductor cable, and the absence of a Seymour Duncan logo. This vintage re-creation sports a slightly more scooped midrange than the Seth Lover model and is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance. For flexible tones with vintage flair, the Duncan '59 Model SH-1 is a perfect fit.

59s are the best value true PAF out there.

Many companies including Gibson use dyed Poly coil wire in their PAF clones because its cheaper wire. Poly wire sounds completely different. I bought a set of these from Sweetwater and the cool thing is for the price you are getting 42 AWG Enamel wire like they used on the original PAFs. This is a great deal and pickup for getting that real vintage tone.

Great pickups

These pickups are truly great sounding. I bought a pair and this review is for the pair, not just one. I put them in a Mexican made Strat, and it really came alive. They are bright, powerful, they have high gain, and are everything I needed them to be.

I have a 2007 The Heritage H-150 CM Trans Black that came stock with SD '59's. This is how I came to know these pickups. Well, I installed a matched set in my 2011 Gibson USA SG Standard. WOW! These are most likely the closest a guitarist can get to real '59 humbuckers. The cool thing about Seymour Duncan's version of the '59 humbucker is they are hand wound on the original Gibson pickup winding machine and they are wax potted which makes sense in 2016. Some guitarist's feel they need a hotter bridge pickup but let me just say that I've been playing guitar since 1979 and have used plenty of "HOT" bridge pickups but these days I concentrate on tone not so much output. I feel like these '59's have the warmest tone, clarity, not articulation, and harmonic overtones in spades. Besides there are hundreds of overdrive pedals on the market that will boost your signal if you feel you need a hotter sound. Lastly, you just can't beat the price. These are the only replacement pickups I will be using from here on out. Vintage tone with modern wax potting.

59' humbucker

I put the 59' humbuckers in all my gibsons they just add that warm round PAF tone in my opinion they are the best pickup company.

Blown away again:)

Okay, once again I spent a couple of extra bucks to get this little chrome covered 59. I've had lots of experience replacing pick ups using various other brands, usually a little cheaper, but in my opinion, no one comes close to Seymour duncans! I put this baby in my epi sg jr, man it sounds like a million bucks! Every effect I put on this thing just shines...dirty, and clean. Seymour just gets it...I'm a fan now, and a life long customer. I'm tired of rolling the dice when it comes to other, usually cheaper brands. In my book, it's better to spend that extra 20 bucks to make that axe a keeper...only one mans humble opinion, but duncans are the best...yo yo, peace out:)
