No frills great playing and sounding guitar
First I salute Sweetwater and Mark Chapman for excellent service and follow through. I was looking for a light weight guitar and sweetwater's online weight measurements and pictures were very helpful.
This model SGJ with the black pickup covers is apparently being replaced by the SGJ14 with zebra-coil pickups and a slim-profile neck. I suspect the guitar will be the same in other respects which means it's a simple entry-level Gibson that delivers in all the key areas: two good humbuckers, a comfy neck and excellent quality, despite the somewhat rough-hewn appearance. Actually I like the dark satin finish. NOTE that the model being phased out has a rather fat neck that I suspect is the '50s rounded' style. Even though I have a small hand I'm in love with this neck - so comfortable. If you've never tried this fatter style of neck you should test-drive one -- you may become a convert. I'm also impressed that the guitar is loud and resonant when unplugged. The gig bag was very deluxe and Gibson included a manual - a nice touch. Fender just bounces you to their website.
You can't go wrong with the SGJ whether you get the older one like I did or the newer 'zebra-coil' model. This is a serious guitar.
