Ideal Drums for Any Kind of Rock

The right drums can make or break any rock tune. The Rock Warehouse SDX expansion for Toontrack's Superior Drummer is your ticket to achieving the driving drums your next project demands. Whether you're programming drums by hand, playing them via an electronic kit, or simply looking for a quick drag-and-drop solution to spice up your music, you'll get what you need in The Rock Warehouse SDX. This SDX expansion includes three top-of-the line kits that feature classic Gretsch shells, an Ayotte Custom set, and the massive sound of Dunnett Titanium drums - all tracked at Bryan Adams's world-famous The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver and engineered by Randy Staub. The result is nothing short of breathtaking.

Note: This expansion pack requires a separate installation of Toontrack Superior Drummer. For more information, call your Sweetwater Sales Engineer.

Performed and produced by two modern rock masters

If you love rock and metal, then Randy Staub is a name you very well might recognize. With mixing credits of Metallica's "Black Album", Avril Lavigne's "Under My Skin", and Nickelback's "Silver Side Up", just to name a few of his 300-some productions, this engineering guru has set the pace for modern rock in many important ways. Speaking of Nickelback, Toontrack's The Rock Warehouse SDX features the drum stylings of none other than ex-Nickelback drummer Ryan Vikedal, whose drumming makes the included MIDI library an authoritative collection of rock grooves and riffs if there ever was one.

Recorded in one of the world's top studios with the finest gear

Located in Vancouver's Gastown, Studio 2 in Bryan Adams's The Warehouse Studio was the perfect setting to track The Rock Warehouse SDX. A cavernous 32' x 58' live room with a 26'-high ceiling makes provides all the ambient sound and spacial dimension you could ask for. At the same time, Staub placed the drums in one of the studio's larger iso rooms (with the doors open), so that the close mics would be nice and dry, providing you with total control over your ambience. Like all Toontrack drum expansions, The Rock Warehouse SDX was recorded with top-shelf mics, but these sounds feature the added bonus of being tracked through one of the three existing Neve A6630 consoles built specifically for Sir George Martin at AIR Studios back in 1979. Suffice it to say, you'll be hard press to find better drum sounds anywhere.

Toontrack The Rock Warehouse SDX Expansion Features:

  • An amazing collection of drum sounds and MIDI performances for Toontrack Superior Drummer
  • Engineered by Randy Staub, whose extensive recording and mixing credits include Metallica, Nickelback, Motley Crue, and many others
  • Recorded at The Warehouse Studio through a rare Neve A6630 console originally built by Rupert Neve exclusively for Sir George Martin at AIR Studios
  • Three complete kits include Gretsch, Ayotte, and Dunnett drums as well as three additional snare drums for added variety
  • 3 cymbal sets included, as well as tambourine and cowbell
  • Extensive rock oriented MIDI library performed by Ryan Vikedal (formerly of Nickelback)
  • Includes a total of 20GB worth of raw, unprocessed drum samples

If You're Looking For Big Rock Sound, Start Here

I purchased the Rock Warehouse in search for samples that suited my bands style as we just began recording our EP. The stock samples that came with SD didn't provide the pop-punk sound and punch we need. Which don't get me wrong, the stock samples are great for your modern day songwriter - they're completely usable across the board.

After installing these, you'll notice the difference is night and day. Even with just the dry sound I could immediately tell that the constructed kit would cut through the mix like a hot knife - which it did. Mix these with care, as they don't require too much mixing/processing to achieve realistic big rock sounding drums. Over-mix and you may not be completely satisfied.

Some of the things that immediately stood out to me were the toms. I often found myself having to go a little over the top with compression to get the attack I want regarding the original SD tom samples. But the toms that come with this download are amazing. There's no better way to put it. The kick and snare sounds were the two of the biggest things I really needed to catch my attention as you may know, these two particular drums drive the tempo and beat in a lot of genres. Again, mixed correctly you can achieve a number of great kick sounds and a snare that punches you right in the face every time!

Now, the reason this particular review is missing that last .5
Where is the kick out mic that's on the original SD samples? Sure, I'm content with just the kick in, because there's work-arounds such as layering & blending a fatter sounding sample and many other techniques, but having that option there is nice. But that's my only complaint! Other than that, the Superior Drummer Rock Warehouse kills it! I would highly recommend for ANY genre of rock.

A quick shoutout for my sales engineer, Jason Koons. He followed up with me a few days after downloading the product to see how I liked it so far. Can honestly say that Sweetwater has some of the best customer service around!

Solid SDX

Solid Sdx. The toms are definitely the strongest element of this SDX. But with some tweaking the Snare, Kick and cymbals are also very usable. The midi library also have some solid loops for building drum tracks.

There's a reason so many Toontrack products begin with "EZ" - they really do make music creation easy. If you're like many of the songwriters here at Sweetwater, then you know how important it is to stay in the groove, especially if you're adding elements to your tracks that are a bit out of your wheelhouse. Toontrack products such as EZdrummer and EZkeys cover backing tracks in all kinds of styles, so you don't need to find session players to create songs, while EZmix lets you add polish to your tracks without being a pro engineer. There are tons of expansions to flesh out your palette, and software such as Superior Drummer if you want to dive in deeper. And thanks to our amazing relationship with Toontrack, the Sweetwater staff gets to use it all, so you can always get the inside story from your Sales Engineer.
