Like having five complete tube amps inside one head

Imagine having five classic tube-amp power plants instantly accessible and packed into one amp head. Now imagine being able to apply any one of these configurations to each of four fully-featured channels, complete with rectifier switching capabilies, reverb, and several gain choices. Mesa's Progressive Linkage gives you just that! The Road King sports an impressive tube complement, including two EL34s and four 6L6 power tubes. It also houses no less than six 12AX7 preamp tubes and two 5U4 rectifier tubes. Each channel's Progressive Linkage functionality lets you combine 6L6s and EL34s, use them independently, or, in the case of the quartet of 6L6s, use the power of all four.

Modes offer even more tonal flexibility

In addition to giving you what amounts to five different tube power amp configurations from one amp, the Road King also gives you amazing control over your gain levels. Each channel offers three mode choices. The two pairs of channels (rhythm one and two and lead three and four) are duplicated so you can use similar preamp sounds with different power tube, rectifier, and wattage configurations. Channels one and two offer clean, fat, and Brit. Channels three and four provide raw, vintage, and modern.

Don't just switch channels - switch cabinets

Cabinet Switcher, a unique Road King feature, includes load protection and lets you dedicate specific cabs for clean and overdriven sounds. It also works great with Mesa's split-chamber Road King cabinets, which include separate open and closed sections.

Dial in the amp response that suits you

This amp doesn't just stop with a huge array of tweakable tones, however. Mesa applied the same attention to detail to the amp's response and dynamics. A Switchable Rectifier feature allows you to tune the power supply for the feeling that best suits your style - tube for a vintage-inspired sag or silicone diodes for tight tracking punch and authority. Bold/spongy power located on the main AC power switch provides a reduced line voltage setting for additional power sag and enhanced top-end harmonic content. Its front panel location allows for on-the-fly selection of incoming line voltage with the full 117 volts for headroom and authority, or a reduced voltage setting (like a built-in variac) for a vintage-inspired brown vibe.

Effects loops and silent tuning functionality

When it's time to play the tuning song, you need to make sure only your tuner hears it! That's why Mesa included a dedicated tuner out jack with a tuner feed. A tuner mute switch on the included footswitch provides a silent tuning feature. An external mute jack allows control of the tuner mute feature from an external master switcher. Want effects loop functionality to match your every need? This amp's dual series effects loops each include a master send level. All loop circuitry can be hard-bypassed. You can run separate processing for channels one and two and three and four, or run separate effects in loop one and loop two for an amazing blend.

Professional musician's dream

I was very lucky to use this amp as we hired this unit and its special half open back 4x12" cabinet for 8 concerts two years ago. I used every possible combination of the amp to get a 90's Dual Rectifier, a 70's vintage Marshall, a very good blues overdrive and an amazing clean tone. All in one amp. I redirected the amp's clean channel and EL34 Marshall channel to 2 open back speakers. Since I used the closed back V30's for the overdrive sounds. Every professional guitarist's dream !!!

First off, there are no "enter clean man" settings, like most modeling amps. You have to kno how to work an amp to get this baby to sing. That being said, there is almost no tone this amp can't create. AUTHENTICALLY. Granted, it's not a Mark. But thats a whole other side of Mesa. I've owned mine for 6 weeks now and just finished tweaking my settings. (What other amp could you flick a switch on and say 'No, I like 6L6's better than EL34's.'?!?!) I'm in a few bands. One is a cover band, and this amp can jump around to any style of music. With authority. So nice to have an amp that versatile on stage. The amount of configurations with tube selection, cabinet selection and all the modes seem a bit daunting at first. Take it one channel at a time. You won't ever miss any of your old amps!

Super tones and awesome versatility!

With its four channels, 6 power tube mixing capabilities, & three modes per channel, I cannot think of any tone that the Mesa Boogie Road King II is unable to create. It is sparkling clean--something that channel 1 excels at; it can get Brit crunchy without breathing hard--the realm of channel 2; Mesa vintage gain that has defined a generation of metal is present and accounted for--right at home in channel 3; and over the top gain that seems beyond the needs of anyone--is channel 4 with the modern mode engaged specialty. Think of it as much of an analog modeler as 4-channel amp. So many options, so many tones, and superior quality, it is the only amp that I can ever foresee needing! We all know how amazing the Mesa tone is, it has defined metal for the past 20+ years; while the Road King II gives you all the metallic muscle (and the ability to add some mid range grind with the EL34s) you could ever want and need, the clean channels are equally astounding and dynamic! Three dimensional tones that would make Fender jealous are there; tones that sparkle and shimmer pour forth from the Road King II. Don't hesitate, buy it now.

Most versatile amp ever.

This thing is filled with tubes. Tone controls unlike any other amp. And the fact you can run it through 4 cabs at 8 ohms is probably one of the greatest features ever. So many conveniences here. Worth every penny. The two effects loops allows for no need of noise reduction in your signal, or you can use them to go into certain effect modes for different songs when performing live. This amp can do anything.

Mesa Road King II

All I can say is wow. This amp is just ridiculous, I knew it would be another great amp from mesa but I wasn't prepared for the sonic authority this thing pushes. Cleans are from the lone star so if you can't make those tones work for ya you need to learn how to play guitar. Crunch tones will keep you busy with so many options and tube combinations from Marshall to triple rectifier and everything in between. Hi gain modes will destroy the planet! Put a maxon OD808 in front of it and a strait 4x12 rec cab behind it and you can turn your sheet rock to powder. I sold all my gear to buy 2 road kings and run them in stereo with an axe-fx which I use only for effects not amp simulation. This is the holy-grail rig, my tone search has ended.

Sweetwater Advice

Chris McCown

The Mothership. Progressive Linkage alone is such an innovative feature, it's worth the price of admission. You're not sure which you like better between the EL34 or 6L6 sound? Then just have both! This is Mesa's most versatile amp. Be careful though, if you buy this your other amps may collect dust!

The Mesa/Boogie Road King Series II Head is a tone seeker's dream. Allowing the different combinations of preamp voicings coupled with varying power tube complement make it totally unique in the marketplace. The speaker cabinet assigment per/channel is so useful in refining your tone as well. It's a powerful amp, so be careful with apartment level volume expectations. You really need to goose the volume to get the full tone out of this beast. I've enjoyed my Road King immensely and continue to explore its possibilities. Great amp.
