P-90 Pickups and Distinctive Style

Inspired by vintage motorcycles and designed from the ground up with feedback from real players, the Yamaha RS502 solidbody electric guitar promises to add a distinct vibe to your guitar collection. Two P-90 single-coil pickups are onboard to deliver punchy, chiming tone, while a push-pull Dry switch allows you to cut lows for even more sonic snap. Factor in a smooth-playing mahogany neck, topped with a rosewood fretboard and jumbo frets, and you have a guitar that's built to perform with the Yamaha RS502.

Yamaha Revstar Solidbody Electric Guitar at a Glance:
  • Add snap and presence with a push-pull Dry switch
  • Yamaha-designed P-90 pickups deliver iconic tone
  • Copious sustain from set-neck construction
  • Revstar series guitars are packed with personality
Add snap and presence with a push-pull Dry switch

Yamaha's innovative Dry switch on the RS502 gives you the tone-shaping capabilities of a coil tap circuit, even though the RS502 already has single-coil pickups. The push-pull Dry switch is actually a passive filter that cuts out low frequencies, giving your tone even more clarity and punch to cut through the mix.

Yamaha-designed P-90 pickups deliver iconic tone

As far as Sweetwater is concerned, every guitarist should have a guitar loaded with P-90 single-coil pickups in their collection. You get the snap and spank of a single-coil pickup, but with the girth and low-mid richness that you'd expect from a humbucker. The custom-designed P-90 pickups in the RS502 utilize Alnico V magnets, a silver baseplate, and plain enamel wire, creating a clear, vintage-inspired tone with plenty of bite. Set your tube amplifier at its breakup point, and you'll be able to take the RS502 from clean and chiming to blazing overdrive just with the volume knob.

Copious sustain from set-neck construction

The mahogany neck on the Yamaha RS502 is set directly into the maple/mahogany body. This maximizes vibrational transfer for outstanding sustain and helps enhance note definition too. Clean tones ring out like a bell, while overdriven tones can sustain for days.

Revstar series guitars are packed with personality

Inspired by the bold styling of London and Tokyo's vintage street-racing motorbikes, Yamaha's Revstar series of electric guitars features dramatic curves, character-packed custom-wound pickups, and delightfully muscular tone. Each model in the Revstar lineup is full of its own distinct personality. These instruments exude a distinctiveness as unique as the guitarists who play them.

Yamaha RS502 Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:
  • Vintage-inspired guitar with comfortable rear body and front arm contours
  • Set-in neck construction enhances sustain and note definition
  • P-90 single-coil pickups deliver the richness of a humbucker with the snap of a single-coil pickup
  • Push-pull Dry switch cuts low frequencies for more clarity and definition
  • Smooth playability thanks to jumbo frets and a medium neck profile
The Yamaha RS502 would be a great addition to any guitar collection.

Great Guitar!

The Yamaha designed p90s hit that sweet spot between single coil and humbucker, not thin but still pops with no mud. I am a Fender single coil guy, and never really like any humbucker guitar I've played, but sometimes I am left feeling underwhelmed by a single coils thin sound. This guitar hits it right, and I love the high pass filter tone knob switch, it gives it even more pop and sparkle without going thin. The finish of the guitar and hardware is awesome. It hits the mark with how Yamaha designed these with cafe racer bikes in mind. This one reminds me of stripped down matte black old motorcycle with a lot of power. I am used to Fender necks, which are a little on the thin side, and I do play thumb over a lot. This neck is bigger and thicker which at first took a little getting used to, and out of box the setup was a bit higher than I like, but having the action lowered helped a lot with getting used to the bigger neck, which also I've found has a lot more pluses than negatives especially higher up on the neck for solos and bends.."SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES". From country to jazz to blues to rock this thing covers it all. Love Yamaha products, love plugging it into my THR10s for practice. Just awesome, and even as if not more awesome is Sweetwater's customer service. If I buy music equipment online for now on it will be from here at Sweetwater. I bought this guitar about a month ago and waited to write this review after the ups and downs of new gear purchases that everyone goes through to give a honest review. A month later and I wish I had more hours in the day to play this guitar.

Great setup and Customer Service

It's a great guitar and it came setup perfectly (though obviously there's some subjectivity there). Nice contrast to a Gibson I bought last year from MF that had sloppy workmanship/poor customer service. Sweetwater even sent me pics of the exact guitar I'd be receiving prior to shipping. Very thoughtful. It's not too heavy or light. The shop black is not reflective or glossy so it doesn't pickup finger prints. Neck is about medium, maybe on the light side, but comfortable even for my bass player hands. Pickups are amazing, got some brightness (but not too much) and not noisy at all. I'm an amateur and I've bought many guitars, including more expensive ones, and this one is one of the best.

Blues Guitar with Attitude

EXCELLENT Blues/Rock instrument! Playing into a pushed amp P-90 qualities are inspiring, plenty of bite, chime, and a haziness (neck pup) that is just what was wanted, this guitar delivers. The RS502 came nicely set-up for Blues, action high enough to include bottle-neck slide play. The guitar takes adjustment well, easy to tweak to playing preference, slightly lowered action but still nice string-bend grabs. Very happy with the purchase and customer service follow-on. The 'dry' switch is a bass cut which helps 'fit-the-mix' in cover tunes, nice not to have to change the amp. Tone knob covers a lot of territory, can get into regions seldom used, although is not overly brite. Been playing this guitar for three months, gig weekly. Love the loose feel and variety of Blues/SouthernRock tones of this guitar. Yamaha has done very well, hit the target in this striped-down, purpose-built machine.
