Great acoustic tones from Fishman!

Fishman's Rare Earth Blend merges the humbucking Rare Earth pickup with a high-quality internally mounted microphone for a "best of both worlds" approach to acoustic guitar amplification. The microphone is a mini hypercardioid electret for high volume and low feedback performance. The system combines the percussive attack and controlled sustain of the magnetic pickup with the resonant, ambient qualities captured by an internal microphone. Neodymium (a rare earth element, hence the name Rare Earth pickup) magnets provide excellent string-to-string balance, while the discrete circuitry keeps the Rare Earth's signal pure and clean.

Fishman Rare Earth Humbucking Pickup at a Glance:
  • The Pickup
  • The Preamp

The Pickup
This Fishman Rare Earth pickup is a "stacked coil" style, for musicians who demand quieter reproduction than a single coil pickup can offer. A brilliance knob, located on the side of the pickup, is easily accessible through the soundhole. In the "up" position, this knob provides a subtle, rising treble boost, from 2kHz to 20kHz. This position is especially effective for adding a bit of extra sparkle to finger style playing. In the "down" position, it provides a flat response, which produces a mellower sound, well suited for strumming and flatpicking.

The Preamp
The preamp is housed within the pickup. A low noise circuit design preserves the pickup's performance in any audio environment. The preamp allows you to plug the Rare Earth into a full range instrument amplifier, an unbalanced input of a PA system, a recording console or direct box, without the signal loss or degradation typically found with passive soundhole pickups. You may run cables up to 80' (25m) in length without any audible loss of fidelity.

Fishman Rare Earth Blend Acoustic Pickup Features:
  • Cutting-edge neodymium (a rare earth element) magnets
  • High-quality internally mounted microphone with hypercardioid polar pattern
  • Three-dimensional amplified acoustic guitar tone
  • Gooseneck is permanently attached
  • Can be plugged into an instrument amplifier, sound reinforcement system, recording console or direct box
  • Miniature battery mounts conveniently on the underside of the pickup (batteries included)
  • Low current design of the preamp allows 150 hours use between battery changes
  • Fits in soundholes as small as 3-5/8" diameter
  • Pre-wired output jack can also be endpin mounted
  • Active electronics for a pure, clean sound
  • Excellent string-to-string balance

Great Quality Pickup

I permanently installed this pickup into my Wechter dn8128 solid body acoustic. I was looking for a pickup to bring out the natural sound of the guitar, and it does it beautifully! For lighter picking/fingerpicking one roll of the blend switch slightly towards the mic and you get really precise pick/finger sounds along with great tone and even some percussion sound if you like to tap guitars. Give the switch a roll towards the center or slightly towards the humbucker and you get great tone for heavy strumming and chords, without having to deal with feedback or buzzing. I will say that with the system that we use for playing live, the gain on the board has to be turned up significantly higher when compared to an acoustic/electric Taylor that we use, but it does sound really good, and brings more natural acoustic sound than the Taylor pickup does. Overall a great pickup for natural acoustic sounds.

Crisp, well balanced acoustic sound

I was given this pickup as a gift a while ago put it aside because I was initially disappointed withthe sound, but the problem was my amp not the pickup. I just bought a Fishman Loudbox Pro artist amp, plugged this in and the sound is beautiful. Well balanced, crisp sound, and especially good on my old12-String. Highly recommend it.

Fishman Rare Earth Blend Acoustic Pickup

I wanted a pickup that made an acoustic guitar sound like an acoustic guitar. I also wanted a pickup that would be transferable from guitar to guitar. I am already a fan of Fishman products (I use a Fishman On-Board Prefix Permium Blend on another acoustic guitar), and the Fishman Rare Earth Blend pickup had all the features I was looking for in a pickup for my new guitar. I installed the pickup on a Martin HD-28 (installation is easy - just make sure you have a really nice drill bit for installing the end-pin jack). When I plugged into my acoustic amplifier, the sound was incredible. After a few adjustments on the amplifier, I had a sound that, in my opinion, captured a true acoustic sound. The sound was well balanced between highs and lows, and the ability to blend between the internal microphone and the humbucking pickup allows the user to tweak the pickup to get just the right sound. The internal microphone location also is adjustable to tweak the sound even a little bit more. I have used the pickup in live settings and have not experienced any feedback problems. I highly recommend this pickup.

Very accurate acoustic sound that can be mixed between Mic and Pickup. It is a "non invasive" pick up, that can be used in your vintage instruments that you do not want to make any hole/permanent damage. The mic can produce a bit of feedback in some circumstances, but nothing to be really concerned. It is pricey but I would say it worth every $!
