Perfect for the job
I've been using these to rack two mac minis for stage use. One runs Ableton Live (loops, clicks, tracks, etc), the other runs main stage (keyboard patches) throw that in a rack with some audio interfaces, rack mount DI's, and some power supplies and you have a killer keys rig/loop set up - I love it!
I purchased this RackMac to go along with the 2011 Mac Mini that I had also purchased from the awesome folks at Sweetwater. The downside to the Mini, is that its bottom is all plastic, with no grip whatsoever. The result is that your Mini will slide around on any desk surface, and due to its small size, can be removed by a thief pretty easily. Here's where the RackMac comes in. It securely houses, not one, but up to two Mac Mini computers, so that it not only blends in with the rack environment, but is totally secure, and keeps your connecting cables out of the way. What's even better is the possibilities it opens up for mobile use. Instead of having to lug around a huge Mac Pro, worry about your MacBook, or other PC, rack mount this baby with a Mini (which hands down the base model 2.3gHz 2011 Mini has more processing power than the first gen Mac Pro towers, same 96k session in Pro Tools running 95% RTAS load, runs right at 50% with the Mini...that's insane!).
So if you have a Mini and have been trying to find a solution to mounting it, or have been thinking on getting a Mini... This is hands down the solution for you! You won't regret it... I know I don't!
I've been waiting to pick this up for quite some time now! I use this as an efficient way to run backtracks live, and as a more portable recording solution.
Upon unboxing, Sonnet Tech provides you with simple setup instructions. You will be amazed how perfectly your Mac fits in the rack. I swear, it must have been engineered by a genius!
Besides the breezy setup, you're provided with a power button, and two USB ports right in the front, making things much easier in tight spaces!
The only feature I'm not too fond of is the fact that the rack itself is quite shallow. It can be difficult accessing additional USB/SD ports etc. in the back of your Mac.
I was about to drop $1500 on a MacBook when I already have a loaded Mac Mini, but thankfully, I found this! Easily pair your Mac and Sonnet RackMac with a Gator Rack Bag, and an AOC USB monitor for optimum portability and value!
