A Revolutionary Ribbon You'll Love to Record with!

As you might imagine, there are a lot of professional audio engineers here at Sweetwater. We all have our favorite gear, from the mics and preamps we love to the DAWs and monitors we swear by. When it comes to ribbon microphones, few engineers are mild-weathered about the subject. Some of us love their transparent performance and incredible detail, whereas others complain about their subdued high-frequency response. Here's the mic that's going to end the debate once and for all! Designed and built by Rupert Neve and sE Electronics, the RNR1 active ribbon microphone is a total game-changer!

Sure the RNR1 has all of the great characteristics that ribbon mic lovers expect: impeccable detail, impressive sensitivity, and heroic SPL handling, but that's not all. As opposed to most ribbons, which suffer performance drops at around 7-10kHz, the RNR1 actually gains a mild presence boost in the upper mid range. The result is an amazing-sounding ribbon microphone with a nearly ruler flat frequency response that sounds perfectly natural. With an RNR1 in your collection, you'll be able to capture everything from instruments to vocals more realistically than ever before!

Lush and wonderful

The RNR1 is a fascinating beast. It looks curious, it weighs a lot and it sounds gorgeous. It has a thick and lush sound - warm and in your face. I use it regularly on acoustic guitars for that rich, somewhat 'Americana' sound. For female singers who have higher toned or harsher voices, this mic is a godsend... it gives them both air and warmth while taking away any harshness or high-mid annoyances. Or stick it in front of a drum kit and it sounds like you are there in the room. And, of course, using it on an electric guitar cabinet will complement a 57 wonderfully.

The Most Natural Sounding Mic

I have used this mic on acoustic guitar, flute and vocals. This is so different to condenser mics. Lovely full bodied sound and "smooth" especially in the mids and low mids. There is enough highs for male vocals to shine in the mix. On Acoustic guitar is absolutely "God Send". My producer and I have never heard guitar sound so warm and beautiful. I am still experimenting with it on different instruments but it is now my first "go to" mic.

Sweetwater Advice

Carson McClain

If natural sound is what you want, then natural sound is what you will get out of this Neve-designed ribbon mic. Never before has a ribbon mic like this allowed an engineer or musician to capture the lows and highs at the same time. Vocalists, guitarists, and orchestral musicans will absolutley love the sE Electronics RNR1!

Thomas Leahy

I recently used the Rupert Neve RNR1 on acoustics and vocals at my studio and was stunned by the results. After finding the correct mic placement for the guitar, I turned the highpass filter on and my job was essentially done. I did not have to EQ frequencies out or account for the bass bump that most ribbons have - it sat perfectly in the mix as is. A pair of these for rooms or overheads yeilds transparent, yet musical sounding recordings. I'm a ribbon conosour, and this is now on the top of my list for go-to microphones.
