Gretsch Drums Renown RN2-E604 4-piece Shell Pack - Silver Oyster Pearl Reviews
The Gretsch Renown Series shell pack delivers a tone and playing experience that will have you going back to it for every musical genre and style. Their sound covers the warm tones of the 1950s as easily as it punches with the authority of 1980s rock. Much of the shells' versatility comes from their 7-ply maple construction and 30-degree bearing edge. And Gretsch upgraded the Renown Series with their 302 hoops, which exude the same character as die-cast hoops, but with added resonance thanks to their lighter weight.

Better than expected!!!
Classic Gretsch look, sound and quality. 302 hoops, silver sealer, and the gorgeous SOP wrap is eye candy! Great heads out of the box, with easy tuning. Project nicely as you’d expect from the maple shells with 30deg bearing edges. I did swap out the factory kick reso to a Remo PS3 fyberskin with a port. Kick is very warm and punchy. When I unpackaged my kit, I found that the factory had put the wrong 7x10 Tom in the kit. I emailed Scott A. at Sweetwater and he resolved the problem quickly and painlessly. By the next day I was ready to go. Thanks to Scott and everyone at Sweetwater for setting the bar high on sales and customer service!
Pros:
Pro quality kit from start to finish
Easy on the eyes
Great to the ears
Very well made
Hoops/Hardware is great
Cons:
Wrap on kick drum should have 1 seam on the center bottom of kick, instead of 2 seams at 5 & 7 o clock.
Not a fan of the Remo PS3 kick batter, but definitely not too bad.
These sound amazing!
I've always been interested in playing the drums. I have a Roland TD-17KVX - traded a couple of my electric guitars for it. I wanted to learn the drums for real and decided I needed an acoustic kit. I bought a cheap bop kit 10/13/18 with a 13" snare. I played it for about 6 months. I've played guitar since the 80's and know about gear and wasting money on mediocre stuff. When I first started playing the drums I got a cheap kit because I wasn't sure if I was going to love it. I played my cheap kit with some very nice Zildjian A cymbals and decent 600 series Yamaha hardware.
I really love playing the drums so I started looking for a nice set. I was looking at drums that were in the $600 price range and after some research figured they weren't a big jump from the kit I had already. I didn't want to buy a kit and then feel like I needed to buy another down the line. So really, I was looking for a kit I would want to keep forever. I looked at a bunch of kits and wanted the Brooklyns, but after some research settled on the Renown 10/12/14/20 as an affordable, quality, that would give me that Gretsch sound. Of course at this point I had no idea what that was :-).
I chose the 10/12/14/20 kit because I'm 5'2" and thought it would be easier to play than the kits with 22" and 24" bass drums. I did a bunch of research beforehand on should I get a 22" or 20" bass drum and I found lot of info on how to make smaller bass drums sound big. I was a little nervous at the price, but like I said, I wanted a kit I would keep forever.
When my new drums arrived I was astounded at how easy they were to tune. Once I played them, I swear I almost cried, they sounded so good. OMG these sound incredible. They made me want to play even more. I have had them for several months now and I still love them! I still have the factory heads on all of the drums. I use my Gretsch 14x6.5 USA Bronze snare with it. I've played it with two up - one down and one up - one down. Very comfortable kit to play. I use an Evans riser to raise the kick drum and it does seem to have more power off the floor. I do think about the 22" bass drum or a 13/16/24 kit, but those thoughts are fleeting. My kit is perfect! I have to say though, if you plan to add on drums it is an extreme expensive considering the cost of the kit.
The hardware is solid, especially in comparison to my cheap kit. The bearing edges were all good. The heads are good. The silver oyster pearl wraps looks great and I saw videos of this wrap under stage lighting, just beautiful! I couldn't be happier.
Couldn't Ask for More
Bought this kit (with matching snare) for my son as he grows in his percussion acuity. It has an awesome sound, is very sturdy in its build, and the adjustability is something we desired. Finally, not sure if it's a gimmick or not, but the silver sealer on the inside of the drums seems to give this kit a unique sound.
Very happy with this purchase.
