Yamaha RC2F50J Recording Custom 5-piece Shell Pack - Classic Walnut Reviews
Yamaha's Recording Custom drum series is for the recording or performing drummer who demands premium construction and tone. These drums were re-engineered in collaboration with Steve Gadd, an iconic session musician with credits such as B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and many more. The Recording Custom's 6-ply birch construction offers an open sound with great definition. And the hardware is all top quality, designed to offer tone enhancement, stability, and ease of use. Yamaha and Gadd worked together on the Recording Customs to make you some of the ultimate drums for recording and gigging.

Great sounding kit.
So to start, I don't have this exact configuration. I have the 5 pc with the 20x16 kick. The 20" kick has a build in riser in the batter hoop. This makes a difference but I also wonder if it's not a weak point in the hoop its self. I also purchased the 22x14 separately, very expensive and sounds killer. I assume the 22x18 is going to be like most the others but I've found through the years the shallower depth actually gives a better and more recording friendly sound.
All that being said, these drums sound amazing and record very well. They also have a feel under the hands that just feels good to play. They really give back especially as compared to my Pearl Masters kit with die cast hoops which can seem almost more of a chore to play when compared to these. There's another review that brings up the Made In China thing. I know the feeling but these really are top of the line.
My gripe is they don't have memory locks. A kit at this price point should come standard with that. Also, which seems to be the standard for all Yamaha's drums, lack luster finish selection. You telling me I'm going to drop 5k on a kit and no sparkle lacquer or something. If you take this thing on stage you'll sound good but basically no pop! That's half of show, looking good!!
I've had these since 2017, recorded with them in different configurations 4 times, gigged 2 times, had them set up as a set to play at home for a few years. I really only bring them out to record now.
If you're thinking about buying these, get a cheaper kit to drag around to gigs and save this for the studio. Bob at SW helped me with this purchase.
Best of the best
I have several sets and just when I thought sets could not get any better I bought this one at SW. Fit, finish , quality second to none.
Awesome sound
I have a 5 piece recording custom in walnut and it is a beautiful looking and sounding kit! It is the best sounding kit I have ever heard or owned and I have owned many kits. It is well worth the money. I wasn't concerned with it being made in China because everything Yamaha makes is excellent quality!
